The main goal of this study was to examine the shear behavior of reinforced concrete beams strengthened with CFRP strups. Seven rectangular beams were tested. The test variables were the configuration types, spacing length of CFRP strips and the amount of reinforced stirrups bars. From this experimental study, the shear capacity of beams strengthened with CFRP increased significantly compared to the beam without CFRP strip. Maximum increase of ultimate shear strength was found about 100% more than that of the beam without a CFRP strip and the CFRP strips attached in the shear region can resist the occurrence of the initial shear cracks and the propagation of major shear cracks. In this test, most of the shear strengthened beams failed suddenly due to the debonding of CFRP strips. A calculation of the shear strength of reinforced beams strengthened with CFRP strips based on the effective stresses was conducted and the comparisons were made with the test results.
This paper describes the bone healing process of fractured long bones such as a tibia applied by composite IM rods using finite element analysis. To simulated tissue differentiation process mechano-regulation theory with a deviatoric strain was implemented and a user's subroutine programmed by a Python code for an iterative calculation was used. To broadly find the appropriate rod modulus for healing bone fractures, composite IM rods were analyzed considering the stacking sequence. To compare mechanical stimulation at fracture gap, two kinds of initial loading conditions were applied. As a result, it was found that the initial loading condition was the most sensitive factor for the healing performance. In case a composite IM rod made of a plain weave carbon fiber/epoxy (WSN3k) had a stacking sequence of $[{\pm}45]_{nT}$, the healing efficiency was the most effective under a initial load of 10%BW.

The maritime sector is advancing with dedicated endeavor to reduce greenhouse gas in addressing issues with regards to global warming. Since 01 January 2013, the International Maritime Organization (IMO) regulation mandatory requirement for Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) has been in place and should be satisfied by newly-built ships of more than 400 gross tonnage and the Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP) for all ships type. Therefore, compliance to this necessitates planning during the design stage whereas verification can be carried-out through an acceptable method during sea trial. The MEPC-approved 2013 guidance, ISO 15016 and ISO 19019 on EEDI serves the purpose for calculation and verification of attained EEDI value. Individual ships EEDI value should be lower than the required value set by these regulations. The key factors for EEDI verification are power and speed assessment and their synchronization. The shaft power can be measured by telemeter system using strain gage during sea trial. However, calibration of shaft power onboard condition is complicated. Hence, it relies only on proficient technology that operates within the permitted ISO allowance. On the other hand, the ship speed can be measured and calibrated by differential ground positioning system (DGPS). An actual test on a newly-built vessel was carried out to assess the correlation of power and speed. The Energy-efficiency Design Index or Operational Indicator Monitoring System (EDiMS) software developed by the Dynamics Laboratory-Mokpo Maritime University (DL-MMU) and Green Marine Equipment RIS Center (GMERC) of Mokpo Maritime University was utilized for this investigation. In addition, the software can continuously monitor air emission and is a useful tool for inventory and ship energy management plan. This paper introduces the synchronization and identification method between shaft power and ship speed for EEDI verification in accordance with the ISO guidance.

In this paper, the frontal method based elastic-plastic F.E.M. program for mini-computer was developed. Since, the executable source program size was restricted by the system core memory size on the mini-computer, the active variables were memorized by the element base and the nonactive varables were memorized to the external disc file. The active variables of the finally developed program were reduced enough to execute about 1,000 freedom finite element on the mini-computer on which available variables were restricted as 32,767 integers. A modified CT fracture test specimen was examined to test the developed program. The calculated results were compared with experimental results concerning on the crack tip plastic deformation zone. Recrystallization technique was adopted to visualize the intensive plastic deformation regions. The Von-Mises criterion based calculation results were well agreed with the experimental results in the intensive plastic region which was over than 2% offset strain. The F.E.M. results using the developed program were well agreed with the theoritical plastic boundary which was calculated by the stress intensity factor as r$_{p}$=(K$_{1}$$^{2}$/2.pi..sigma.$_{y}$$^{2}$).f(.theta.).).).

The evaluation of displacement ductility is performed by direct method through tracking the inelastic hysteretic behavior of RC bridge columns subject to cyclic loading using a flexibility-based fiber element mode. To reasonably track the inelastic behavior until the RC bridge column reaches its ultimate state, the average stress-average strain relations and joint elements, which agree well with experiments, are modified and applied considering the tension stiffening behavior and discontinuous displacement between the column and its base. In addition the evaluation of displacement ductility is performed by a direct method easily applicable to numerical analysis. Locations for the integration points, values for the post-crushing concrete strength and low-cycle fatigue failure of longitudinal reinforcement that affect the calculation of yielding and ultimate displacements are proposed for the application to flexibility-based fiber element model. Since less than 10% of error occurs during the displacement ductility analysis, the yielding and ultimate displacements evaluated by the applied analysis method and model appear to be valid.
The behaviour of alloys in the semi-solid state strongly depends on the imposed stress state and on the morphology of the phase which can vary from dendritic to globular. To optimal net shape forging of semi-solid materials, it is important to investigate for filling phenomena in forging process of arbitrarily shaped dies. To produce a automotive part which has good mechanical property, the filling pattern according to die velocity and solid fraction distribution has to be estimated for arbitrarily shaped dies. Therefore, the estimation of filling characteristic in the forging simulation with arbitrarily shaped dies of semi-solid materials are calculated by finite element method with proposed algorithm. The proposed theoretical model and a various boundary conditions for arbitrarily shaped dies is investigated with the coupling calculation between the liquid phase flow and the solid phase deformation. The simulation process with arbitrarily shaped dies is performed to the isothermal conditions of two dimensional problems. To analysis of forging process by using semi-solid materials, a new stress-strain relationship is described, and forging analysis is performed by viscoelastic model for the solid phase and the Darcy's law for the liquid flow. The calculated results for forging force and filling limitations will be compared to experimental data. The filling simulation of simple products performed with the uniform billet temperature(584$^{\circ}C$) from the induction heating by the commercial package MAGMAsoft. The initial step of computation is the touching of semi-solid material with the end of die gate and the initial concept of proposed system just fit with the capability of MAGMAsoft.
The effects of Spinodal decomposition induced phase separated microstructure of InGaAsP/InP heterostructure on photoluminescence(PL) intensity and FWHM(full-width at half maximum) were investigated in this study. Lattice mismatches were measured by double crystal x-ray diffractometer, and the microstructures of phase separated InGaAsP were observed by transmission electron microscopy. It was found that the misfit stress calculated from lattice mismatch was related to the periodicity of Spinodal modulation. Strong dependence of PL intensity and FWHM on the modulation periodicity was also found. For systematic understanding of these observations, the interaction elastic strain energy function induced by misfit stress was proposed. The calculation illustrated that the microstructure of the epilayer such as Spinodal decomposition played an important role in determining the optoelectronic properties such as PL intensity and PL FWHM.

This paper deals with an analytical and experimental investigation to predict the axial thrust load that results from turbocharger operating conditions. The Axial forces acting on the turbocharger thrust bearing are caused by the unbalance between turbine wheel gas forces and compressor wheel air forces. It has a great influence on the friction losses, which reduces the efficiency and performance of high-speed turbocharger. This paper presents the calculation procedure for the axial thrust forces under operating conditions in a turbocharger. The first step is to determine the relationship between thrust forces and strains by experimental and numerical methods. The analysis results were verified by measuring the strains on a thrust bearing with the specially designed test device. And then, the operating strains and temperatures were measured to inversely calculate the thrust strains which were compensated the thermal effects. Therefore it's possible to calculate the magnitudes of the thrust forces under operating turbocharger by comparing the regenerated strains with the rig test results. It will possible to optimize the design of a thrust bearing for reducing the mechanical friction losses using the results.
For a nonlinear control system, there are many uncertainties, such as the structural model, controlled parameters and external loads. Although the significant progress has been achieved on the robust control of nonlinear systems through some researches on this issue, there are still some limitations, for instance, the complicated solving process, weak conservatism of system, involuted structures and high order of controllers. In this study, the computational structural mechanics and optimal control theory are adopted to address above problems. The induced norm is the eigenvalue problem in structural mechanics, i.e., the elastic stable Euler critical force or eigenfrequency of structural system. The segment mixed energy is introduced with a precise integration and an extended Wittrick-Williams (W-W) induced norm calculation method. This is then incorporated in the market-based control (MBC) theory and combined with the force analogy method (FAM) to solve the MBC robust strategy (R-MBC) of nonlinear systems. Finally, a single-degree-of-freedom (SDOF) system and a 9-stories steel frame structure are analyzed. The results are compared with those calculated by the $H{\infty}$-robust (R-$H{\infty}$) algorithm, and show the induced norm leads to the infinite control output as soon as it reaches the critical value. The R-MBC strategy has a better control effect than the R-$H{\infty}$ algorithm and has the advantage of strong strain capacity and short online computation time. Thus, it can be applied to large complex structures.
For reliable determination of mechanical characteristics of adhesively bonded joints used e.g. as input data for computer-aided design of complex components, the thick-adherend tensile-shear test according to ISO 11003-2 is the most important material testing method. Although the total displacement of the joint is measured across the polymer layer directly in the overlap zone in order to minimize the influence of the stepped adherends, the substrate deformation must be taken into account within the framework of the evaluation of the shear modulus and the maximum shear strain, at least when high-strength adhesives are applied. In the standard ISO 11003-2 version of 1993, it was prescribed to perform the substrate deformation correction by means of testing a one-piece reference specimen. The authors, however, pointed to the excessive demands on the measuring accuracy of the extensometers connected with this technique in industrial practice and alternatively proposed a numerical deformation analysis of a dummy specimen. This idea of a mathematical correction was included in the revised ISO 11003-2 version of 2001 but in the simplified form of an analytical method based on Hooke's law of elasticity for small strains. In the present work, it is shown that both calculation techniques yield considerably discordant results. As experimental assessment would require high-precision distance determination (e.g. laser extensometer), finite element analyses of the deformation behavior of the bonded joint are performed in order to estimate the accuracy of the obtained substrate deformation corrections. These simulations reveal that the numerical correction technique based on the finite element deformation modeling of the reference specimen leads to considerably more realistic results.
