  • Purpose. Because of a recent increase in use of soft contact lens at younger ages, in the present study, the correlation between corneal eccentricity and radius of curvature and fitting types of contact lens was investigated. Methods. The study evaluated the fitting status of targets through lens centration, push-up test, dynamic lag test and static lag test of lenses usually worn by 49 men and women (98eyes) in their 20s to 30s who put on soft contact lenses. After evaluation, the subjects were classified into 3 categories by fitting status(steep, aligment and flat). The radius of corneal curvature in the naked eyes was measured by using keratometer. Moreover the corneal eccentricity in the nasal side, temporal side, superior side and inferior side was measured by using the device capable of measuring the corneal eccentricity. Results. The radius of corneal curvature and corneal eccentricity of soft lenses worn by subjects were higher in the order of steep fitting and flat fitting, and the higher average corneal curvature radius and corneal eccentricity is intend to be more steep fitting(p=0.051, p=0.052). The corneal eccentricity showed a tendency to nasal fitting type at the higher eccentricity and temporal fitting type at the smaller eccentricity, statistically significant difference was observed(p<0.05). The study showed there were low correlation that nasal and temporal side at steep fitting, superior side at normal fitting and 4side(nasal, temporal, superior, inferior) at flat fitting, therefore when the corneal eccentricity changed the radius of corneal curvature also changed. The corneal eccentricity and the radius of corneal curvature showed statistically significant difference at 4side and each fitting types(p<0.05). Conclusions. The results of this study, the fitting status, of wearer are based on radius of corneal curvature and corneal eccentricity, and if lens fitting would be done considering that, it seems to be useful in a soft contact lens prescription.

  • Vibration, giving rise to acoustical noise, is an important index of motor performance. The unbalance force due to rotor eccentricity caused by manufacturing imprecision or bearing defects is one possible source of excitation to vibration. With the advent of new high-energy magnetic material together with high precision motor applications, magnetic sources of vibration are becoming more serious. This paper introduces two types of high-speed slotless permanent magnet (PM) machine for electro-mechanical battery and investigates unbalance force due to static eccentricity with finite element method.

  • This paper investigates the influence of spatial varations of accidental mass eccentricities on the torsional response of inelastic multistorey reinforced concrete buildings. It complements recent studies on the elastic response of structural buildings and extends the investigation into the inelastic range, with the aim of providing guidelines for minimising the torsional response of structural buildings. Four spatial mass eccentricity configurations of common nine story buildings, along with their reversed mass eccentricities subjected to the Erzincan-1992 and Kobe-1995 ground motions were investigated, and the results are discussed in the context of the structural response of the no eccentricity models. It is demonstrated that when the initial linear response is practically translational, it is maintained into the inelastic phase of deformation as long as the strength assignment of the lateral resisting bents is based on a planar static analysis where the applied lateral loads simulate the first mode of vibration of the uncoupled structure.

  • This paper presents theoretical investigation on the cross correlation between torsional vibration ($u_{\theta}$) and translation vibration ($u_x$) of asymmetrical structure under white noise excitation. The formula reveals that the cross correlation coefficient (${\rho}$) is a function of uncoupled frequency ratio (${\Omega}={\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$), eccentricity, and damping ratio (${\xi}$). Simulations involving acceleration records from fifteen different earthquakes show correlation coefficients results similar to the theoretical correlation coefficients. The uncoupled frequency ratio is the dominating parameter to ${\rho}$; generally, ${\rho}$ is positive for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ > 1.0, negative for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ < 1.0, and close to zero for ${\omega}_{\theta}/{\omega}_x$ = 1.0. When the eccentricity or damping ratio increases, ${\rho}$ increases moderately for small ${\Omega}$ (< 1.0) only. The relation among $u_x$, $u_{\theta}$ and corner displacement are best presented by ${\rho}$; a simple way to hand-calculate the theoretical dynamic corner displacements from $u_x$, $u_{\theta}$ and ${\rho}$ is proposed as an alternative to dynamic analysis.

  • The purpose of this paper is to investigate the united Electromagnetic characteristics for the effective monitoring on the static air-gap eccentricity (SAGE) of turbo-generator. Different from other studies, this paper not only studies on the unbalanced magnetic pull (UMP) and the vibration characteristics of the stator and the rotor, but also investigates the harmonic features of the magnetic flux density and the circulating current inside the parallel branches (CCPB). The theoretical calculation, together with the finite-element-method (FEM) simulation and the experiment verification, is taken for a SDF-9 type non-salient generator. It is shown that, when SAGE occurs, apparent double-frequency UMP and vibrations will be produced both on the stator and the rotor, while the CCPB will have an obvious increment at the $1^{st}$ harmonic component. In addition, the amplitude of the magnetic flux density will be of cosine distribution in the circumferential position of the air-gap, while in normal condition it is a constant. Moreover, the pass-band amplitude, together with the $1^{st}$ harmonic of the magnetic flux density, will be enlarged as well. These united electromagnetic characteristics can be used as the diagnosis and monitoring criterion for SAGE.

  • The floating ring seal which is used in the high pressure turbo pump is frequently used in the oxidizer pump and the fuel pump of the turbo pump of the liquid propulsion rocket, because it is able to minimize clearance to decrease the leakage flow rate. But, the floating ring seal has a tendency to increase instability in decreasing eccentricity ratio. To complement this weakness, it is devised bump floating ring seal which is inserted bump in the outer surface. It has various experiment results. But the theoretical study of the bump floating ring seal didn't investigated yet. In this paper, we analyse about static characteristics of bump floating ring seal, compared previous experimental results. To analyze the characteristic of bump floating ring seal, we coupled perturbation method of floating ring seal and FEM of bump foil.

  • This paper presents an experimental study on the behavior of concrete-encased composite columns with multiseparate steel sections subjected to axial and eccentric loads. Six 1/4-scaled concrete-encased composite columns were tested under static loads. The specimens were identical in geometric dimensions and configurations, and the parameter of this experiment was the eccentricity ratio of the applied load. Each two of the specimens were loaded with 0, 10%, and 15% eccentricity ratios. The capacity, deformation pattern, and failure mode of the specimens were carefully examined. Test results indicate that full composite action between the concrete and the steel sections can be realized even though the steel sections do not connect with one another. The concrete-encased composite columns can develop stable behavior and sufficient deformation capacity by providing enough transverse reinforcing bars. Capacities of the specimens were evaluated based on both the Plain Section Assumption (PSA) method and the superimposition method. Results show that U.S. and Chinese codes can be accurate and safe in terms of bending capacities. Test results also indicate that the ACI 318 and Mirza methods give the best predictions on the flexural stiffness of this kind of composite columns.

  • The prediction of the actual ultimate capacity of confined concrete columns requires partial confinement utilization under eccentric loading. This is attributed to the reduction in compression zone compared to columns under pure axial compression. Modern codes and standards are introducing the need to perform extreme event analysis under static loads. There has been a number of studies that focused on the analysis and testing of concentric columns. On the other hand, the augmentation of compressive strength due to partial confinement has not been treated before. The higher eccentricity causes smaller confined concrete region in compression yielding smaller increase in strength of concrete. Accordingly, the ultimate eccentric confined strength is gradually reduced from the fully confined value $f_{cc}$ (at zero eccentricity) to the unconfined value $f^{\prime}_c$ (at infinite eccentricity) as a function of the ratio of compression area to total area of each eccentricity. This approach is used to implement an adaptive Mander model for analyzing eccentrically loaded columns. Generalization of the 3D moment of area approach is implemented based on proportional loading, fiber model and the secant stiffness approach, in an incremental-iterative numerical procedure to achieve the equilibrium path of $P-{\varepsilon}$ and $M-{\varphi}$ response up to failure. This numerical analysis is adapted to assess the confining effect in rectangular columns confined with conventional lateral steel. This analysis is validated against experimental data found in the literature showing good correlation to the partial confinement model while rendering the full confinement treatment unsafe.

  • In this study, a static and dynamic characteristics analysis system for machine tool spindle systems with 3 lobe sliding bearing is developed based on Timoshenko theory, finite element method and windows programming techniques. And the characteristics value of 3 lobe sliding bearing such as eccentricity ratio, attitude angle, friction coefficient , stiffness coefficients, damping coefficients and so on, are determined by using the thermal equilibrium conditions of spindle systems. Since the developed system has various analysis modules related to static deformation analysis, modal analysis, frequency responses analysis and so on, it can be utilized to perform systematically the design an devaluation process of spindle systems with 3 lobe sliding bearing under windows GUI environment.

  • In this study, a series of experiments and analyses are performed to estimate the static characteristics of hydrostatic journal bearing such as load capacity, pressure change in each recess, eccentricity of spindle, etc. The experiments are carried out for a multi-recess type journal bearing with capillary restrictor. The Finite Element Method(FEM) is used for the analyses. The predicted load capacity under the condition of stationary or eccentric ratio of bellow 0.2 of the spindle shows excellent agreement with the measured. But, with an increase of the eccentric ratio when the spindle is rotating, the predicted load capacity is largely estimated than the measured. It seems that the difference is mainly caused among others from the fact that the effect of oil-viscosity variation due to the temperature change in the bearing is not introduced into the analyses. The analysis method proposed to estimate the static characteristics of hydrostatic journal bearing is considered to be very reliable since the predicted results are overall in good agreement with the measured.
