  • We investigated an irrational constant e and compared its computational methods using spreadsheet. Such methods are based on classical definition, infinite series, continued fraction, infinite product exponential function and accelerated classical method. This kind of work is focused on experimental mathematics using computers in math class. This approach will be helpful for mathematics teachers to teach constant e in their classroom.

  • An hourly simulation model of a solar LiBr-water absorption cooling and heating system (for brevity, solar absorption system) is presented, based on SuperCalc spreadsheet computational procedures. This paper demonstrates the value of using spreadsheet simulation techniques by examining the thermal performances of a solar absorption system. The hourly heating and cooling coil loads for a typical office building in Tucson, Arizona are modeled and calculated using ASHRAE methods. The details of the algorithms for the components and control schemes are presented. Two case studies are also presented using real system parameters.

  • In mathematical modeling activity modeling process is usually an iterative process. When model can not be solved, the model needs to be simplified by treating some variables as constants, or by ignoring some variables. On the other hand, when the results from the model are not precise enough, the model needs to be refined by considering additional conditions. In this study we investigate the role of spreadsheet model in model refinement and modeling process. In detail, we observed that by using spreadsheet model students can solve model which can not be solved in paper-pencil environment. And so they need not go back to model simplification process but continue model refinement. By transforming mathematical model to spreadsheet model, the students can predict or explain the real word situations directly without passing the mathematical conclusions step in modeling process.

  • The use of spreadsheet packages for solving noise control problems has been cited by several authors, eg Saha[1] and Thornton[2]. The effectiveness of using spreadsheet packages compared with the traditional computer programs written in high level languages was demonstrated when applied to relatively simple problems, such as the selection of hearing protectors or the prediction of noise equation which includes logarithmic additions at most represents the physics of the problem. The simplicity of the governing equation together with the requirement to handle a vast amount of data are considered to be the major reasons for noise control engineers to use spreadsheet packages. Although shipboard noise prediction seems to be very complicated, the calculation procedure itself is, in essence, identical especially true for prediction methods based on empirical formulae[3,4], ie the procedure that consists of the three basic elements, ie source, path and receiver. This paper discusses the application of spreadsheet package LOTUS 1-2-3 to shipboard noise prediction problems. A utility program of the package is written using macro functions and is shown to be especially useful for noise control engineers who are unfamiliar with spreadsheet packages. In addition, a new type of empirical formula, to estimate structureborne noise transmission loss, is proposed.

  • In MMORPG development process, spreadsheet based data management has advantages in the handling of functions and analysis of large data set. But it has limitations in inserting, deleting, searching and relational management of that. In this paper, we proposed the spreadsheet based tool model for large data set for MMORPG development. Our system can reduce the risk of data management failure in MMORPG development process and improve the efficiency of data handling in the large-scale team.

  • For information processing tasks, it is an important cognitive skill to manipulate and store information, which is known as information intake. One of the tasks which greatly involve this skill would be a spreadsheet calculation task. In this study, a spreadsheet calculation task is analyzed by the cognitive task analysis based on the cognitive factors having been usef for a model of human information processing. By the results of the cognitive task analysis, the spreadsheet calculation tasks to be used in the experiments are designed and the testbattery of cognitive abilities assessment (CCAB ; complex cognitive asssessment battery) are selected. Then, the features of cognitive demands and a human performance model of the spreadsheet calculation task are suggested by means of correlation analysis, principal component factor analysis, and regression analysis of the results of the experiments on task performances and the assessment of cognitive abilities. Also, the application of the results of the study to job placement and further research issues are described.

  • The spreadsheet Microsoft Excel is the most widely used mathematical tool in today's workplace. Moreover, it is also an outstanding means for developing a surprisingly wide range of creative and innovative educational uses within such areas as mathematical modeling, visualization, and instruction. The spreadsheet's format provides us with a tool that closely parallels the way in which we naturally carry out problem solving, while the spreadsheet creation process itself illuminates the underlying mathematical concepts. In addition, the spreadsheet's visual layout allows us to introduce a broad variety of challenging and interesting topics, and to design creative demonstrations through eye-catching animated graphics. The material presented comes from actual classroom mathematics teaching experience in both industrially advanced and developing nations. A series of highly visual interactive illustrations from mathematics, the natural and social sciences, computing, engineering, and the arts provide a number of usable examples. The material discussed is applicable at diverse levels, ranging from schools and universities through adult education and in-service teacher development programs.

  • In this article we studied the role of spreadsheet in teaching function and modeling activity by some examples and students' activity performed by the six 10th graders. We especially focused the role of spreadsheet in understanding of various kinds of functions and the families of functions, and in the explanation of the given modeling problem situations. The functions of automatic copy, graphic and the cell reference of spreadsheet can be used to make students observe the causes and effects of changes of the various kind of mathematical representations of functions such as algebraic formulas, tables and graphs. Especially those functions give students a chance to identify family of functions by changing the parameters and this may lead them to the discovery of mathematical facts. In modeling activities they play a key role in the stages of the analysis of the model, explanation of the results of model and conjecture of the real world situations. As well as they make students find the rules underlying in the real world by making spreadsheet as simulation environments, which are almost impossible to make in paper and pencil environments, and give them a chance to justify their findings using mathematics.

  • The conventional factor of safety as used in geotechnical engineering does not reflect the degree of uncertainty of the relevant parameters. Then in the geotechnical engineering, there have been efforts to reflect the uncertainties of the geotechnical properties through probabilistic analysis. In this study, a practical method for calculation the second moment reliability index using the optimization tool of a spreadsheet software is introduced. And this methodology was proposed by Low, B. K.(1996). The method is based on the perspective of an ellipsoid that just touches the failure surface in the original space of the variables. The method is applied to vertical drains(PVD) and compared with th result of Monte Carlo Simulation method.

  • Despite many numbers of studies in Technology Acceptance Model(TAM), the social influence construct has not been recognized, nor handled clearly. This study includes the social influence construct in TAM and tests the robustness of the model for different information systems contexts: office automation(spreadsheet) and Internet(WWW) usage. Study findings include that 1) social influence has a direct impact on the usage of spreadsheet, but not on Internet(WWW) usage, and 2) social influence has a stronger indirect impact on IS use through perceived ease of use than through perceived usefulness(for both Internet and spreadsheet).
