Dynamic responses of electrorheological (ER) fluids in steady pressure flow to stepwise electric field excitations are investigated experimentally. The transient periods under various applied electric fields and flow velocities were determined from the pressure behavior of the ER fluid in the flow channel with two parallel-plate electrodes. The pressure response times were exponentially decreased with the increase of the flow velocity, but increased with the increase of the applied electric field strength. In order to investigate the cluster structure formation of the ER particles, it was verified using the flow visualization technique that the transient response of ER fluids in the flow mode is assigned to the densification process in the competition of the electric field-induced particle attractive interaction forces and the hydrodynamic forces, unlike that in the shear mode determined by the aggregation process.
Flow instability is investigated in a two-dimensional channel with thin baffles placed symmetrically in the vertical direction and periodically in the streamwise dircetion. At low Reynolds numbers, the flow is steady and symmetric. Above a critical Reynolds number, the steady flow undergoes a Hopf bifurcation leading to unsteady periodic flow. As Reynolds number further increases, we observe the onset of secondary instability. At high Reynolds numbers, the two-dimensional periodic flow becomes three dimmensional. To identify the onset of secondary instability, we carry out Floquet stability analysis. We obseved the transition to 3D flow at a Reynolds number of about 125. Also, we computed dominant spanwise wavenumbers near the critical Reynolds number, and visualized vortical structures associated with the most unstable spanwise wave.
For construction and design of tunnels, groundwater flow models are used to find the influence of groundwater to the stability of tunnels considering the geological condition around the tunnels and the materials used in tunnel linings. For the analysis of tunnel flow, some commercial programs, e.g. MODFLOW, SEEP/W etc., are used. These programs have limitations that MODFLOW could not define curved surface smoothly in three dimensional flow media and SEEP/W is the 2-dimensional flow model. In this paper, the ability of a finite element program developed for analyzing 3-dimensional groundwater flow is examined. Confined steady state groundwater flow solution in non-homogeneous media is obtained using isoparametric element with eight trilinear hexahedron nodes and is compared with the result of MODFLOW. It was found that the solution yielded a good result with the three dimensional flow studied.
Hemodynamic shear stress, the frictional force acting on vascular endothelial cells, is crucial for endothelial homeostasis under normal physiological conditions. When discussing blood flow effects on various forms of endothelial (dys)function, one considers two flow patterns: steady laminar flow and disturbed flow because endothelial cells respond differently to these flow types both in vivo and in vitro. Laminar flow which exerts steady laminar shear stress is atheroprotective while disturbed flow creates an atheroprone environment. Emerging evidence has provided new insights into the cellular mechanisms of flowdependent regulation of vascular function that leads to cardiovascular events such as atherosclerosis, atherothrombosis, and myocardial infarction. In order to study effects of shear stress and different types of flow, various models have been used. In this review, we will summarize our current views on how disturbed flow-mediated signaling pathways are involved in the development of atherosclerosis.
The thermocapillary flow in a differentially heated cylindrical liquid bridge under steady rotation of the hot disk is considered in the limit of zero capillary number. Steady flow states and their three-dimensional stability are calculated numerically. A linear stability analysis reveals that the most dangerous perturbations are oscillatory with azimuthal wavenumber m=1 or m=2 depending on the parameters.
We present an axisymmetric model containing only one chimney to study how convection affects the flow in a steady state chimney. We find that the mass fraction of solid in a mush and the depth of a mush when the strength of convection is given. We use the knowledge of the variables in the mush to find the fluid flow in the chimney Our procedure employs the von $K{\acute{a}}rm{\acute{a}}n$-Pohlhausen technique for determining chimney flow and makes use of the fact that the radius of the chimney is much less than the thickness of the mush.
As a result of environmental concerns, the production of electricity through renewable energy resources is rapidly increasing. Wind energy is among the fastest growing renewable energy resources now being integrated in the power system, and the penetration rate of wind generation has been gradually increased. For power flow analysis of the recent systems, thus, steady-state modeling of wind turbines and their application are of great importance. This paper presents the procedure we applied for implementation of a steady-state wind turbine model in power flow.

Unsteady flow simulations through a transonic turbine vane were carried out for an isentropic Mach number of 1.02 and a Reynolds number of $10^6$. The main objective of the study is to investigate the effect of unsteadiness due to vortex shedding on the flow in transonic regime. The steady and the time-averaged unsteady results by employing three different turbulence models: shear stress transport (SST), k-${\omega}$, and ${\omega}$ Reynolds stress models were compared. The comparisons were emphasized on the isentropic Mach number along the blade and total pressure loss at the cascade exit. The results showed that both steady and unsteady calculations have good agreement with experimental data along the blade surface. However, at cascade exit, the unsteady calculations have much better agreement with experimental data than steady calculations. Based on these, we conclude that the unsteady flow calculations are essential for these types of problems.
The recirculating flows which occur in the prosthetic heart valve have been known to cause several diseases in the human body. And the recent studies show that the shear stress at the wall of the artery is also very important factor in the formation of thrombus. And many studies knave been devoted in obtaining more information about the blood flow through the prosthetic heart valve. In this Paper, the steady axisymmetric flow through the Disc-Type Heart Valve is studied by using the numerical method. The geometry of the Disc-Type Heart Valve is simplified, and the flow is assumed to be steady axisymmetric flow. The vorticity transport equation derived from the Wavier-Stoke's equation is used as the governing equation, and the explicit finite difference method is used to obtain the steady state solution. The results for several Reynolds numbers show that the recirculating flow becomes large as the Remolds number increases. Furthermore, it can be shown that the magnitudes of the vorticity and the stresses are also increased with the Reynolds number, but there is only a little change in their configurations of distribution and in their positions of maximum values.
