  • In this study, free vibration analysis of FG porous spherical cap reinforced by graphene platelets resting on Winkler-type elastic foundation has been surveyed for the first time. Three different types of porosity patterns are considered for the spherical cap whose two types of porosity patterns in the metal matrix are symmetric and the other one is uniform. Besides, five GPL patterns are assumed for dispersing of GPLs in the metal matrix. Tsai-Halpin and extended rule of the mixture are used to determine the Young modulus and mass density of the shell, respectively. Employing 3D FEM elasticity in conjunction with Hamilton's Principle, the governing motion equations of the structure are obtained and solved. The impact of various parameters including porosity coefficient, various porosity distributions in conjunction with different GPL patterns, the weight fraction of graphene Nano fillers, polar angles and stiffness coefficient of elastic foundation on natural frequencies of FG porous spherical cap reinforced by GPLs have been reported for the first time.

  • The receptance method was applied for the analysis of a cylindrical shell with a spherical cap attached at an arbitrary axial position of the shell. The boundary condition of the shell considered here was clamped-free condition. Before the analysis of the shell/spherical cap combined structure, natural frequencies of the cap and the shell were calculated separately and then they were used in the calculation of the frequencies of the combined structure by the receptance method. • Thermospheric neutral winds and temperatures have been collected from the ground-based Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) at Thule Air Base ($76.5^{\circ}N{\;}69.0^{\circ}W$), Greenland since 1985. The thermospheric observations are obtained by determining the Doppler characteristics f the [OI] 6300 ${\AA}$ emissions of atomic oxygen. The FPI operates routinely during the winter season, with a limitation in the observation by the existence of clouds. For this study, data acquired from 1985 to 1991 were analyzed. The neutral wind measurements from these long-term measurements are used to investigate the influence of solar cycle variation on the high-latitude thermospheric dynamics. These data provide experimental results of the geomagnetic polar cap are also compared with the predictions of two semiempirical models : the vector spherical harmonics (VSH) model of Killeen et al. (1987) and the horizontal wind model (HWM) of Hedin et al. (1991). The experimental results show a good positive correlation between solar activity and thermospheric wind speed over the geomagnetic polar cap. The calculated correlation coefficient indicates that an increase of 100 in F10.7 index corresponds to an increase in wind speed of about 100 m/s. The model predictions reveal similar trends of wind speed variation as a function of solar activity, with the VSH and HWM models tending to overestimate and underestimate the wind speed, respectively.

  • Recently, in an effort to reduce the energy efficiency design index (EEDI), studies on energy saving devices (ESDs) have been conducted. In this study, we designed a post-device suitable for a KRISO container ship (KCS) using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). In order to increase the efficiency of the post-device, a twisted rudder was used, which has a proven performance (showing a 1.34% reduction in DHP compared to the bare hull at 24 knots) in previous research at Pusan National University. In addition, an increase in efficiency was expected by the use of a rudder bulb, including the discontinuous section of the twisted rudder and a divergent propeller cap to prevent the contraction of the wake. The optimization criterion was the case where the delivery power was the least compared with the bare hull. We analyzed the cause of the efficiency increase through an analysis of the self-propulsion factor. The case study for optimization was divided into 4 types (1. clearance of the bulb and cap, 2. shape of the bulb, 3. size of the bulb and cap, and 4. asymmetric bulb). Finally, with a clearance of 50 mm from the ship, a spherical bulb with the cap having an angle of $5^{\circ}$, and an asymmetric rudder bulb with a bulb diameter of 1.2HH/1.4H (horizontal/vertical) showed a 2.05% reduction in DHP compared to the bare hull at 24 knots. We will fabricate a post-device that will be optimized in the future and verify the performance of the post-device through model tests.

  • This is a boundary integral formulation for elastic shallow shell structures subjected to both membrane and bending loads. Fundamental solutions for shell actions are determined from the plate solutions and, finally the corresponding kernel functions for shell BIEs can be constructed. It is illustrated by solving an example of uniform load of spherical cap.

  • The data, methodology, and the resulting accurate gravimetric geoid model for the Korean Peninsula (latitude from 32˚ N to 40˚ N and longitude from 124˚ E to 131˚ E) are presented in this study. The types of used data were a high degree geopotential model (the EGM96 spherical harmonic coefficient set), a set of 12,615 land gravity observations, 1,056,075 shipborne gravity observations, and KMS2002 gravity anomalies from satellite altimetry. The remove-restore technique was successfully applied to combining the above mentioned data sets using up to degree and order 112 of the EGM96 coefficient. The residual geoid was calculated with residual Free-Air anomaly values using the spherical Stokes' formula with a 37-km integration cap radius. The geoid model was referred to WGS84 geodetic system and was tested using a set of GPS/levelling geoid undulations. The absolute accuracy is 0.132 m and some improvement compared to the PNU95 geoid model was found.

  • This study developed and evaluated the motion control of 3D printed fingers applied to smart gloves. Four motions were programmed by assembling the module using the Arduino program: cylindrical grasping, spherical grasping, tip-to-tip pinch gripping, and three-jaw pinch gripping. Cap and re-entrant (RE) strip types were designed to model the finger. Two types of modeling were printed using filaments of thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) and thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU). The prepared samples were evaluated using three types of pens for cylidrical grasping, three types of balls for spherical grasping, and two types of cards for tip-to-tip pinch gripping and three-jaw pinch gripping. The motion control of fingers was connected using five servo motors to the number of each control board. Cylindrical and spherical grasping were moved by controlling the fingers at 180° and 150°, respectively. Pinch gripping was controlled using a tip-to-tip pinch motion controlled by the thumb at 30° and index-middle at 0° besides a three-jaw pinch motion controlled by the thumb-index finger-middle at 30°, 0°, and 0°, respectively. As a result of the functional evaluation, the TPE of 3D-printed fingers was more flexible than those of TPU. RE strip type of 3D-printed fingers was more suitable for the motion control of fingers than the 3D-printed finger.
