  • H.264 adopts new coding tools such as intra-prediction, loop filter, etc. The adoption of these tools enables an H.264-coded bitstream to have more information compared with previous standards. In this paper we proposed an effective spatial error concealment method for H.264. Among the information included in an H.264-coded bitstream, we use intra-mode for recovering a damaged block. This is because prediction direction in intra-mode is highly correlated to the edge direction of a lost macroblock. We first estimate the edge direction using intra-modes of blocks adjacent to a lost macroblock, and classify the area in a damaged macroblock into the edge and the flat area. And then our method recovers pixel values in the edge area using edge-directed interpolation, and recovers pixel values in the flat area using weighted interpolation. Simulation results show the proposed method yields better video quality than conventional approaches by 0.35 to 5.48 dB.

  • This paper deals with the method of self-equilibrium stress mode analysis of cable dome structures. From the point of view of analysis, cable dome structure is a kind of unstable truss structure which is stabilized by means of introduction of prestressing. The prestress must be introduced according to a specific proportion among different structural member and it is determined by an analysis called self-equilibrium stress mode analysis. The mathematical equation involved in the self-equilibrium stress mode analysis is a system of linear equations which can be solved numerically by adopting the concept of Moore-Penrose generalized inverse. The calculation of the generalized inverse is carried out by rank factorization method. This method involves a parameter called epsilon which plays a critical role in self-equilibrium stress mode analysis. It is thus of interest to investigate the range of epsilon which produces consistent solution during the analysis of self-equilibrium stress mode.

  • In this paper, an low power symbol detector is proposed for MIMO communication system with two transmit and two receive antennas. The proposed symbol detector can support both the spatial multiplexing (SM) mode and spatial diversity (SD) mode for MIMO transmission technique, and shows the optimal maximum likelihood (ML) performance. Also, by sharing the hardware block and using the dedicated clock MIMO modes, the power of the proposed architecture is dramatically decreased. The proposed symbol detector was designed in hardware description language (HDL) and synthesized to logic gates using a $0.13-{\mu}m$ CMOS standard cell library. The power consumption was estimated by using Synopsys Power CompilerTM, which is reduced by maximum 85%, compared with the conventional architecture.

  • This paper presents a finite element formulation for the three-dimensional hierarchical solid element using Integrals of Legendre polynomials. The proposed hexahedral solid element is composed of four different modes including vertex, edge, face, and internal mode, respectively. The eigenvalue and patch test have been carried out to confirm the zero-energy mode and constant strain condition. In addition to these, a posteriori error estimation has been studied for the p-adaptive finite element analysis that is based on a smoothing technique to compute a post-processed solution from the finite element solution. The uniform p-refinement and non-uniform p-refinement are compared in terms of convergence rate as the number of degree of freedom is increased. The simple cantilever beam is tested to show the performance of the proposed solid element.

  • This study analyzes the changes in commuter's mode choice between 2002 and 2006 according to the implement of the integrated public transit system in Seoul metropolitan city. Especially this study focuses on differential changes in a transit modal choice among socioeconomic status, trip purpose and spatial characteristics of origin and destination. The probability of public transit use against automobile is modeled as a function of socioeconomic variables, spatial characteristics of origin and destination and the utility of the commuter's mode. The results from conditional logit model analyses suggest that people with lower income show the larger changes in the ratio of public transit choice between 2002-06. Also both higher density, more accessible to public transit and more diverse land uses in residence zone and in work place generally increase the ratio of public transit choice between 2002-06. Car and subway have the most strong alternative relation in commuter's mode choice. The findings give an important implication that the integrated public transit system has differential impacts on commuter's mode choice in Seoul.

  • Direct numerical simulations of flow over a circular cylinder are performed at two different Reynolds numbers (Re=220 and 300) that correspond to three-dimensional instabilities of mode A and mode B, respectively, to investigate the characteristics of drag and lift at these Reynolds numbers. The drag and lift coefficients are measured locally along the spanwise direction and their characteristics are studied in detail. The variation of total drag in time is large at Re=220, and the total drag becomes minimum when vortex dislocation occurs in the wake. The drag and lift variations in space are also closely associated with the evolution of vortex dislocation at this Reynolds number. At Re=300, vortex dislocation is not found in the wake and temporal variations of drag and lift are much smaller than those at Re=220, but their spatial variations are quite large due to the near-wake secondary vortices existing in the mode B instability.

  • This paper addresses the vibration mode shape measurement technique utilizing a Continuous Scanning Laser Doppler Vibrometer (CSLDV). The continuous scanning capability is added to the conventional discrete Laser Doppler Vibrometer by reflecting the laser beams on the surface of the object using two oscillating mirrors. The bow scanning resulted from the proposed scanning method is eliminated by feedback control. The velocity output signal from the CSLDV is modulated to give the spatial velocity distribution in terms of coefficients which are obtained from the Fast Fourier Transformation of the time dependent velocity signal. Using the Chebyshev series form, the analysis of the vibration mode shape techniques for straight Bine scanning and 2 dimensional scanning are presented and discussed. The performance of the proposed SLDV is presented using the experimental results of the vibration mode shape of a plate

  • This paper presents a theoretical algorithm for constructing the mode shapes of a bridge from the dynamic responses of a test vehicle moving over the bridge. In comparison with those approaches that utilize a limited number of sensors deployed on the bridge, the present approach can offer much more spatial information, as well as higher resolution in mode shapes, since the test vehicle can receive the vibration characteristics of each point during its passage on the bridge. Basically only one or few sensors are required to be installed on the test vehicle. Factors that affect the accuracy of the present approach for constructing the bridge mode shapes are studied, including the vehicle speed, random traffic, and road surface roughness. Through numerical simulations, the present approach is verified to be feasible under the condition of constant and low vehicle speeds.

  • This paper is concerned with the numerical calculation of mixed-mode stress intensity factors (SIFs) of 2-D isotropic functionally graded materials (FGMs) by the natural element method (more exactly, Petrov-Galerkin NEM). The spatial variation of elastic modulus in non-homogeneous FGMs is reflected into the modified interaction integral ${\tilde{M}}^{(1,2)}$. The local NEM grid near the crack tip is refined, and the directly approximated strain and stress fields by PG-NEM are enhanced and smoothened by the patch recovery technique. Two numerical examples with the exponentially varying elastic modulus are taken to illustrate the proposed method. The mixed-mode SIFs are parametrically computed with respect to the exponent index in the elastic modulus and external loading and the crack angle and compared with the other reported results. It has been justified from the numerical results that the present method successfully and accurately calculates the mixed-mode stress intensity factors of 2-D non-homogeneous functionally graded materials.
