Using a spatial compound imaging technique in a medical ultrasound imaging system, the average speed of sound in a medium of interest is measured, and imaging of its distribution is implemented. When the brightness reaches the highest level in an ultrasonic image obtained as the speed of sound used in focusing is varied, it turns out that the focusing has been accomplished satisfactorily and that the speed of sound which has been adopted becomes the sought-after average speed of sound. Because spatial compound imaging provides many different views of the same object, the adverse effect of erroneous speed-of-sound estimation tends to be more severe in compound imaging than in plain B-mode imaging. Thus, in compound imaging, the average speed of sound even in the case of speckled images can be accurately estimated by observing the brightness change due to different speeds of sound employed. Using this new method that offers spatial diversity, we can construct an image of the speed of sound distribution in a phantom embedded with a 10-mm diameter plastic cylinder whose speed of sound is different from that of the background. The speed of sound in the cylinder is found to be different from that of the surrounding medium.
The impact of sound speed variability in the sea is the very important on acoustic propagation for the underwater acoustic systems. Understanding of the temporal and spatial variability of ocean sound speed in the sea around the Ieodo were obtained using oceanographic data (temperature, salinity). from the Korea Oceanographic Data Center, collected by season for 17 years. The vertical distributions of sound speed are mainly related to seasonal variations and various current such as Chinese coastal water, Yellow Sea Cold Water (YSCW), Kuroshio source water. The standard deviations show that great variations of sound speed exist in the upper layer and observation station between 16 and 18. In order to quantitatively explain the reason for sound speed variations, Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) analysis was performed on sound speed data at the Line 316 covering 68 cruises between 2002 and 2018. Three main modes of EOFs respectively revealed 55, 29, and 5% the total variance of sound speed. The first mode of the EOFs was associated with influence of surface heating. The second EOFs pattern shows that contributions of YSCW and surface heating. The first and second modes had seasonal and inter-annul variations.
In this study, an acoustical characteristics of sound proof panel for high speed train was performed. A sound absorption coefficient and transmission loss of sound proof panels for high speed train were tested in reverberation chambers and compared those of ordinary sound proof panel. The effect of noise barrier was simulated by using ray noise program with measured sound absorption coefficient for high speed train case and for ordinary case.
This study is to analyze the influence of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC) on the variation of sound speed in the southern part of the East Sea. Sound speed is calculated by method of Chen and Millero (1977:, based on the CTD data measured in June of 1996. Sound speed in the central part of the TWC is about $45ms^{-1}$ more fast than that in the other regions without the TWC. Sound speed minimum layer (SML) in the TWC region exists between loom and 341 m, while it exists between 260m and 290m in the non-TWC region. SML distributes along the path of TWC over continental shelf in the coastal waters of Japan.

The speed of sound, transmission coefficient, and attenuation are measured around the center frequency 1 and 2 MHz in solid materials such as bone, sediment, rubber, and Lucite materials. Common and different characteristics of such materials in the sound speed, transmission coefficient, and attenuation are discussed. Ambiguities in estimating such acoustic characteristics we also addressed. Ultrasonic properties of the first and second kind waves are clarified for different materials. Discussions are concentrated on classes of sound speed, broadband ultrasonic attenuation (BUA), and correlations of sound speed and BUA with apparent density. New correlations of inverse sound speed square and BUA with apparent density are suggested.
In the conventional linear elasticity, sound speed is determined by only elastic modulus and density of the medium. In actual, however, sound speed depends on the stress and this dependency becomes nonlinear as the stress increases. These phenomena can be introducing nonlinear elastic modulus. In this paper, relationships between nonlinear elastic modulus up to 4th order and the internal status of materials are discussed through computer simulations and experiments. For the measurement of sound speed, a new type of measurement system using ultrasonic wave is proposed on the basis of ultrasonic pulse echo method which has been generally used in nondestructive ultrasonic test equipment. In order to confirm the stress dependency of sound speed, several experiments are carried out for alumina specimen.
The bubble size distribution is critical information to understand sound propagation and ambient noise in the ocean. To estimate the bubble size distribution in a bubbly water, the sound attenuation has been only in the conventional acoustic bubble sizing method without considering the sound speed variation. However, the effect of the sound speed variation in bubbly water cannot be neglected because of its compressibility variation. The sound attenuation is also affected by the sound speed variation. In this paper, a coherent acoustic bubble sizing inverse technique is introduced as a new bubble sizing technique with considering sound speed variation as well as the sound attenuation. This coherent sizing method is theoretically verified with the bubble distribution functions of single-size, Gaussian, and power-law functions. Its numerical test results with the coherent acoustic bubble sizing method show good agreement with the given bubble distributions.
Complaints against high-speed train interior noise have been increasing as a number of high-speed train passenger grows bigger. It is very difficult to analyze characteristics of high-speed train interior noise using sound pressure level only. It is requested to consider how the public response change for each high-speed train interior noise. This study presents evaluation of the sound quality for interior noise of KTX-II using Zwicker parameters. Characteristic of loudness and sharpness is different between noise samples depending on operation condition. The noise sample that recorded when the high-speed train passed through tunnel section is more louder and sharper.
The sound wave in the sea propagates under the effect of water depth, sound speed structure, sea surface roughness, bottom roughness, and acoustic properties of bottom sediment. In shallow water, the bottom sediments are distributed very variously with place and the sound speed structure varying with time and space. In order to investigate the seasonal propagation characteristics of low-frequency sound wave in the Yellow Sea, propagation experiments were conducted along a track in the middle part of the Yellow Sea in spring, summer, and autumn. In this paper we consider seasonal variations of the sound speed profile and propagation loss based on the measurement results. Also we quantitatively investigate variation of bottom loss by dividing the propagation loss into three components: spreading loss, absorption loss, and bottom loss. As a result, the propagation losses measured in summer were larger than the losses in spring and autumn, and the propagation losses measured in autumn were smaller than the losses in spring. The spreading loss and the absorption loss did not show seasonal variations, but the bottom loss showed seasonal variations. So it was thought that the seasonal variation of the propagation loss was due to the seasonal change of the bottom loss and the seasonal variation of the bottom loss was due to the change of the sound speed profile by season.
