  • Recently, sparse coding has achieved remarkable success in image representation tasks. In practice, the performance of clustering can be significantly improved if limited label information is incorporated into sparse coding. To this end, in this paper, a novel semi-supervised algorithm, called constrained sparse concept coding (CSCC), is proposed for image representation. CSCC considers limited label information into graph embedding as additional hard constraints, and hence obtains embedding results that are consistent with label information and manifold structure information of the original data. Therefore, CSCC can provide a sparse representation which explicitly utilizes the prior knowledge of the data to improve the discriminative power in clustering. Besides, a kernelized version of our proposed CSCC, namely kernel constrained sparse concept coding (KCSCC), is developed to deal with nonlinear data, which leads to more effective clustering performance. The experimental evaluations on the MNIST, PIE and Yale image sets show the effectiveness of our proposed algorithms.

  • In order to meet the requirements of background change, illumination variation, moving shadow interference and high accuracy in object detection of moving camera, and strive for real-time and high efficiency, this paper presents an object detection algorithm based on sparse approximation recursion and sparse coding migration in subspace. First, low-rank sparse decomposition is used to reduce the dimension of the data. Combining with dictionary sparse representation, the computational model is established by the recursive formula of sparse approximation with the video sequences taken as subspace sets. And the moving object is calculated by the background difference method, which effectively reduces the computational complexity and running time. According to the idea of sparse coding migration, the above operations are carried out in the down-sampling space to further reduce the requirements of computational complexity and memory storage, and this will be adapt to multi-scale target objects and overcome the impact of large anomaly areas. Finally, experiments are carried out on VDAO datasets containing 59 sets of videos. The experimental results show that the algorithm can detect moving object effectively in the moving camera with uniform speed, not only in terms of low computational complexity but also in terms of low storage requirements, so that our proposed algorithm is suitable for detection systems with high real-time requirements.

  • A method is proposed to detect structural damages in the presence of damping using noisy data. This method uses Frequency Response Function (FRF) and Mode-Shapes as the input parameters for a system of Couple Sparse Coding (CSC) to study the healthy state of the structure. To obtain appropriate patterns of FRF for CSC training, Principal Component Analysis (PCA) technique is adopted to reduce the full-size FRF to overcome over-fitting and convergence problems in machine-learning training. To verify the proposed method, a numerical two-story frame structure is employed. A system of individual CSCs is trained with FRFs and mode-shapes, and then termed ensemble to detect the health condition of the structure. The results demonstrate that the proposed method is accurate in damage identification even in presence of up to 20% noisy data and 5% unconsidered damping ratio. Furthermore, it can be concluded that CSC ensemble is highly efficient to detect the location and the severity of damages in comparison to the individual CSC trained only with FRF data.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach to learning a discriminative model for figure/ground segmentation by incorporating the bag-of-features and conditional random field (CRF) techniques. We advocate the use of image patches instead of superpixels as the basic processing unit. The latter has a homogeneous appearance and adheres to object boundaries, while an image patch often contains more discriminative information (e.g., local image structure) to distinguish its categories. We use pixel-level sparse coding to represent an image patch. With the proposed feature representation, the unary classifier achieves a considerable binary segmentation performance. Further, we integrate unary and pairwise potentials into the CRF model to refine the segmentation results. The pairwise potentials include color and texture potentials with neighborhood interactions, and an edge potential. High segmentation accuracy is demonstrated on three benchmark datasets: the Weizmann horse dataset, the VOC2006 cow dataset, and the MSRC multiclass dataset. Extensive experiments show that the proposed approach performs favorably against the state-of-the-art approaches.

  • A network-coding-based scheme is proposed to improve the energy efficiency of distributed storage systems in WSNs (Wireless Sensor Networks). We mainly focus on two problems: firstly, consideration is given to effective distributed storage technology; secondly, we address how to effectively repair the data in failed storage nodes. For the first problem, we propose a method to obtain a sparse generator matrix to construct network codes, and this sparse generator matrix is proven to be the sparsest. Benefiting from this matrix, the energy consumption required to implement distributed storage is reduced. For the second problem, we designed a network-coding-based iterative repair method, which adequately utilizes the idea of re-encoding at intermediate nodes from network coding theory. Benefiting from the re-encoding, the energy consumption required by data repair is significantly reduced. Moreover, we provide an explicit lower bound of field size required by this scheme, which implies that it can work over a small field and the required computation overhead is very low. The simulation result verifies that the proposed scheme not only reduces the total energy consumption required to implement distributed storage system in WSNs, but also balances energy consumption of the networks.

  • Regression-based image super resolution (SR) methods have shown great advantage in time consumption while maintaining similar or improved quality performance compared to other learning-based methods. In this paper, we propose a novel single image SR method based on hierarchical regression to further improve the quality performance. As an improvement to other regression-based methods, we introduce a hierarchical scheme into the process of learning multiple regressors. First, training samples are grouped into different clusters according to their geometry similarity, which generates the structure layer. Then in each cluster, a compact dictionary can be learned by Sparse Coding (SC) method and the training samples can be further grouped by dictionary atoms to form the detail layer. Last, a series of projection matrixes, which anchored to dictionary atoms, can be learned by linear regression. Experiment results show that hierarchical scheme can lead to regression that is more precise. Our method achieves superior high quality results compared with several state-of-the-art methods.

  • Aiming at the poor compression quality of traditional image compression coding (ICC) algorithm, a multi-description ICC algorithm based on depth learning is put forward in this study. In this study, first an image compression algorithm was designed based on multi-description coding theory. Image compression samples were collected, and the measurement matrix was calculated. Then, it processed the multi-description ICC sample set by using the convolutional self-coding neural system in depth learning. Compressing the wavelet coefficients after coding and synthesizing the multi-description image band sparse matrix obtained the multi-description ICC sequence. Averaging the multi-description image coding data in accordance with the effective single point's position could finally realize the compression coding of multi-description images. According to experimental results, the designed algorithm consumes less time for image compression, and exhibits better image compression quality and better image reconstruction effect.

  • In this paper, a novel spectral-spatial joint sparse representation algorithm for hyperspectral image classification is proposed based on multi-layer superpixels in various scales. Superpixels of various scales can provide complete yet redundant correlated information of the class attribute for test pixels. Therefore, we design a joint sparse model for a test pixel by sampling similar pixels from its corresponding superpixels combinations. Firstly, multi-layer superpixels are extracted on the false color image of the HSI data by principal components analysis model. Secondly, a group of discriminative sampling pixels are exploited as reconstruction matrix of test pixel which can be jointly represented by the structured dictionary and recovered sparse coefficients. Thirdly, the orthogonal matching pursuit strategy is employed for estimating sparse vector for the test pixel. In each iteration, the approximation can be computed from the dictionary and corresponding sparse vector. Finally, the class label of test pixel can be directly determined with minimum reconstruction error between the reconstruction matrix and its approximation. The advantages of this algorithm lie in the development of complete neighborhood and homogeneous pixels to share a common sparsity pattern, and it is able to achieve more flexible joint sparse coding of spectral-spatial information. Experimental results on three real hyperspectral datasets show that the proposed joint sparse model can achieve better performance than a series of excellent sparse classification methods and superpixels-based classification methods.
