An extensive corrosion study was initiated by galvalume steel sheet manufacturing company to clarify the corrosion behavior of zinc and zinc and zinc-alloy coated automotive sheet steel in out panel and electrical application. Since the early 1980's the use of zinc and aluminum alloy coated steel for vehicular corrosion protection has increased drastically. This paper describes the evaluation of formability, weldability and painted corrosion performance of galvalume steel sheet. This paper presents an overview of the program and some initial test results on the weldability, lifetime of the electrode tip shape of the spot welding and corrosion protection. Galvalume steel sheet improved corrosion performance and spot weldability of galvalume steel has no problem for the variation of welding current. And tip lifetime was changed according to the influence of shape.
Corrosion resistance is one of the essential properties required in steel bolts. The various types of coatings are used to improve the corrosion resistance of steel bolts. But, roll formed, subsequently Zn alloy electrodeposited and top coated steel bolt easily takes place the white storage stain or white rust under high humidity condition. To investigate the corrosion resistance of roll formed and subsequently the various types of coated steel bolts, their polarization curves were measured by potentio-dynamic tester in this study. Based on the measured polarization curves, the more times of chromate and top coating on roll formed steel bolt, the higher corrosion resistance was shown. The roll formed steel bolt, which was Zn-Ni electro-deposited, two times chromated, one time inorganic top coated, one time organic top coated and annealed, showed the best corrosion resistance.
Taiwan has a typical marine climate featuring perennial high-temperature and dampness. This climate, together with the emission of various industrial corrosive waste gases in recent years, contributes a lot to the corrosion of metal materials. In this study, samples of carbon steel exposed to various atmospheres in Taiwan were analyzed to investigate the impacts of atmospheric factors on carbon steel corrosion. Carbon steel samples were collected from 87 experimental stations between 2009 and 2012. Statistical analysis was employed to investigate the correlations between the carbon steel corrosion situations and the atmospheric factors such as concentrations of sulfur dioxide or chloride, exposure time, rainfall, etc. The results indicate that for samples from industrial areas, the sulfur dioxide concentration and exposure time during fall and winter are significantly correlated to the condition of the carbon steel corrosion. However, for samples from coastal zones, the significant correlated factors are chloride concentration and wetting time during winter. The results of this study are useful for the development of carbon steel corrosion prediction models.

Stainless steel has poor corrosion resistance in marine environment due to the breakdown of a passive film caused by chloride. It suffers electrochemical corrosion like pitting corrosion, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion crack (SCC) in marine environment. In general, it indicates that the passive film of $Al_2O_3$ has better corrosion resistance than that of $Cr_2O_3$ in seawater. This paper investigated the damage behavior 304 stainless steel and hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel in seawater solution. Various electrochemical experiments were carried out including potential measurement, potentiodynaimic experiment, Tafel analysis and galvanostatic experiment. As a result of anodic polarization experiment, higher pitting damage depth was indicated at 304 stainless steel than hot-dip aluminized 304 stainless steel. In addition, relatively higher corrosion current density was shown at hot-dip aluminized stainless steel as a result of Tafel analysis.
The injection concentration of corrosion inhibitor increases under the pH 7, temperature of 2$0^{\circ}C$, and alkalinity of 35 mg/l (as CaCO$_3$), the corrosion rate gradually decreased. When the corrosion inhibitor of 10 mg/l is injected, the corrosion rate for carbon steel pipe, galvanized steel pipe, and copper pipe reduces for 37, 66 and 61 % respectively that it is more efficient on galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe. As a result of examination of corrosion rate at pH 6, 7, and 8 when injecting 10 mg/l of corrosion inhibitor under the conditions of 2$0^{\circ}C$ in water temperature and 35 mg/l (as CaCO$_3$) in alkalinity, the efficiency of the corrosion inhibitor increases as the pH increases. For carbon steel pipe, it does not show much a difference with the change of the pH condition, but galvanized steel pipe and copper pipe clearly show the corrosion rate depending on the change of the pH condition. The efficiency of corrosion inhibitor is low as the concentration of residual chlorine is high, but it does not show a great influence at 0.4 mg/l or less. For each pipe type, in the case of carbon steel pipe, the range of increase of corrosion speed following the residual chloride is higher than the other pipe types. In the meantime, the effect following the residual chlorine in copper pipe is low.
In this study the effect of different surface finishing techniques on the pitting corrosion behaviour of a commercial 304 stainless steel alloy was investigated. Surface finishing methods were divided into two categories, i.e. mechanical and chemical. Mechanical treatment methods include power tooling such as grinding, emery paper brushing, stainless steel wire brushing and stainless steel shot blasting. Chemical treatment methods include chemical passivation (phosphoric acid, citric acid, nitric acid) and electro-cleaning (phosphoric acid and citric acid). Potentiodynamic polarization experiments were carried out in 3.5 wt. % NaCl solution at room temp. (20 $^{\circ}C$). The results showed that chemical treatment methods improved the corrosion resistance of stainless steel 304, measured in terms of pitting potential ($E_{pit}$). Corrosion resistance of the specimens was increased in the order of; electro-cleaning > manual passivation > mechanical cleaning. Surface of electro-cleaned specimens was smoother than rest of the surface treatment methods. Chrome content in chemically treated specimens was higher than in mechanically treated specimens as shown by EDX analysis.
The corrosion behavior of a ferritic/martensitic steel T91 exposed to an aqueous solution containing chloride and sulfate ions is investigated depending on the stimulated all-volatile treatment (AVT) and under oxygenated treatment (OT) conditions. The corrosion of T91 steel under OT condition is severe, while the corrosion under AVT condition is not. The co-existence of chloride and sulfate ions has antagonistic effect on the corrosion of T91 steel in both AVT and OT conditions. Unlike to corrosion resistance in the aqueous solution, OT pretreatment provides T91 steel lower oxidation-resistance than VAT pretreatment. From scanning electron microscopy/energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis, the lower corrosion resistance in the aqueous solution by VAT conditions possibly is due to the formation of pits. In addition, the lower oxidation resistance of T91 steel pretreated by OT conditions is explained as follows: the cracks formed during the immersion under OT conditions accelerated peeling-off rate of the oxide film.
Corrosion of steel reinforcement is the most important mode of concrete structures damages. It strongly depends on the composition and physicochemical properties of the cementitious medium. The use of waste materials as lightweight aggregates in concrete is environmentally recommended in polluted environments such as marine and/or industrial atmospheres in order to reduce its porosity and ensure the requested protection of reinforcing steel. The present study investigated the effect of waste cork addition on corrosion resistance of steel rebar in mortar specimen prepared in the laboratory. The main objective of this study was to improve the corrosion resistance of reinforcing steel. Another objective of this study was to valorize this ecological product and preserve the environment. Results obtained from various electrochemical tests indicated that the presence of a fine cork powder substantially improved the corrosion resistance of steel in the mortar contaminated by chloride ions. This improvement was reflected by a notable decrease in corrosion current density and a shift of corrosion potential of the steel towards more noble values. Moreover, the presence of a fine cork powder in the mortar had no adverse effect on its mechanical properties.
In order to develop a method of corrosion fatigue design and estimate reliability of TMCP steel using as the material of heavy industries and plants, its corrosion susceptibilities, corrosion fatigue strength, and determination of fatigue design criterion considering corrosion degradation were investigated. From the results, the corrosion characteristic of TMCP steel is very susceptible in 3.5wt.% NaCl solution. Its susceptibility was linearly increased with the solution temperature increase. The corrosion fatigue strength in $25${\circ}$, 3.5wt.% NaCl solution is very lower than that of in air. And also, it was decreased with the frequency decrease in the same environment. It is expected that the developed corrosion fatigue design method for TMCP steel is useful. However, it is necessary to verify its reliability for actual application.
This study investigates the effects of corrosion resistance characteristics of opponent materials in relative motion on the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel. Pin specimens made of mild carbon steel are tested at several sliding speeds against mating discs made of two types of alloyed steels, such as type D2 tool steel (STD11) and type 420 stainless steel (STS420J2), with different corrosion resistance characteristics in a pin-on-disc type sliding wear test machine. The results clearly show that the sliding wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the corrosion resistance characteristics of the mating disc materials at low sliding speeds. However, the sliding wear behavior at high sliding speeds is irrelevant to the characteristics because of the rising temperature. During the steady state wear period, the sliding wear rate of mild carbon steel against the type 420 stainless steel at a sliding speed of 0.5 m/s increases considerably unlike against the type D2 tool steel. This may be because the better corrosion resistance characteristics achieve a worse tribochemical reactivity. However, during the running-in wear period at low sliding speeds, the wear behavior of mild carbon steel is influenced by the microstructure after heat treatment of the mating disc materials rather than by their corrosion resistance characteristics.
