  • The knowledge on the migration of antimony (Sb) from PET bottles into the water is of greate concern. Antimony in all bottled water marketed in korea and in raw water was analyzed. The detection rate of antimony in total bottled water was 88 % and 100% in PET (Polyethylene terephthalate, PET), 55% in PC (Polycarbonate, PC) bottled water. 55% of raw water contained antimony. The average concentration of Sb in PET bottled water was $0.39{\mu}g/L$, higher than PC bottles ($0.20{\mu}g/L$) and the raw water ($0.22{\mu}g/L$). The migration of Sb into water that is stored in different conditions (room temperature, $45^{\circ}C$, and direct sunlight exposure) was investigated for 180 days. The migration tendency increased with the storage time and temperature. PET bottles showed a sharp increase of Sb concentration at $45^{\circ}C$, but there was no differences between the room temperature and sunlight exposure. The Sb migration in all simulated solution(deionized water, 4% acetic acid, and 20% ethanol) also increased with storage time and temperature. The Sb migration values ranged from 0.35 to $0.49{\mu}g/L$ in all simulated solution, which was far below the permissible korean migration level of $40{\mu}g/L$. There was a tendency that the number of re-use of a bottle and the amount of leaching were in inverse proportion.

  • Owing to the abnormal weather conditions due to global warming, carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology has attracted global attention as a countermeasure to reduce CO2 emissions. In the Pohang CCS demonstration project in South Korea, 100 tons of CO2 were successfully injected into the subsurface CO2 storage in early 2017. However, after the 2017 Pohang earthquake, the Pohang CCS demonstration project was suspended due to an increase in social concerns about the safety of the CCS project. In this study, to reconfirm the structural suitability of the CO2 storage site in the Pohang Basin, we employed seismic imaging based on reverse-time migration (RTM) to analyze small-scale ocean-bottom seismic data, which have not been utilized in previous studies. Compared with seismic images using marine streamer data, the continuity of subsurface layers in the RTM image using the ocean-bottom seismic data is improved. Based on the obtained subsurface image, we discuss the structural suitability of the Pohang CO2 storage site.

  • TOUGH2 was used to simulate the migration of $CO_2$ injected into a sandy aquifer. A series of numerical simulations was performed to investigate the effects of a low-permeability layer (LPL) embedded in the aquifer on the injection rate and the pressure distribution of $CO_2$. The results show that the size and location of the LPL greatly affected the spread of $CO_2$. The pressure difference between two points in the aquifer, one each below and above the LPL, increased as the size of the LPL increased, showing a critical value at 200 m, above which the size effect was diminished. The location of the LPL with respect to the injection well also affected the migration of $CO_2$. When the injection well was at the center of the LPL, the injection rate of $CO_2$ decreased by 5.0% compared to the case with no LPL. However, when the injection well was at the edge of the LPL, the injection rate was decreased by only 1.6%. The vertical distance between the injection point and the LPL also affected the injection rate. The closer the LPL was to the injection point, the lower the injection rate was, by up to 8.3%. Conclusively, in planning geologic storage of $CO_2$, the optimal location of the injection well should be determined considering the distribution of the LPL in the aquifer.

  • Smartphone applications like games, image processing, e-commerce and social networking are gaining exponential growth, with the ubiquity of cellular services. This demands increased computational power and storage from mobile devices with a sufficiently high bandwidth for mobile internet service. But mobile nodes are highly constrained in the processing and storage, along with the battery power, which further restrains their dependability. Adopting the unlimited storage and computing power offered by cloud servers, it is possible to overcome and turn these issues into a favorable opportunity for the growth of mobile cloud computing. As the mobile internet data traffic is predicted to grow at the rate of around 65 percent yearly, even advanced services like 3G and 4G for mobile communication will fail to accommodate such exponential growth of data. On the other hand, developers extend popular applications with high end graphics leading to smart phones, manufactured with multicore processors and graphics processing units making them unaffordable. Therefore, to address the need of resource constrained mobile nodes and bandwidth constrained cellular networks, the computations can be migrated to resourceful servers connected to cloud. The server now acts as a bridge that should enable the participating mobile nodes to offload their computations through Wi-Fi directly to the virtualized server. Our proposed model enables an on-demand service offloading with a decision support system that identifies the capabilities of the client's hardware and software resources in judging the requirements for offloading. Further, the node's location, context and security capabilities are estimated to facilitate adaptive migration.

  • In case waste disposal site is to be constructed close to the underground facilities such as LPG storage cavern which is completely maintained by groundwater pressure, it is generally requested that the possibility on leachate contamination of cavern area be reviewed and the countermeasure, if it is estimated cavern area is severely affected by leachate, be taken into consideration. Prediction was performed and leachate control plan was made using by analytical and the numerical analysis on the leachate migration which is likely to happen at the area between the proposed waste disposal site and the underground LPG storage cavern located at the U petrochemical complex. Analytical solutions were obtained by the conservative mass advection-diffusion equation and the effect of advection and dispersion factor on the leachate migration was reviewed through peclet number calculation and the functional relationship between the factors and leachate transport velocity was established, which leads to enable us to predict the leachate transport velocity without difficulties when different parameters (factors) are used for analytical solution. Numerical solutions were obtained by FEM using AQUA2D which is for the simulation of groundwater flow and contaminant transport. 3-D discrete fracture models were simulated and fracture flow analysis was performed and feasibility study on the water-curtain system was conducted through the fracture connectivity analysis in rock mass. As results of those analyses, it was interpreted that the leachate would trespass on the LPG storage cavern area in 30 years from the proposed wate disposal site and the vertical water-curtain system was effective mathod for the prevention of leachate's migration further into the cavern area.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the transfer rate of I-menthol constituent into cigarette case and delivery rate to cigarette smoke. Test sample was used a light-type standard brand cigarette made in Korea. I-Menthol contents was measured according to A.O.A.C(1990) method by G.C and smoking conditions was a puff volume of 35$m\ell$ and 2.0s duration, taken once per minute to filter tipping paper plus 3mmwith 20 cigarettes. Migration rate of menthol into cigarette case had an interrelation with triacetin contents into filter and 6% triacetin level was most suitable. I-Menthol transferred to filter part from tobacco sheet by 20.2% in one month after cigarette manufacture, and the transfer was continued subsequently. Maximum menthol transfer in five months was 4.1% to foils and other packing materials and the loss outside of cigarette pack was also 3.9% below. The migration balance of menthol into cigarette pack and the delivery to cigarette smoke were the optimum condition when menthol was added at the ration of 30% in filter to 70% in the other parts into cigarette.

  • In this paper, we propose AST-AET(Average valid Start Time-Average valid End Time) data migration strategy based on the storage structure where temporal data is divided into a past segment, a current segment, and a future segment. We define AST and AET which are used in AST-AET data migration strategy and also define entity versions to be stored in each segment. We describe methods to compute AST and AET, and processes to search entity versions for migration and move them. We compare average response times for user queries between AST-AET data migration strategy and the existing LST-GET(Least valid Start Time-Greatest valid End Time) data migration strategy. The experimental results show that, when there are no LLTs(Long Lived Tuples), there is little difference in performance between the two migration strategies because the size of a current segment is nearly equal. However, when there are LLTs, the average response time of AST-AET data migration strategy is smaller than that of LST-GET data migration strategy because the size of a current segment of LST-GET data migration strategy becomes larger. In addition, when we change average interarrival times of temporal queries, generally the average response time of AST-AET data migration strategy is smaller than that of LST-GET data migration strategy.

  • Cracking of rice caused by moisture migration during storage under different relative humidity conditions was investigated for the establishment of safe storage condition of rice. Rice was cracked when a large difference in equilibrium relative humidity $({\Delta}ERH)$ between the rice and the environment was present. External and internal cracks were generated as the results of moisture desorption and adsorption, respectively. The external cracks by moisture desorption generated in all directions and shaped irregularly, while the internal cracks by moisture adsorption did in radial direction and showed a typical shape. The cracking trend could be analyzed by the Weibull function, and the cracking constant increased with ${\Delta}ERH$. The frequency of cracked rice increased linearly with In $({\Delta}ERH)$. The critical crack-inducing ${\Delta}ERH$ was $11.3{\sim}16.4%$ during desorption and $10.8{\sim}17.1%$ during adsorption. A diagram for the safe storage of rice was developed with respect to the initial moisture content and the water activity of rice.

  • A successful operation of underground oil storage cavern depends on water-tightness around cavern by groundwater. If water-tightness is not secured, gas bubbles would leak out and oil would migrate to an adjacent empty cavern. In this research an electrical analogy method was employed to study the influence of shape of cavern on gas leakage and the required natural groundwater level, relative oil level in two neighboring caverns and cavern spacing to prevent oil migration. The results show that gas leakage is prevented from a cavern with a ceiling of large curvature. The required values of factors to curtail the migration of oil are given on a graph.

  • Recently the need for Location-Based Service (LBS) has increased due to the development and widespread use of the mobile devices (e.g., PDAs, cellular phones, labtop computers, GPS, and RFID etc). The core technology of LBS is a moving-objects database that stores and manages the positions of moving objects. To search for information quickly, the database needs to contain an index that supports both real-time position tracking and management of large numbers of updates. As a result, the index requires a structure operating in the main memory for real-time processing and requires a technique to migrate part of the index from the main memory to disk storage (or from disk storage to the main memory) to manage large volumes of data. To satisfy these requirements, this paper suggests a unified index scheme unifying the main memory and the disk as well as migration policies for migrating part of the index from the memory to the disk during a restriction in memory space. Migration policy determines a group of nodes, called the migration subtree, and migrates the group as a unit to reduce disk I/O. This method takes advantage of bulk operations and dynamic clustering. The unified index is created by applying various migration policies. This paper measures and compares the performance of the migration policies using experimental evaluation.
