  • In his paper "Structural Equations Approach to Token Causation: The Active Route Account Revisited" Professor Sungsu Kim defends the active route account. The active route account is the theory of causation which overcomes counterexamples to the counterfactual theories of causation, while maintaining the counterfactual theorist's essential intuition that an effect depends counterfactually on a cause. Unfortunately, there are counterexamples to the active route account itself. Professor Sungsu Kim attempts to defend the active route account by rebutting those counterexamples. In this paper, I argue that his defense of the active route account is not successful.

  • In this paper, I raise objections to Sungsu Kim's argument that Sartorio's hard-line reply to the manipulation argument fails. In attacking Sartorio's argument, Sungsu Kim claims that there are two problems with Sartorio's. I argue that Sungsu Kim's argument fails by responding to these two problems. With respect to the first problem, I provide a new example of dilution of responsibility. With respect to the second problem, I argue that, contrary to what Sungsu Kim assumes, for Sartorio's argument to succeed, our intuition that Ernie is responsible in the Lightning Strike Scenario does not have to be as strong as our intuition that Ernie is not responsible in the Diana scenario.

  • This study aims at reporting a systematic procedure for evaluating the static and dynamic structural performance of steel bridges based on a short-period structural health monitoring measurement. Sungsu bridge located in Korea is considered as a case study presenting the most recent tests carried out to examine the bridge condition. Short-period measurements of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) system were used during the bridge testing phase. A novel symmetry index is introduced using statistical analyses of deflection and strain measurements. Frequency Domain Decomposition (FDD) is implemented to the strain measurements to estimate the bridge mode shapes and damping ratios. Furthermore, Markov Chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) is also implemented to examine the reliability of bridge performance while ambient design trucks are in static or moving at different speeds. Strain, displacement and acceleration were measured at selected locations on the bridge. The results show that the symmetry index can be an efficient and useful measure in assessing the steel bridge performance. The results from the used method reveal that the performance of the Sungsu bridge is safe under operational conditions.

  • The idea that an effect counterfactually depends on its cause is simple and intuitive. However, this simple idea runs into various difficulties. The active route account, in order to avoid the difficulties, analyzes causation in terms of counterfactual dependence under certain control. In her recent article, Seahwa Kim criticizes Sungsu Kim's earlier attempt to defend the active route account from its counterexamples. Her criticisms are convincing, and defenders of the active route account or counterfactual analysis of causation in general need another defense. In response, a two-step defense is proposed. First, the scope of the active route account is restricted to 'proximate' causal relation. Second, a control over factors that are in proximate causal relation is offered to figure out 'distant' causal relation. The result is that with proper control, an effect indeed counterfactually depends on its cause.

  • In this paper, we propose regression methods based on the likelihood function. We assume Arnold-Beaver Skew Normal(ABSN) errors in a simple linear regression model. It was shown that the novel method performs better with an asymmetric data set compared to the usual regression model with the Gaussian errors. The utility of a novel method is demonstrated through simulation and real data sets.

  • This paper presents the result of numerical simulation of particles trace following melted zinc movement with nitrogen gas injection. The code of the computational fluid dynamics for numerical analysis was performed using FLUENT related to CFD. As application model, there was applied Eulerian multiphase model for simulation of melted zinc movement at first and then was used stochastic tracking technique for particles trace secondarily. Numerical simulation results are shown that particles move to the same direction as the movement of melted zinc.

  • Regarding efficient development of computer graphic animations, lots of techniques for editing or transforming existing motion data have been developed. Basically, the motion transformation techniques follow optimization process. To make the animation be natural, almost all the techniques utilize kinematics and dynamics in constructing constraints for the optimization. Since the kinematic and dynamic structures of virtual characters to be animated are very complex, the most time-consuming part is known to the optimization process. In order to suggest some guide lines to engineers involved in the motion transformation, in this paper, we analyze the computational complexities for typical motion transformation in quantitative manner as well as the possibility for parallel computation.

  • This study proposes a development for the nano silver adhesive, which is applicable to high efficiency LED(light-emitting diode) light. The important issue of LED light is heat exhaust from LED. Generally, the middle area of LED light is increased up to 380K. Therefore, the bottleneck between LED chip and heat sink are caused by high temperature. In this work, the adhesive material between LED Chip and heat sink was newly developed for improvement of bottleneck. The nano silver was adopted to solve heat problem of chip on board package for LED light. In order to evaluate the performance of the nano silver adhesive, the thermal analysis was performed. Moreover both adhesive performance and heat exhaust were verified through the prototype test. From the experimental test results, it is found that the developed nano silver adhesive has the high performance.
