  • The Daejanggakgibi Stele of Silleuksa Temple in Yeoju is a stone stele from the Goryeo Dynasty that is inscribed with various stories about the construction of Daejanggak, a place where Buddhist scriptures were kept. This stele has been maintained for a long time in a state in which discoloration of the body has occurred, and the inscription has been partially damaged due to dozens of cracks. Using non-destructive analysis methods for stone artifacts, material investigation, portable X-ray fluorescence analysis, and ultrasonic velocity analysis for the stele were performed. It was confirmed that the stele body was composed of light gray crystalline limestone, and the base stone, support stone, and cover stone were medium-grained biotite granite. Portable X-ray fluorescence analysis confirmed that iron(Fe) was an original coloring element of the stele surface. From the distribution pattern of the coloration, it can be inferred that iron-containing materials flew down from between the stele body and the cover stone. Thereafter, living organisms or organic contaminants attached to it so that yellow and black contaminants were formed. Ultrasonic diagnosis revealed that the physical property of both the front and back surfaces ranged from fresh rocks(FR) to completely weathered rocks(CW), and the average weathering index was grade 3(intermediate). However, the point where cracks developed intensively was judged to be the completely weathered stage(CW), and some cracks located in the upper and lower parts of the stele bear potentially very high risk. It is necessary to monitor the movement of these cracks and establish reinforcement measures for conservation in the future.

  • Let V be any valuation domain and let E be a subset of the quotient field K of V. We study the ring of integer-valued polynomials on E, that is, Int(E, V)={f$\in$K[X]|f(E)⊆V}. We show that, if E is precompact, then Int(E, V) has many properties similar to those of the classical ring Int(Z).In particular, Int(E, V) is dense in the ring of continuous functions C(E, V); each finitely generated ideal of Int(E, V) may be generated by two elements; and finally, Int(E, V) is a Prufer domain.

  • The face of the Seated Stone Buddha Korean Treasure No.84 of Sinboksa Templesite in Gangneung was contaminated with a glossy resin, spoiling its beauty. The contaminants covered the face, the forehead of the urna, to the bottom of the jaw. FT-IR analysis on a sample of the contaminants identified the substance as cyanoacrylate instant adhesive, which can normally be melted with acetone and removed with a swab. However, given that the surface of the statue was severely weathered from prolonged open-air exposure, alternative removal procedures were considered, to minimize the possibility of physical damage. After research, two removal procedures were utilized: one procedure involving poultices, which had been used to remove graffiti from the Samjeondobi Stele, and one procedure involving steam sterilization, which has been used to remove resin from pottery and porcelain. When both the poultices and steam sterilization were applied together, the resin was removed within twenty-four hours, without physical work using a swab.

  • This study was carried out to investigate adsorption characteristics of residual pesticides on an adsorbent. $Bauxsol^{TM}$ and mackban-stone as adsorbent were used. Analytical method for residual pesticides was established by GC/NPD and $GC/{\mu}ECD$. Pesticides used in this study were ${\alpha}$-endosulfan, ${\beta}$-endosulfan, pendimethalin and chlorpyrifos-methyl, fenitrothion, and recovery rates were more than 97%. Adsorption rate on an adsorbent was decreased in order of endosulfan, chlorpyrifos-methyl, pendimethalin, fenitrothion. Organochlorine pesticides showed higher removal rate than the other pesticides. $Bauxsol^{TM}$ gave both chemical decomposition and physical adsorption. Mackban-stone gave only physical adsorption on the other hand. The high pH and chloric ions structure of eluted solution have greatly affected at chemical resolution. The removal rate of pesticides was increased due to the physical property of adsorbent, i.e. high porosity. The above adsorbent is to be a candidate to remove residual pesticides in water and pond of links.

  • The Jurassic granites, commercially called Yangu stone in the Pocheon-Euijeongbu area, have generally compact and coarse-grained textures, which could be classified into two types; grey granite(Gg) and light pink granite(Gp). Specific gravity, absorption ratio and prosity of Gg and Gp in physical property are 2.64 and 2.61, 0.32 % and 0.44 %, 0.86% and 1.13 %, respectively. These higher values of two latters of Gp than those of Gg are due to the more abundant microcracks in Gp. Compressive strength og Gg than those of Gg are due to more abundant microcracks in Gp. Compressive strength og Gg and Gp are 1,726 kg/cm2 and 1,717 kg/cm, respectively and bestrength has a positive proportion with Qz+Af+Pl(quartz+alkali feldspar+plagioclase) modes without trending with Bt+Ac(biotite+accessories). Tensile strength has the positive proportions with Qz+Af+Pl and Bt+Ac. While Bt+Ac has a negative trend with abrasive hardness, Qz+A+Pl shows a positive one. These may suggest Qz+Af+Pl mainly affects on strenghts potentional dimension stone than Gp.

  • One of the basic physical properties of the hardened cement paste, the rigidity, is deteriorated during concrete matrix forming, depending on the replacement rate of the crushed stone powder, and due to drying shrinkage. Therefore, the concrete containing crushed stone powder has been limitedly used as non-structural construction material. To improve these disadvantages, a hydrothermal reaction employing method can be considered. High-temperature and high-pressure water is involved in the hydrothermal reaction in the mixing with specific materials. The rigidity improving mechanism is related to the synthesis of calcium silicate. The calcium silicate is produced through reaction between calcium compounds and the silicic acid. Various kinds of calcium silicate can be produced depending on the CaO/$SiO_2$ mole ratio, the temperature of the hydrothermal synthesis, the pressure, and the reaction time. The product of the synthesis mechanism, tobermorite crystal, plays a pivotal role for the rigidity reinforcement. The crushed stone powder, analyzed in this study, contains 50 to 60% of $SiO_2$ and 10 to 20% $Al_2O_3$. The composite rate is appropriate to create the tobermorite crystal through formation of hardened cement matrix under the hydrothermal synthetic conditions and with the CaO in the cement. Moreover, further reinforcement was promoted using the property of material under the identical density through promoting the formation of tobermorite crystal.

  • Celestial Chart Stones (original and reproduction) in the National Palace Museum are representative scientific cultural heritage of Korea. Material analysis and nondestructive deterioration assessment were conducted for long-term preservation of these stones. Material analysis revealed that the original was composed of slate and the reproduction was made of dolostone. The original consists of quartz, mica, dolomite minerals, while the reproduction was made up of dolomite, calcite and forsterite. Major deterioration factors of the original stone were cracks and breakouts. In case of the reproduction, scratches and artificial materials were mainly observed. The green and black surface contaminants present at the sides and back of the two celestial chart stones were interpreted as resin-based paint materials. The physical property evaluation using ultrasonic velocity showed a low velocity in the upper left side of the original, while the front right side of the reproduction showed a weak property. Meanwhile, the To-Tc method using ultrasonic velocity was applied to major cracks that impede stability of the original. As a result, it has been calculated that the beginning and the center of the crack are the deepest.

  • Amethyst is a precious stone in Korea. As natural quartz are usually mixed with smoky quartz, amethyst, and milky quartz, we need to evaluate the amount of the amethyst quantitatively in ores. Although the optical evaluation with bare eyes has been common in assay so far, we propose that the diamagnetic property and microstructural difference characterization be the solution for the evaluating the quartz ores. In addition, FTIR (Fourier transformation infra-red) could help to identify the amethyst transparency. We report that we could evaluate the amethyst quantitatively with M-H hysteresis characterization, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observation and FTIR characterization.

  • The wide application of disc springs to the designing of mechanical products with space limit is mainly attributable to their property of sustaining large axial load with small displacement. Due to the impediments in expecting the final results caused by the significant differences existing between a single unit and a stacked form, the force-displacement characteristics of a single disc spring and stacked disc springs are mainly examined in this study. In particular, the hysteresis of the series stack and the parallel stack will be investigated through the FE analysis and the analytical results will finally be compared with the acquired experimental data. In the final result, the analytical results were in accordance with the experimental data.
