  • The high temperature properties of vanadium and molybdenum added high silicon ductile iron, so called V-Mo-Si ductile iron, were investigated. The (V,Mo) complex carbides and Mo carbides precipitated at the cellular boundaries of the as-cast specimens. The microhardness of the (V,Mo) carbides were in the range of 553-619, while that of the Mo carbides in the range of 341-390. The thermo-mechanical tests were carried out with a Gleeble system at 700 and $800^{\circ}C$ under vacuum condition. The tensile strengths of the specimen tested at $700^{\circ}C$ with the dynamic deformation rate of 50 mm/sec and those with the static deformation rate of 0.15 mm/sec were 235.7 and 115.3 MPa, while the reduction in area were 23.7 and 22.4%, respectively. At the high dynamic deformation rates, the tensile strength was steeply increased due to promoting the brittle fracture of pearlite in the matrix of the specimens. But the changes of the reduction in area with the deformation rates on the same specimens were negligible. The weight gain of the V-Mo-Si specimens oxidized in the air atmosphere for 6 hours at 800 and $900^{\circ}C$ were 1.1 and 4.1.%, respectively. The cross-sectional microstructure of oxidized specimens consisted of the porous external scale layer grown outside from the original surface, the dense internal scale layer grown into the original surface, the decarburized ferrite layer between the internal scale and the matrix of base metal. The (V,Mo) carbides and Mo carbides formed in the matrix of as-cast specimen did not decompose during oxidation at 900 for 24 hours in air atmosphere.

  • One of the most performed action in daily life is standing up from sitting position. As the population of the world is aging at the high rates, people may face problems with reduced muscle strength as well as psychological changes. This can lead elderly people having difficulties with standing up from chair. Now, with the aging trend worldwide, products are being developed that can support the lives of the elderly. This study examines the distribution of hip pressure in relation to the seating positions of the standing assistance seats under development to prevent standing up accidents in older adults. The currently developing standing assistant chair designed to tilt to a maximum angle of 25 degrees. At over $25^{\circ}$, design considers that older people are at risk of thrown back out of that force and that the forces exerted on their arms and legs can be a significant burden to older people. By considering danger of higher than $25^{\circ}$ for older people which is experimented in the basis of static capturing approach in previous papers, it is experimented people with age group of 20~60 on $0^{\circ}$ to $25^{\circ}$ tilting angle on the basis of dynamic capturing method in order to pick convenient angle of inclination. Moreover, tried to find the optimum angle by comparing the hip pressure distribution when seated at the edge of the seat and at the center of the seat with the pressure distribution sensor.

  • As advanced earthquake analysis/design methods such as the nonlinear static analysis are developed, it is required to estimate precisely the cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete members that is characterized by strength, deformability, and capacity of energy dissipation. However, currently, estimation of energy dissipation depends on empirical equations that are not sufficiently accurate, or experiment and sophisticated numerical analysis which are difficult to use in practice.0 the present study, nonlinear finite element analysis was performed to investigate the behavioral characteristics of flexure-dominant RC members under cyclic load. The effects of axial force, arrangement of reinforcing bars, and reinforcement ratio on the cyclic behavior were studied. Based on the investigation, a simplified method to estimate the capacity of energy dissipation was proposed, and it was verified by the comparison with the finite element analyses and experiments. The proposed method can estimate the energy dissipation of RC members more precisely than currently used empirical equations, and it is easily applicable in practice.

  • The tensile and bond performance of GFRP rebar are different from those of conventional steel reinforcement. It requires some studies on concrete members reinforced with GFRP reinforcing bars to apply it to concrete structures. GFRP has some advantages such as high specific strength, low weight, non-corrosive nature, and disadvantage of larger deflection due to the lower modulus of elasticity than that of steel. Bridge deck is a preferred structure to apply FRP rebars due to the increase of flexural capacity by arching action. This paper focuses on the behavior of concrete bridge deck reinforced with newly developed GFRP rebar. A total of three real size bridge deck specimens were made and tested. Main variable was reinforcement ratio of GFRP rebar. Static test was performed with the load of DB-24 level until failure. Test results were compared and analyzed with ultimate load, deflection behavior.

  • Many different types of fan have been applying to various industrial fields. Fan design methods are much different depending on the types of fan, operating conditions, and connecting parts at the inlet or exit of the fan etc. In this study, design methods for an axial-type suction fan are studied. This fan discharges the air in the relative static pressure of -285Pa to the atmosphere with the flow rate of $960m^3/min$. For three-dimensional blade design, three different design methods were applied, such as the free vortex method, the exponential method, and the cascade method. In the cascade method, the blade loading along the radial direction was obtained from the lift coefficient which was necessary to obtain the pressure rise on a fan rotor. This method is different from the free vortex and the exponential method which control the strength of the vortex. The fan performance prediction was conducted using the CFD with three different inlet ducts. The best fan performance was obtained when the fan was designed by using the cascade method. The designed fan using the exponential method showed better performance compared to a fan designed using the free vortex method. However, the fan performance was changed depending on the installed inlet ducts. So, an efficient fan can be designed with the adjustment of design variables on the basis of the flow structures within the fan as well as the fan design procedure.

  • Recent test results of steel moment connections repaired with a haunch on the bottom side of the beam have been shown to be a very promising solution to enhancing the seismic performance of steel moment-resisting frames. Yet, little is known about the effects of using such a repair scheme on the global seismic response of structures. When haunches are incorporated in a steel moment frame, the response prediction is complicated by the presence of "dual" panel zones. To investigate the effects of a repair on seismic performance, a case study was conducted for a 13-story steel frame damaged during the 1994 Northridge earthquake. It was assumed that only those locations with reported damage would be repaired with haunches. A new analytical modeling technique for the dual panel zone developed by the author was incorporated in the analysis. Modeling the dual panel zone was among the most significant consideration in the analyses. Both the inelastic static and dynamic analyses did not indicate detrimental side effects resulting from the repair. As a result of the increased strength in dual panel zones, yielding in these locations were eliminated and larger plastic rotation demand occurred in the beams next to the shallow end of the haunches. Nevertheless, the beam plastic rotation demand produced by the Sylmar record of 1994 Northridge earthquake was still limited to 0.017 radians. The repair resulted in a minor increase in earthquake energy input. In the original structure, the panel zones should dissipate about 80% (for the Oxnard record) and 70% (for the Sylmar record) of the absorbed energy, assuming no brittle failure of moment connections. After repair, the energy dissipated in the panel zones and beams were about equal.

  • In this paper, the effects of nonlinear soft clay on dynamic embedment of offshore pipeline were investigated. Seabed embedment by pipe-soil interactions has impacts on the structural boundary conditions for various subsea structures such as pipeline, riser, pile, and many other systems. A number of studies have been performed to estimate real soil behavior, but their estimation of seabed embedment has not been fully identified and there are still many uncertainties. In this regards, comparison of embedment between field survey and existing empirical models has been performed to identify uncertainties and investigate the effect of nonlinear soil parameter on dynamic embedment. From the comparison, it is found that the dynamic embedment with installation effects based on nonlinear soil model have an influence on seabed embedment. Therefore, the pipe embedment under dynamic condition by nonlinear parameters of soil models was investigated by Dynamic Embedment Factor (DEF) concept, which is defined as the ratio of the dynamic and static embedment of pipeline, in order to overcome the gap between field embedment and currently used empirical and numerical formula. Although DEF through various researches is suggested, its range is too wide and it does not consider dynamic laying effect. It is difficult to find critical parameters that are affecting to the embedment result. Therefore, the study on dynamic embedment factor by soft clay parameters of nonlinear soil model was conducted and the sensitivity analyses about parameters of nonlinear soil model were performed as well. The tendency on dynamic embedment factor was found by conducting numerical analyses using OrcaFlex software. It is found that DEF was influenced by shear strength gradient than other factors. The obtained results will be useful to understand the pipe embedment on soft clay seabed for applying offshore pipeline designs such as on-bottom stability and free span analyses.

  • This study presents a probabilistic analysis of the stability of homogeneous soil slopes during earthquakes. The stability of the slope is measured through its probability of failure rather than the customary factor of safety. The maximum horizontal ground acceleration is deterimined with Donovan and McGuire equation. The earthquake magnitude (m) is a random variable the Probability density function f(m) has been obtained with a use of Richter law. The potential failure surfaces are taken to be of an exponential shape (log-spiral) , Uncertainties of the shear strength parameters along potential failure surface are expressed by one-dimensional random field model. From a first order analysis the mean and variance of safety margin is osculated. The dependence on significant seismic parameters of the probability of failure of the slope is examined and the results are presented in a number of graphs and tables. On the base of the results obtained in this study, it is concluled that (1) the present model is useful in assessing the reliability of soil slopes under both static and seismic conditions: and (2) the probability of failure of a soil slope is greatly affected by the values of the seismic parameters that are associated with it.

  • Acute transverse myelitis(ATM) is defined as an acute intramedullary dysfunction of the spinal cord, ascendng or static involving both halves of the cord and appearing without any history of previous neurological diseases due to traumatic accident, tumor of all kind, encephalitis and of course excluding all possible viral, bacterial and fungal infection. It is mainly characterized by acute motor disorder of both limbs in respect to which spinal segments are affected as well as sensory disorder and dysuria & dyschezia. The exact cause is unknown, however it is recently suggested that immunological factors are highly involved. It has been reported by several reliable sources that it is often accompanied by immunological diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus(SLE). As treatments non steroid anti-inflammatory drugs(NSAIDS) are primarily recommended as to steroids, limited doses are injected only with the proper prescription from the physician. Operative methods are not options as traumatic accidents and tumors are excluded as factors. To enhance muscle strength and prevent articular contracture physical therapy and passive exercise is imperative. The following patient whose chief complaints were mainly about hypoesthesia of Rt. lower limb and stiffness of phalanges of both fingers as well as to weakness of lower extermity. Therefore it has been diagnosed as arthalgia syndrome. In oriental medicine factors such as wind evil heat-evil, dampness-heat evil, cold evil cause the arthalgia syndrome. In this case the patient was diagnosed as dampness-heat evil and herbal medicine Chunglijagam-Tang and Dong-Qi acupuncture was applied to treat bladder disorder.

  • In the design of composite structures, shear connectors such as headed stud, channel, perforated plate, etc, are commonly used to transfer longitudinal shear forces across the steel-concrete interface. Many researches have been conducted to improve the characteristics of different types of shear connector. This paper presents the results of 11 push-out tests performed on the new perforated rib connectors with shearing bars embedded in concrete slab under static loads. The results obtained from these tests are as following : 1) The bearing plate welded on both sides of perforated rib plate improves the stiffness and strength. 2) The capacity of perforated connectors is influenced primarily by the transverse reinforcements and shearing bars.
