  • The paper proposed a sizing method of an energy storage system(ESS) for peak shaving of high-speed railway substations based on load profile patterns of substations. A lithium based battery ESS was selected since it can produce high-power at high speed that peak shaving requires, and also takes up a relatively smaller space for installation. Adequate size of the ESS, minimum capacity which can technically meet a peak shaving target, was determined by collectively considering load patterns of a target substation, characteristics of the ESS to be installed, and optimal scheduling of the ESS. In case study, a local substation was considered to demonstrate the proposed sizing method. Also economic analysis with the determined size of ESS was performed to calculate electricity cost savings of the peak shaving ESS, and to offer pay-back period and return on investment.

  • Currently, the new substation automation uses the international standard IEC 61850 communication protocol. KEPCO is also constructing a new substation based on IEC 61850 from 2013 through the pilot application and research and development starting from 2007. However, there are few cases where existing substations(Transformer, T/L GIS, D/L GIS, etc.) have been used, and RTU based substations operating systems have been changed to SA substations based on IEC 61850. Therefore, the introduction of IEC 61850 in existing substation facilities has the advantage of enhancing the substantiality of the substation by reusing existing facilities, improving the interoperability with the latest substations introduced, and converting existing substations into systems suitable for unmanned operation. In this paper, we introduce a case of changing the existing RTU based substation operation system to digital substation using IEC 61850 field information processor, Ethernet switch and SA operation system. Also, IEC 61850 client authentication program and Wireshark, which is a packet analysis tool, verify IEC 61850 conformance and its feasibility.

  • Most of the substations, which had been constructed so far, only took into account the current distortion as an evaluation factor for harmonics. There is, however, growing tendency for the currently constructed substations to construct transmission lines in an underground way. Therefore, the overhaul investigation on the psophometric current is all the more necessary. In this study, the harmonic current, the current distortion and the psophometric current, which flow into the substation in accordance with a feeding system and the number of trains in operation are investigated and compared based on the six-port analysis method of feeding system, which has been proposed.

  • The mathematical model of the power substation is proposed. The substation esteems as a set of the equipment elements which integrated common connections and electromagnetic field. Some capabilities of model represented by both electric networks and a discrete logical model demonstrated by non-directional graph. The model can be useful for solution of the problem of diagnostic of the high-voltage equipment.

  • Energized power transformers in substations make unwelcome noises which propagate to nearby residential areas. As the excessive noise level become a target of public grievance than ever, utilities are seeking solutions to it. This paper introduce a power transformer noise prediction program which can give utilities effective solutions. Once a noise source is given, the program calculates the propagated noise level at certain points. The estimated result is rendered as noise contour map. To validate the accuracy of the program, the predicted noises are compared to measured one in real substations and proven to be acceptable within a margin of 5 percent.

  • The transient fields generated during switching operations in a Gas Insulated Substation (GIS) are associated with high frequency components in the order of few tens of MHz. These transient fields leak into the external environment of the gas-insulated equipment and can interfere with the nearby electronics. Measurements of the transient fields are thus required to characterise the interference caused by switching phenomena in such substations. In view of the above, E-field emission measurement during a switching operation has been carried out for a 245 kV GIS model, using a resonant dipole antenna and D-dot sensor. The characteristics of the E-fields i.e., frequency spectra and their levels have been analysed and are reported in the paper. Suitability of the measurements has been confirmed by comparing frequency spectra of the measured and computed transient fields.

  • For a more efficient and economical management of substations of power system areas, the concept of substation automation has been introduced using intelligent and ubiquitous IT techniques. In this paper, ubiquitous IT prototype hardware, functions and communication interfaces on an embedded platform for substation automation are proposed. Also, operating system architecture is suggested for the effective implementation of substation automation.

  • This paper suggests a long-term distribution area load forecasting algorithm which offers basic data for distribution planning of power system. To build forecasting model, 4-level hierarchical spatial structure is introduced: System, Region, Area, and Substation. And, each spatial load can be decided proportional to its portion in the higher level. This paper introduces the horizon year loads to improve the forecasting results. And, this paper also introduces an effective load transfer algorithm to improve forecasting stability in case of new or stopped substations. The proposed model is applied to the load forecasting of KEPCO system composed of 16 regions, 85 areas and 761 substations, and the results are compared with those of econometrics model to verify its validity.

  • The KEPCO is developing the load forecasting system using land-use simulation method and distribution planning system. A distribution planning needs the data of present loads, forecasted loads and substations. distribution lines information. By the distribution planning system, the distribution line designer determines the substations and feeder lines plan. This paper presents the method of formulation process for the long term load forecasting and optimal distribution planning, and describes the case study of long term distribution planning of Suwon-city according to the newly applied method.

  • A high peak power demand at substations will result under Moving Block Signalling (MBS) when a dense queue of trains begins to start from a complete stop at the same time in an electrified railway system. This may cause the power supply interruption and in turn affect the train service substantially. In a recent study, measures of Starting Time Delay (STD) and Acceleration Rate Limit (ARL) are the possible approaches to reduce the peak power demand on the supply system under MBS. Nevertheless, there is no well-defined relationship between the two measures and peak power demand reduction (PDR). In order to attain a lower peak demand at substations on different traffic conditions and system requirements, an expert system is one of the possible approaches to procure the appropriate use of peak demand reduction measures ...
