  • With the advent of the international standard IEC 61850 for communication networks and systems in substations, utilities are beginning to implement substation automation systems (SAS) that can give support to interoperability, interchangeability and self-description features. This paper describes with the SAS design accordance with this new standard. After a brief introduction of IEC 61850 SCL, this paper addresses some issues related to the specification of an IEC 61850 based SAS, and describes the Substation Configuration Language (SCL) based on Extensible Markup Language (XML). The SAS design process is explored with examples including the Intelligent Electronic Device (IED) selection, Logical Nodes (LN) allocation and the related services and the SAS communication architecture.

  • This paper describes a real time digital simulation method for the application of HTS tape to power devices. At present, in order to extend the power capacity of some area which has a serious problem of power quality, especially metropolitan complex city. there are so many problems such as ROW for cable line routes, space for downtown substations, and the environmental protection, etc. HTS technology is one of the best solutions. Simulation is required for safety before install of HTS power cable, a fabrication model used at the power system simulation. Here, in this paper, authors developed an algorithm connected with HTS by using Real-Time Digital Simulator(RTDS).

  • Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) is in charge of the operation and the maintenance for transmission lines and substations in Korean power system which is under the deregulation power market. KEPCO has a main constrain of transmission line toward SEOUL area which is a capital of KOREA because SEOIJL is a huge load of Korean power system. The Korea Electric Power Research Institute (KEPRI)), a division of KEPCO was tasked to study the ATC enhancement of transmission line toward SEOUL using a new line or/and FACTS. This paper summarizes the results of those studies, enhancing the ATC and evaluating the economics.

  • This paper represents the criteria of Power Transformers for substation design in Korea. The construction of new substations and expansion of existing facilities are commonplace projects in KEPCO(Korea Electric Power Corporation). The KEPCO has had the only design criteria, which need to be adequate criteria considering the new technology and environment in Korea.

  • Mathematical model of the pollution rate of substation insulators is constructed, taking the model parameters as wind speed, wind direction, typhoon conditions and rainfall in an hourly basis. The main feature of model construction is to distinguish the effect of each parameter by separately analyzing the positive and negative pollution causing factors. Model parameters for the insulators of Karatsu substation, Saga, Japan were estimated and model validation was done using the actual data, in which the pollution deposits on the insulators were measured using pilot insulator and 'salt meter'. The proposed model of the pollution rate [mg/cm$^{2}$/hr] enables the identification of the effective parameters and prediction of the pollution rate so that it helps for the automatic decision making for insulator cleaning or the model can be used as a tool for the substation engineers to make precautionary measures.

  • We have performed an EMTDC simulation for the current limiting effects of a superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). The fault currents in the 154 kV transmission line between the Gaepo and Sungnam substations increased up to 54kA and 60kA during the line-to-line and three phase faults, respectively. The SFCL with 100 $\Omega$ of impedance after quench limited the currents to less than 17 kA within a half cycle. This limited current is well below the upper limit of a circuit breaker, suggesting that the impedance of the SFCL in the transmission line is sufficient.

  • This paper deals with the harmonic reduction technique in square-wave inverters which can regenerate the dc power from dc bus line to ac bus line in substations for traction systems. To reduce the harmonics, two 6-pulse inverters are used for 12-pulse operation and zigzag-connected output transformers for eliminating the harmonics of 6(2m-1)$\pm$1 orders. And an ac filter is furnished at output side. In spite of the square-wave three-phase inverters, computer simulations show that the THDs of the output voltage and current are 2.55% and 0.554%, respectively.

  • The transmission system is designed to be protected by 40 kA rate of circuit breaker fer 345 tV system and 31.5 kA and 50 kA rate of circuit breaker for 154 kV system. The short circuit current shows the tendency of exceeding circuit breaker duty for some substations and the tendency will continue if an appropriate countermeasure will not be applied to. In order to solve this problem from the viewpoint of system operation, the 154 kV system is under reconfiguration to be radial systems. This paper presents application effect of resistive and inductive SCFL (Superconducting Fault Current Limiter to Korea power systems. An algorithm of SCFL site decision is suggested.
