In this paper we present a cognitive developmental analysis of the arithmetic mean concept. This analysis leads us to a hierarchical classification at different levels of understanding of the responses of 227 students to a questionnaire which combines open-ended and multiple-choice questions. The SOLO theoretical framework is used for this analysis and we find five levels of students' responses. These responses confirm different types of difficulties encountered by students regarding their conceptualization of the arithmetic mean. Also we have observed that there are no significant differences between secondary school and university students' responses.

This study investigated university students' (majoring physics education) understanding of some aspects of idealization frequently used in teaching and learning of physics, especially of mechanics. A total of 143 students were given a Questionnaire of six questions requiring written responses. Out of the six questions, the first three were concerned with basic idealized concepts, the next two with the making of the assumptions of ideal conditions for given problem settings, and the last with the identification of the idealization used in the given solution of a problem. Students' written responses were grouped into patterns and the relative frequencies of the patterns were counted. It was found that the students had limited understanding of the idealization and their ideas were diverse and frequently incorrect. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to the roles of idealization in physics education.
Experiential education is a core curriculum of pharmacy education. In experiential education, formative feedback is an integral component of learning and teaching process. Feedback is defined as information provided by a preceptor regarding student's performance based on direct observation. With effective feedback, students can have opportunities to reinforce or correct behaviors and to acquire knowledge or skills. Students highly value and appreciate feedback. They rank provision of effective feedback as one of the most important qualities of preceptors. Preceptors, however, lack an understanding of feedback or practical skills necessary for providing effective feedback. As a result in reality, the feedback provided to students can be differentially effective in improving students' learning. This article describes a theoretical understanding of feedback including definition and value, as well as types of feedback. In addition, practical aspects in providing feedback, such as contents, timing, techniques, and models, are addressed. By understanding the value of feedback and mastering various feedback skills, preceptors will promote students' learning and enhance educational outcomes of experiential education.
In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the analogies, the mapping understanding, and the mapping errors on saturated solution of scientifically-gifted and general elementary students. Fifth graders (n=60) at four scientifically-gifted education institutes in Seoul and/or Gyeonggi province and fifth graders (n=91) at three elementary schools in Seoul were selected and assigned to the scientifically-gifted group and the general group respectively. After the students of each group performed the experiment and were taught about the target concept in the first class, they administered the test on the self-generating analogies on the target concept in the second class. The results revealed that the students in the scientifically-gifted group made more analogies, especially verbal/pictorial, structural/functional, enriched, and higher systematic ones, and had deeper understanding of the analogy than those in the general group. The numbers of the shared attributes included in the student-generated analogies and the scores of the mapping understanding of the students in the scientifically-gifted group were significantly higher than those in the general group. The students in the scientifically-gifted group had fewer mapping errors than those in the general group. However, not a few students in the scientifically-gifted group had at least one mapping error. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.
This paper aims to find out how did elementary students understand scientific units in science textbooks. The subjects were 191 students of the 6th grade from 7 elementary schools in 3 different areas, consisting of 70 from 4 village schools of, 64 from 2 town schools of Gyeongnam province, and 57 from one city school in Ulsan Metro City. A test was developed based on the analysis of scientific units in the science textbooks and teacher's manuals constructed according to the 6th and 7th National Science Curriculum. The understanding of elementary students' on the scientific units(Temperature, Length, Weight, Volume, Speed, Plane Angle) were surveyed. The result are as follows: Regarding the temperature unit, the students generally well understand why to measure and how to read temperature, but had some problem in recording it, in confusion with the plane angle sign. As for the length unit, they obtained high scores in understanding the purpose of measuring length as well as recording and reading it. Which indicates that they are well aware of and use the unit appropriately. With respect to the weight unit, they got high scores in reading and recording weight, which means most students have no problem using the unit. However, it was found that they do not understand why to use the plate balance scale. The volume unit was one in which the students got relatively lower scores. They do not perceive the object of using a scale cylinder and confuse it with a device of length measurement. The unit of speed is the most difficult one for children's of science to understand, presumably, because it is an derived unit from two basic units. It is also assumed that the students got the highest score in the plane angle unit because they studied the unit immediately before the test. From the children's understanding of science units above the teacher's understanding and teaching methods presumed to play a major role for children to understand and use the science units properly.
Urban planning and engineering undergraduate students need to understand the earth physical systems and that how human beings interact with the earth systems to planning and engineering urban area. The eco-friendly or geo-friendly design and planning of an urban area is a critical issue not only for economic benefits but more importantly for the sustainable future of urban life. However, little study has been done dealing with the urban engineering students' understanding of the earth as a system and what pedagogical approach is appropriate to improve their understanding of the earth as a system. This study is to investigate the impact of a purposely designed ESS course on urban engineering students' understanding of the earth as a system and their perceptions about the instructional approaches of the course on their learning competency. This study utilized a mixed-methodology with three main data sources: concept maps, student's perception survey about their learning competency, and course contents. Both the survey and concept maps were analyzed quantitatively as well as qualitatively. The result of this study showed that the urban engineering students' experience of team-based research about the topic they chose based on their own interest had a positive impact on their understanding of the earth as a system and their learning competency. The results of this study suggest that structuring and presenting the earth system contents in the context of engineering students' understanding and their future career be effective not only for the improvement of students' content knowledge but also for the enhancement of their learning competency such as creativity and problem-solving skills in everyday life situation.
As a way of improving social receptivity of using radiation, this study looked into the difference of understanding the need of using radiation in various fields between students majoring in radiation and non-radiation related studies, who will influence public opinion in the long term. This study also provides data needed for developing efficient strategies for projects promoting the public's awareness of using radiation. Of the students in the 79 schools sampled, 24%(177) were in 4 year colleges and 146 were junior colleges in educational statistics service (http://cesi.kedi.re.kr) In November 2010 1,945 students were selected as a sample, and they were given surveys on the need of using radiation in different fields. As a result, both between students majoring in radiation and non-radiation related studies showed a high level of understanding the need for radiation in the medical field and showed a low level of understanding of the need for radiation in the agricultural field. In all 6 fields of radiation use, students majoring in radiation related studies showed higher levels of understanding for the need to use radiation than students majoring in radiation and non-radiation related studies. In each field, male students and those who have experience medical radiation and relevant education had higher level of understanding. This shows we need to improve the understanding of the cases of female students and those who have not had experiences with medical radiation and to provide relevant education through various kinds of information. The characteristics of the groups that are shown in the results of this study are considered to be helpful for efficiently for project promoting the public's awareness of using radiation.

Despite the importance of pattern learning for elementary school students, few studies have investigated in detail the understanding of patterns of lower-grade students. This study aimed to analyze the understanding of patterns of second-grade elementary school students. Since the patterns in the second grade are taught through the unit called Finding Rules, students' understanding of patterns was compared and contrasted before and after they learned the unit. To this end, a written instrument to measure students' understanding of patterns was developed on the basis of previous studies on pattern learning for lower-grade students. A total of 189 students were analyzed. As a result of the study, the overall correct answer rates in the post-test were higher in most items than those in the pre-test, illustrating the positive effect of the specific unit. However, students found it difficult to find rules in which two components would change simultaneously either in geometric or numeric patterns, find patterns that would be similar in structure, represent geometric patterns into numeric patterns, find empty terms in increasing patterns, and reason the specific terms in patterns that can be differently interpreted. Based on these research results, this study sheds light on students' understanding of patterns and suggests implications to improve their understanding.
The arithmetic operation have double-sided character. One is calculation as a process, the other is understanding in results as an outcome of the operation. We harbored suspicion on students' misunderstanding in an outcome of the operation, because the curriculum has focused on the calculation, as a process of arithmetic operation. This study starts with the presentation of this problem, we tried to find the recognition ability and character in the arithmetic operation. We researched the recognition ability for 7th grade 27 students who have enough experience in arithmetic operation when studying in elementary school. And we had an interview with 3students individually, that has an error in understanding in results of arithmetic operation but has no error in calculation. We focused on 3students' detailed appearance of the ability to understand in results of arithmetic operation and analysed the changing appearance after recommending unit record using operation expression. As a result, we could find the abily to underatanding in results of arithmetic operation and applicability to recommend unit record using operation expression. Through these results, we suggested educational implications in understanding in results of arithmetic operation.
The importance of students' precise understanding of mathematical definitions, formulas, and theorems can not be underestimated. In this survey research, we attempted to evaluate students' understanding of the concepts of five topics -limit, continuity and intermediate theorem, derivative, application of derivative and integral. On the basis of the research result, this paper suggests that we need to 1) be more inventive and speculative in making test problems, 2) explain the examples and counter-examples more concretely, 3) stress and repeat the basic concepts on the stage of introducing new concepts, 4) develop more effective problems for the measure of students' understanding of mathematical concepts, 5) use developed problems in actual teaching.
