  • The main purpose of this study is to estimate the internal temperature of RC beam under fire. For this purpose, the finite difference method was used. In the previous studies, the structural behavior of fire damaged RC beams was investigated through experiments. The result was concluded that The high temperature affects the properties of concrete such as the elastic modulus, the compressive strength. The internal temperature Estimation of the concrete is helpful for understanding the structural behavior of fire damaged RC beams. Especially, high strength concrete has more spalling than normal strength one. So, this study is performed analysis of internal temperature of RC beam considering spalling.

  • Recently, the concern for mechanical properties at early age concrete are increasing because of the importance of the thermal stress and the determination of removal time of form work and prestressing work. In this study, an estimation for the development of compressive strength and elastic modulus with age in concretes isothermally cured $(10^{\circ}C,\;20^{\circ}C)$ and having W/C ratio of 30, 40, and $50\%$ were investigated. According to experiment results, the development of compressive strength and elastic modulus shows higher values at early ages as the W/C ratio decreases and curing temperature increases. When the maturity concept, for estimation of the strength, is adopted, a modification for W/C ratio is required at early ages.

  • Ultra high performance concrete (UHPC) is a relatively new cementitous material, which has been developed to give significantly higher material performance than conventional concrete or engineered cementitious composites. In this study, reverse analysis of notched UHPC beam was conducted according to the experimental result of load-displacement. Conclusively, tensile strength vs. CMOD (Crack Mouth Opening Displacement) was calculated as an approximated method for the direct tensile strength estimation.

  • A stress-strength model is formulated for a multi-component system consisting of k identical components. The k components of the system with random strengths ($X_1$, $X_2$, ${\ldots}$, $X_k$) are subjected to one of the r random stresses ($X_{k+1}$, $X_{k+2}$, ${\ldots}$, $X_{k+r}$). The estimation of system reliability based on maximum likelihood estimates (MLEs) and Bayes estimators in k component system are obtained when the system is either parallel or series with the assumption that strengths and stresses follow exponential distribution. A simulation study is conducted to compare MLE and Bayes estimator through the mean squared errors of the estimators.

  • This paper presents the results from a combination of strut-and-tie model and analytical study that investigated the ultimate strength of wall system with frame supports. Strut-and-tie models show reasonable force flows and upper bound solution is compared to the results from FEM analysis. The results shows that two main parameters - transfer girder depth and column width - yield good estimation of the ultimate strength of the system. Vertical and horizontal reinforcements of the transfer girder add few strength to the whole system. The proposed design strength formula shows good agreement with the results from FEM analysis.

  • This study performs a series of Triaxial Compression Test for clay-sand composite specimens changing area replacement ratio. Purpose of the test is to conform the propriety of weighted average method in estimating shear strength of the composite ground. The test results show that measured values of shear strength of composite specimens are larger by 20∼30% than those from estimation using the current weighted average method. It is thought that the differences are from pseudo-overconsolidation behavior of composite specimens.

  • We treat the problem of estimating reliability R(t) = P[Y(t) < X(t)] in the time dependent strength-stress model in which a unit of strength X(t) is subjected to environmental stress Y(t) at time t. In this paper two nonparametric approaches to estimate of R(t) are analyzed and compared with parametric method by simulation.

  • The estimation of strength parameters is very important for the stability analysis of rock slopes. Various methods for the determination of strength parameters were suggested by various researchers. The number of methods used for the estimation of strength parameters in the stability analysis of rock slopes were investigated based on literature reviews. The frequency of the method determining strength parameters were investigated with respect to failure types. The cohesion and friction angles of the rock and discontinuities are presented with RMR values. The cohesion shows wider range of values relative to those of friction angles according to current studies. Even though RMR does not show any correlation with cohesion values, RMR and the friction angle of the rock clearly shows a positive relationship. Proper methods should be utilized for the determination of strength parameters with consideration for failure types and be proved through literature reviews. The credibility of determining strength parameters is expected to improve if strength parameters data are accumulated from the back analysis performed for failed local rock slopes.

  • In this study, to propose simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island using uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength, the estimated values of cohesion and internal friction angle from triaxial and uniaxial compression tests and Brazilian tests were compared in terms of estimation accuracy. This study proposed simplified methods for estimating the cohesion and internal friction angle using the uniaxial compressive strength and/or Brazilian tensile strength of volcanic rocks in Jeju Island. According to the findings, among the proposed simplified methods, the method using uniaxil compressive strength was most desirable to accurately estimate the cohesion and internal friction angle of volcanic intact rocks in Jeju Island.

  • This study investigates the existing models for estimating the shear strength of rock joints, presents related problems, and introduces a newly proposed model to overcome the problems. The results of many experimental tests show that the shear strength of a rock joint depends on many complex factors, including asperity angle, compressive strength, applied normal stress, friction angle, asperity cohesive strength, and progressive damage of asperities. However, the existing models do not account for these factors enough. To overcome these problems, Son (2020) developed a new model to estimate the shear strength of rock joints and confirmed its reliability by comparing with experimental results and existing models. In this paper, the developed model was used to investigate the various factors that affect the joint shear strength, and the results were compared and analyzed. Through this study, the factors that affect the shear strength of the rock joint could be identified in more detail.
