  • We present a time-frequency analysis algorithm based on the multitaper method and the state-space frameworks. In general, time-frequency representations have a trade-off between the time duration and the spectral bandwidth by the uncertainty principle. To optimize the trade-off problems, the short-time Fourier transform and wavelet based algorithms have been developed. Alternatively, the authors proposed the state-space frameworks based on the multitaper method in the previous work. In this paper, we develop a real-time algorithm to estimate variances and spectrum using the state-space framework. We test our algorithm in spectral analysis of simulated data.

  • In this study, fundamental research is conducted for the generation technique and analysis of multi-directional irregular waves in the Deep Ocean Engineering Basin (DOEB). A three-dimensional boundary element method-based numerical tank is implemented to perform wave generation simulations, and directional spectrum estimation is carried out using the results of simulations. The wave generation technique of the Snake type wave maker, generating multi-directional irregular waves, is implemented using the Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and Inverse Fast Fourier Transform (IFFT) algorithms. The wave generation technique is validated by comparing the wave spectrum from simulations and experiments. A Maximum Likelihood Method (MLM) based estimation code is developed for estimating the directional wave spectra. The multi-directional irregular waves are tested in the DOEB and the numerical tank, and directional wave spectra obtained from two methodologies are estimated and compared. A correction procedure for the directional distribution of multi-directional waves is established, and the possibility of correcting the directional spreading function using the numerical tank is validated.

  • An initial carrier frequency offset estimation algorithm is proposed for a multi-user frequency bowing orthogonal frequency division modulation-frequency division multiple access (FH-OFDMA) system with a single preamble symbol. To mitigate the effect of the frequency offset, every mobile station needs to accurately and rapidly acquire synchronization. The proposed algorithm uses only one preamble symbol in which two kinds of subcarriers are designed for coarse and fine frequency offset estimation. The non-data aided estimation using the energy spectrum is exploited for fine offset estimation, and maximum likelihood estimation using correlation for coarse offset estimation. By combining the two estimation results, an accurate frequency offset can be estimated with a single symbol. Through simulations, the performance of the proposed algorithm is evaluated by comparing estimation error variance with a conventional method.

  • Herein, we estimate the direction of arrival (DOA) of non-Gaussian signals for nested arrays (NAs) by implementing the fourth-order difference co-array (FODC) and successive methods. In particular, considering the property of the fourth-order cumulant (FOC), we first construct the FODC of the NA, which can obtain O(N4) virtual elements using N physical sensors, whereas conventional FOC methods can only obtain O(N2) virtual elements. In addition, the closed-form expression of FODC is presented to verify the enhanced degrees of freedom (DOFs). Subsequently, we exploit the vectorized FOC (VFOC) matrix to match the FODC of the NA. Notably, the VFOC matrix is a single snapshot vector, and the initial DOA estimates can be obtained via the discrete Fourier transform method under the underdetermined correlation matrix condition, which utilizes the complete DOFs of the FODC. Finally, fine estimates are obtained through the spatial smoothing-Capon method with partial spectrum searching. Numerical simulation verifies the effectiveness and superiority of the proposed method.

  • In this paper, a generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) is proposed for cyclostationary multi-antenna spectrum sensing in cognitive radio systems, which takes into account the cyclic autocorrelations obtained from all the receiver antennas and the cyclic cross-correlations obtained from all pairs of receiver antennas. The proposed GLRT employs a different hypotheses problem formulation and a different asymptotic covariance estimation method, which are proved to be more suitable for multi-antenna systems than those employed by the $Dandawat{\acute{e}}$-Giannakis algorithm. Moreover, we derive the asymptotic distributions of the proposed test statistics, and prove the constant false alarm rate property of the proposed algorithm. Extensive simulations are conducted, showing that the proposed GLRT can achieve better detection performance than the $Dandawat{\acute{e}}$-Giannakis algorithm and its extension for multi-antenna cases.

  • To achieve accurate localization information, complex algorithms that have high computational complexity are usually implemented. In addition, many of these algorithms have been developed to overcome several limitations, e.g., obstruction interference in multi-path and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) environments. However, localization systems those have complex design experience latency when operating multiple mobile nodes occupying various channels and try to compensate for inaccurate distance values. To operate multiple mobile nodes concurrently, we propose a localization system with both low complexity and high accuracy and that is based on a chirp spread spectrum (CSS) radio. The proposed localization system is composed of accurate ranging values that are analyzed by simple linear regression that utilizes a Big-$O(n^2)$ of only a few data points and an algorithm with a self-calibration feature. The performance of the proposed localization system is verified by means of actual experiments. The results show a mean error of about 1 m and multiple mobile node operation in a $100{\times}35m^2$ environment under NLOS condition.

  • In order to check the influence of the randomness in yield strengths on the energy dissipation capacity of steel structures, behaviour factors applied for the "Response Spectrum Method" and their distributions are determined in this study with 7 steel framed models. Also 4 artificial accelerograms simulated with a given spectrum are applied to check the influence of the randomness in seismic action on the behviour factor. To execute numerous time-step calculations for the investigation a time-step analysis method is developed and applied after the reliability estimation to determine the action effects.

  • This paper focuses on analyzing the effects of primary user (PU) signal arrival on the local spectrum sensing performance. The probability for signal arrival at a sample in the sensing time is uniformly distributed in the sensing time. We first analyze the main factor that causes the degradation in the detection results in the conventional energy detection (CED) under the uniformly random arrival of the PU-signal. Thus we propose an approach in order to enhance the detection performance, in which an estimator which detects the arrival of the PU signal cooperates with a composite energy detection. The mathematical analysis and numerical simulation has validated the outperformance of the proposed approach compared to the CED.

  • This study proposed a new algorithm to assess autonomic function activity using Time-Frequency Representation(TFR). TFR is a way of describing the time-valiant energy of a signal. A discrete Wigner representation that is capable of filtering out any cross terms occuring in the Wigner-Ville Distribution(WVD) is used for time-variant energy distribution of heart rate variability(HRV) signals. And the marginal condition are evaluated to estimate power spectrum of HRV signals. The proposed algorithm showed that estimated power spectrum of HRV signals well describe the autonomic nerve system function and also showed the dynamics of autonomic nervous system response.

  • This study is concerned with the estimation of fluctuation wind velocity spectrum and turbulence characteristics in the major cities reflecting the recent meteorological with typhoon wind velocity about 2003 (Maemi) 2010 (Kompasu) 2012 (Tembin). The purpose of this paper is to present spectral analysis for longitudinal component fluctuating velocity. In the processes of analysis, the longitudinal velocity spectrums are compared widely used spectrum models with horizontal wind velocity observations data obtained at Korea Meteorological Adminstration (KMA) and properties of the atmospheric air for typhoon fluctuating wind data are estimated to parameters with turbulency intensity, shear velocity and roughness length.
