  • NAND flash memory is used as a medium for various storage devices due to its high data processing speed with low power consumption. However, since the read processing speed of data is about 10 times faster than the write processing speed, various studies are being conducted to improve the speed difference. In particular, flash dedicated buffer management policies have been studied to improve write speed. However, SSD(solid state disks), which has recently been used for various purposes, is more vulnerable to read performance than write performance. In this paper, we find out why read performance is slower than write performance in SSD composed of NAND flash memory and study buffer management policies to improve it. The buffer management policy proposed in this paper proposes a method of improving the speed of a flash-based storage device by analyzing the pattern of read data and applying a policy of pre-reading data to be requested in the future from NAND flash memory. It also proves the effectiveness of the read-ahead policy through simulation.

  • Block stacking, which involves the storage of unit loads in stacks within storage rows, is typically used in traditional warehouses to achieve a high space utilization at a low investment cost. In this paper, assuming that the demand size from a customer is an i.i.d. random variable, we develop a probabilistic block stacking storage model and its algorithm for a singles product, which minimizes the time-overage floor space requirement under an (s, S) inventory policy and the violation of the FIFO lot rotation rule only in a single partially-occupied row.

  • With two-class-based storage assignment policy and dual command cycle in Automated Storage/Retrieval Systems(AS/RS), the problem of determining the region dedicated for class-one item is considered. First, the expected travel time of the S/R machine is derived when the boundary of the class-one region is square. Secondly, a heuristic procedure is proposed which determines sequentially the class-one region in a discrete rack. An application of the procedure generates leaf shape region which confirms that the L-shape partition is not necessarily optimal.

  • The performance of Storage assignment policies is traditionally evaluated with the storage capacity of and AS/RS taken as given. However, the storage capacity is closely related to the inventory model used in real situations. This paper presents a model of evaluating the performance of three storage policies(random storage, class-based storage, and full turnover-based storage) considering production lot-sizing simultaneously with storage assignment of inventory items. The objective of the model is to achieve a balance of warehouse throughput and space requirements such that a total of material handling cost, production ordering cost, and inventory holding cost is minimized. The effects of the parameters involved in the model are investigated on the performance of each storage policy through example problems.

  • This study examines the current status and policy development of Carbon Dioxide Capture and Storage(CCS), which is a technology to mitigate climate change, in Korea and foreign countries. It also analyzes IEA CCS regulatory framework as a guideline and provides limitations and implications for marine geological storage in the Republic of Korea. Although CCS master plan is established at national level, related laws are not amended and detailed polices are not yet provided. Established 'Intergovernmental CCS committee' lacks its cooperative mechanism and flexibility. Only limited and segmented economic analyses are performed and funding for large scale of CCS project is not secured. In addition, information sharing is limited and public awareness activities are insufficient. Therefore, this paper provides some policy suggestions on establishing a legal framework based on the 'Marine Environmental Management Act', strengthening the role of intergovernmental CCS committee, conducting CCS economic analysis based on various scenarios, providing economic incentives and public participation strategies, and establishing a specialized agency for information sharing.

  • In the recent, due to explosion of Digital Universe, the performance of computer and storage system is reducing. Therefore, the upgrade and capacity expansion needs is growing. Countermeasure for this problem is required fundamental and long-term solutions rather than piecemeal expansion. In this paper, we establish a data management policy for an enterprise through the operational status of storage system and the analysis of data value of it, and implement ILM-based tiered storage system on the basis of these. The results of this study shows the overall throughput was improved about 21% compared to the existing system, it is very effective to maintain continuous quality and reduce operating costs in the long term aspect.

  • Recently the mobile DBMS (Database Management System) is popular to store and manage large data in a mobile device. Especially, the research and development about mobile storage structure and querying method for navigation map data in a mobile device have been performed. The performance of the mobile DBMS in which random data accesses are most queries if the NAND flash memory is used as storage media of the DBMS is degraded. The reason is that the performance of flash memory is good in writing sequentially but bad in writing randomly as the features of the NAND flash memory. So, new storage structure and querying policies of the mobile DBMS are needed in the mobile DBMS in which a flash memory is used as storage media. In this paper, we have studied the policy of the database page management to enhance the performance of the frequent random update and applied this policy to the navigation-specialized mobile DBMS which supports incremental map update. And also we have evaluated the performance of this policy by experiments.

  • In this paper, an approach is presented for determining the required storage capacity of a warehouse with leased public space. Storage assignment policies considered are randomized and class-based storage assignment policies. An analytic model for each of the storage policies is formulated with the objective of minimizing the cost of owned storage space and leased space while satisfying a desired service level of protection against space shortages. Cost functions used in the models are piecewise liear with fixed costs. For the models, algorithms are developed to generate optimal solutions. The approach is applied to the systems where the standard economic-order-quantity inventory model is used for all items being stored in the warehouse.

  • Automatic transfer defined as an integrated system with a number of workstations, interstation storage buffers, automatic device and a control system, play a major role in ass production systems. Due to high capital investment needed for an automatic transferline, greater care should be taken in its design so as to maximize the system performance. One may to control the system performance is to control buffer storage. To control the interstation work-in-process inventory, we propose dual limit switches which control the buffer storage with two parameters, R and r. Under the policy, proceding station is forced down when the inventory level in the buffer reaches R until the level falls to r. For the model developed, we analyze the system characteristics and find the optimal control parameters with a serach procedure.

  • This work is to study the behavior of certain storage systems in which items with different turnover rates are stored. In particular, we assume that items can be divided into two types: high and low turnover. We try to find simple policies that induce favorable zoning, which will reduce the storage and retrieval distance of items. We define a desirable property of a good policy which we call asymptotically efficient, and show that the Zone-z policy is asymptotically efficient if the zone size is proportional to the expected number of high turnover items in the system in equilibrium.
