  • In the source localization using single dipole model, the influence of the number of electrodes, the position and direction of a single dipole on the relation between S/W ratio and dipole parameter estimation errors is important. Monte Carlo simulation was used to investigate this influence. The forward problem was calculated using three spherical shell model, and dipole parameters were optimized by means of simplex method. As the number of electrodes became large, as the dipole went from midbrain to cortex, and as the direction of dipole changed from radial to tangential, the average and standard deviation of estimation errors became small.

  • In this study, a skewness estimation method (SEM) and kurtosis estimation method (KEM) are introduced to determine the number of inactive cycles in Monte Carlo eigenvalue calculations. The SEM and KEM can determine the number of inactive cycles on the basis that fully converged fission source distributions may follow normal distributions without asymmetry or outliers. Two convergence criteria values and a minimum cycle length for the SEM and KEM were determined from skewness and kurtosis analyses of the AGN-201K benchmark and 1D slab problems. The SEM and KEM were then applied to two OECD/NEA slow convergence benchmark problems to evaluate the performance and reliability of the developed methods. Results confirmed that the SEM and KEM provide appropriate and effective convergence cycles when compared to other methods and fission source density fraction trends. Also, the determined criterion value of 0.5 for both ε1 and ε2 was concluded to be reasonable. The SEM and KEM can be utilized as a new approach for determining the number of inactive cycles and judging whether Monte Carlo tally values are fully converged. In the near future, the methods will be applied to various practical problems to further examine their performance and reliability, and optimization will be performed for the convergence criteria and other parameters as well as for improvement of the methodology for practical usage.

  • We are concerned in the estimation of lifetime distribution of a component having a few observed failure data and we demonstrate that we can use the maximum likelihood estimation utilizing the censored data when the number of components in use is quite large. Weibull distribution is assumed for the lifetime and a simple estimation procedure is introduced. We also propose the method of determining the optimal number of spares required for a specified period without introducing cost functions. The proposed methods are applied to the photon stop and the water-cooled flange which are major components in Pohang Light Source.

  • In this study, one-dimensional gamma ray source positions are estimated using a plastic scintillating optical fiber, two photon counters and via data processing with a machine learning algorithm. A nonlinear regression algorithm is used to construct a machine learning model for the position estimation of radioactive sources. The position estimation results of radioactive sources using machine learning are compared with the theoretical position estimation results based on the same measured data. Various tests at the source positions are conducted to determine the improvement in the accuracy of source position estimation. In addition, an evaluation is performed to compare the change in accuracy when varying the number of training datasets. The proposed one-dimensional gamma ray source position estimation system with plastic scintillating fiber using machine learning algorithm can be used as radioactive leakage scanners at disposal sites.

  • In this paper, a couple of well-known methods for determination of the number of source signals impinging on sersor array in array processing are introduced and compared in terms of estimation accuracy. The one is the procedure issued by Akaike(Akaike's Information Criterion : AIC) and the other one by Schwartz and Rissanen(Minimum Description Length:MDL). This paper demonstrates, through computer simulation, that the AIC is more reliable than the MDL in such troublesome cases as very closely spaced source signlas, very limited number of sensors in the array, finite data sequences and/or low Signal-to-Noise ratio(S/N).

  • In this paper, we introduce a method to improve the accuracy of the length estimation of targets using a radar. The HRRP (High Resolution Range Profile) obtained from a received radar signal represents the one-dimensional scattering characteristics of a target, and peaks of the HRRP means the scattering centers that strongly scatter electromagnetic waves. By using the extracted scattering centers, the downrange length of the target, which is the length in the RLOS (Radar Line of Sight), can be estimated, and the real length of the target should be estimated considering the angle between the target and the RLOS. In order to improve the accuracy of the length estimation, parametric estimation methods, which extract scattering centers more exactly than the method using the HRRP, can be used. The parametric estimation method is applied after the number of scattering centers is determined, and is thus greatly affected by the accuracy of the number of scattering centers. In this paper, in order to improve the accuracy of target length estimation, the number of scattering centers is estimated by using AIC (Akaike Information Criteria), MDL (Minimum Descriptive Length), and GLE (Gerschgorin Likelihood Estimators), which are the source number estimation methods based on information theoretic criteria. Using the ESPRIT algorithm as a parameter estimation method, a length estimation simulation was performed for simple target CAD models, and the GLE method represented excellent performance in estimating the number of scattering centers and estimating the target length.

  • Sound source localization method based on the time delay of arrival(TDOA) is applied to many research fields such as a robot auditory system, teleconferencing and so on. When multi-microphones are utilized to localize the source in 3 dimensional space, the conventional localization methods based on TDOA decide the actual source position using the TDOAs from all microphone arrays and the detection measure, which represents the errors between the actual source position and the estimated ones. Performance of these methods usually depends on the number of microphones because it determines the resolution of an estimated position. In this paper, we proposed the localization method using spatially mapped GCC functions. The proposed method does not use just TDOA for localization such as previous ones but it uses spatially mapped GCC functions which is the cross correlation function mapped by an appropriate mapping function over the spatial coordinate. A number of the spatially mapped GCC functions are summed to a single function over the global coordinate and then the actual source position is determined based on the summed GCC function. Performance of the proposed method for the noise effect and estimation resolution is verified with the real environmental experiment. The mean value of estimation error of the proposed method is much smaller than the one based on the conventional ones and the percentage of correct estimation is improved by 30% when the error bound is ${\pm}20^{\circ}$.

  • The object color does not look same under the different light source. It depends on the surface spectral reflectance and the spectral distribution of light source. Therefore we should find the surface spectral reflectance of object color and the spectral distribution of light source for color reproduction. Using Wiener estimation, we can estimate the spectral reflectance from low dimensional images obtained with multi-band image acquisition system. The kind and the number of imaging filters have the effect on the estimation of the spectral reflectance. Therefore it is important that optimal filters are selected to minimize the error of the result. In this paper, we describe methods to select optimal filters with minimum error between measured and estimated surface spectral reflectance and to estimate surface spectral reflectance of Munsell color chart from six multi-band images by using Wiener estimation.
