  • Ultrasonic machining technology has been developed over recent years for the manufacture of and quality-assured precision parts for several industrial application such as optics, semiconductors, aerospace, and automobile application. The past decade has seen a tremendous in the use of ceramics in structural application. The excellent thermal, chemical and wear resistance of these material can be realized because of recent improvements in the overall strength and uniformity of advanced ceramics. Ultrasonic machining, in which abrasive particles in slurry with water are presented to the work surface in the presence of an ultrasonic-vibrating tool, is process which should be of considerable interest, as its potential is not limited by the electrical or chemical characteristics of the work material, making it suitable for application to ceramics. This paper intends to further the understanding of the basic mechanism of ultrasonic machining for brittle material and ultrasonic machining of ceramics based in the fracture-mechanic concept has been analyzed.

  • In case eccentric load is applied at compact tension specimen, the propagation behavior due to existence or nonexistence of hole, numbers and positions of holes near crack is investigated in this study. Strain energy, displacement and stress happened in specimen are examined through simulation analysis. And stress intensity factor is obtained by the basis of strain energy and deformation. When defect or hole exists in structure, the possibility of fracture can be thought to be verified by using the study result.

  • Most manufacturing processes such as welding, cutting and molding generate residual stresses on the surface of manufactured parts. Between compressive and tensile residual stresses, the tensile residual stress is harmful to the surface integrity, which results in reduced fatigue life and causes other structural failures when the service stresses are superimposed on the residual stresses. In the research, the residual stresses in the hardened tool steel (SKD11) were measured using hole-drilling method. The specimens were prepared through hard turning. Most of residual stresses in the machined surface were compressive.

  • Drilling is one of the most important operations performed in the machining industry. And the material of the workpiece has a profound effect on the tool life, the surface finish produced and the overall economy of the process. Hot-rolled high strength steels have been used for automobile structural material, owing to high hardness and machinability of the material. However, in the drilling of hot-rolled high strength steels, the current knowledge of tool wear and machinability are insuf-ficient. There, it is desirable to monitor drill wear status and hole quality changes during the hole drilling process. Accordingly, this paper deals with the cutting characteristics of the hot-rolled high strength steels using common HSS drill. The performance variables include the drilling thrust, torque and drill wear data obtained from drilling experiments con-ducted on the workpiece. Also drill were is measured by acoustic emission system and computer vision system.

  • Metal/poly (4,4'-aminotriphen-ylene hexafluoroisopropylidenediphthalimide) (TP6F PI)/metal structure exhibited an electrically volatile phase transition with high (OFF) or low (ON) resistive states when voltage between electrodes swept. Here, we demonstrate a noble set-up in which holes are injected by photoelectron emission process during the voltage sweep instead of direct charge carrier injection via metal electrode, which enables direct investigation into changed electronic structures of TP6F PI both in ON and OFF states using photoemission spectroscopy methods. In the I-V measurement, TP6F PI shows a non-volatile behavior. In spectroscopic results, this non-volatile behavior is leaded from the structural modification of the O=C double bond in phthalimide of TP6F PI by hole injection.

  • This study was based on organic electroluminescence display. Especially, TPD and $\alpha-NPD$ for the hole transport materials were synthesized by Ullmann reaction. This reaction was conducted between 3methylphenylamine, 1-naphthylamine and 4,4'-diiodobiphenyl in toluene containing CuCl catalyst and KOH base. The structural property of reaction products were analyzed by FT-IR, $^1H-NMR$ spectroscopy, and thermal stability, reactivity and PL property were analyzed by melting point, yield and emission spectrum, respectively. The photoluminescence spectra of a pure TPD and $\alpha-NPD$ were observed at approximately 416nm and 438nm respectively. In this study, it was known that the melting point, yield, PL properties of TPD and $\alpha-NPD$ were changed by substituent group of amines.

  • We propose a photonic crystal fiber (PCF) with a slotted porous core and elliptical-hole cladding, for high birefringence in the terahertz regime. Asymmetry in the guided mode is obtained mainly by using arrays of elliptical air holes in the TOPAS® polymer cladding. We investigate the tradeoff between several structural parameters and find optimized values that can have a high birefringence while satisfying the single-mode condition. The optical properties in the terahertz regime are thoroughly analyzed in numerical simulations, using a full-vector finite-element method with the perfectly-matched-layer condition. In an optimal design, the proposed photonic crystal fiber shows a high birefringence of 8.80 × 10-2 and an effective material loss of 0.07 cm-1 at a frequency of 1 THz, satisfying the single-mode-guidance condition at the same time. The proposed PCF would be useful for various polarization-management applications in the terahertz range.

  • The dynamic load caused by sloshing of internal fluid severely affects the structural and control stabilities of cylindrical liquid containers accelerating vertically. If the sloshing frequency of fluid is near the frequency of control system or the tank structure, large dynamic force and moment act on launching vehicles. For the suppression of such dynamic effects, generally flexible ring-type baffles are employed. In this paper, we perform the numerical analysis to evaluate the dynamic suppression effects of baffle. The parametric analysis is performed with respect to the baffle inner-hole diameter and two different baffle spacing types : equal spacing with respect to the tank and one with respect to the fluid height. The ALE (arbitrary Lagrangin-Eulerian) numerical method is adopted for the accurate and effective simulation of the hydrodynamic interaction between fluid and elastic structure.

  • This study is dealt with the experimental seam strength of deep corrugated steel plate which is used as underpasses, storm sewers and other buried applications. The soil-metal structure using deep corrugated plate should be sufficient to ensure safety for compressive loading. The experimental and theoretical results on the seam strength are accumulated enough to take the design guideline, even if the seam strength at the bolt connected lap joint in construction site can be varied depending on the connection detailing and the thickness of plate. In this study, compressive behavior of bolted lap jointed plates using various connection detail such as gasket, slot hole, washer was experimentally analyzed. From the test, failure pattern with an increases in the thickness of specimens was changed from plate bearing to bolt shearing. In case of thicker plates than 6.0mm, the structural performance of lap joint using gasket and slot hole is more effective than it of the plate adopted washer.

  • The strengthening in terms of efficiency, easy, economics is very popular method when it is applied to a damaged structures. The purpose of this study develops anchorage system that supports enough strengthening effect without any damage. In addition it is checked whether the method can be conveniently applied to structures. To verify strengthening effect a flexural experiments were performed. Four concrete beams were constructed and tested. Deflections, strains and modes of failure were recorded to examine strengthen of beams. Comparing crack load of each experimental data, yielding load, ultimate load, ductility index, and tendon stress were analyzed.
