  • Breeding bird surveys provide the reference information for understanding bird community structure and function in the ecosystem and conserving biodiversity. Recent rapid change of biodiversity due to climate change and other factors has made it necessary to utilize acoustic sensors for accuracy and spatial expansion of forest bird survey data and for time-series monitoring of forest birds. The objective of this study is to investigate the possibility of using acoustic recording sensor to evaluate the diversity of forest birds at breeding season by comparing and analyzing the recorded data of bird songs and field bird survey data. We conducted the site survey and recording in 186 points in 48 areas of 4 regions of Gombaeryeong and Jochimryeong around Jeombongsan Mountain and Jugryeong and Gochiryeong around Sobaeksan Mountain from May 2nd to 16th in 2013. The analysis of the correlation between the recording result and Bird Community Index based on the field survey showed that the number of bird species, population, and the number of bird songs by recording was significantly correlated to the number of species and population by field survey. Moreover, the number of bird species and the number of bird songs by recording showed a significant correlation to species diversity and species richness but no or low significant correlation to species evenness by the field study (observation and listing in parallel). As a result, it was possible to check species composition and species diversity of bird communities by analyzing acoustic recording data on the field. The acoustic recordings of bird songs in the breeding period were more reliable than the non-breeding period in the correlation of recording result and species diversity and for utilization.

  • The present study aims to investigate the soundscapes of Jeju olle route through the soundwalking. In order to do this, sound measurements and sound recording were undertaken at 10 points along Jeju olle route. Also, loudness of background sound and figure sound were examined. Subjective surveys were carried out using questionnaire and interviews with 32 tourists and 5 acoustical specialists in order to investigate the loudest sound, most pleasant and unpleasant sound, and impressive sound among 17 natural and artificial sounds. Additionally, laboratory experiments were achieved to evaluates sound that have been recorded at the field using same questionnaire and the results were compared with those of field experiments. As a result, the sound heard most in Jeju olle route is the sea wave sound, wind sound, automobile noise, and human voice. It was revealed that the most pleasant sound consisted of nature sound among them, and that unpleasant sounds are artificial sounds. The results of subjective test denote that unpleasant sound is affected by ratio of artificial sound and nature sound. And this also affects the assessment about the loudness of the sound. Also, it was found that the results of both field test and laboratory test are closely correlated in the evaluation of loudness of sound and unpleasant feeling.

  • Dynamic Compressors in vocal recordings of modern pop music are essential equipment. Dynamic compressors are applied not only to the mix for listening to music but also to the monitor for the singer to listen to his voice along with the accompaniment while the singer is recording. This study is an experimental study on the effects of a dynamic compressor applied to a monitor environment on the vocal performance of a singer. 10 participating singers participated in the blind test to test how the vocals heard through the monitor would be affected by the 1:1, 2:1 and 4:1 compression ratio. Experimental results show that the higher the compression ratio applied to the monitor, the bigger the song, the brighter the tone, but the pitch becomes finer inaccuracy on the bigger dynamic part of the song. In post-interviews with blinds, it was found that singers generally preferred to hear compressed sound through a compressor on the monitor. Since the music used in the experiment was a ballad with a wide dynamic range, it could not be generalized to all kind of music recordings, but it could provide important implications for the monitoring of recording sites. In addition, We hope that the cognitive science approach to recording technology will be added based on this paper which has been studied through empirical studies on the effect of the monitor environment on the singing voice.

  • Efforts to employ smart home sensors to monitor the indoor activities of elderly single residents have been made to assess the feasibility of a safe and healthy lifestyle. However, the bathroom remains an area of blind spot. In this study, we have developed and evaluated a new edge computer device that can automatically detect water usage activities in the bathroom and record the activity log on a cloud server. Three kinds of sound as flushing, showering, and washing using wash basin generated during water usage were recorded and cut into 1-second scenes. These sound clips were then converted into a 2-dimensional image using MEL-spectrogram. Sound data augmentation techniques were adopted to obtain better learning effect from smaller number of data sets. These techniques, some of which are applied in time domain and others in frequency domain, increased the number of training data set by 30 times. A deep learning model, called CRNN, combining Convolutional Neural Network and Recurrent Neural Network was employed. The edge device was implemented using Raspberry Pi 4 and was equipped with a condenser microphone and amplifier to run the pre-trained model in real-time. The detected activities were recorded as text-based activity logs on a Firebase server. Performance was evaluated in two bathrooms for the three water usage activities, resulting in an accuracy of 96.1% and 88.2%, and F1 Score of 96.1% and 87.8%, respectively. Most of the classification errors were observed in the water sound from washing. In conclusion, this system demonstrates the potential for use in recording the activities as a lifelog of elderly single residents to a cloud server over the long-term.

  • At the paper the method of 3D holographic moving image reconstruction is discused. The main idea of this method is based on the substitution of optically created static hologram by equal diffraction array created by acoustical (AO) field which formed by bulk sound waves. Such sound field can be considered as dynamic optical hologram, which is electrically controlled. At the certain moment of time when the whole hologram already formed, the reference optical beam illuminates it, and due to acoustooptical interaction the original optical image is reconstructed. As the acoustically created dynamic optical hologram is electronically controlled, it can be used for moving 3-dimentional scene reconstruction in real time. The architecture of holographic display for moving scene reconstruction is presented at this paper. The calculated variant of such display laboratory model is. given and discussed. The mathematical simulation of step by step images recording and reconstruction is given. The pictures of calculated reconstructed images are presented. The prospects, application areas, shortcomings and main problems are discussed.

  • Sound can travel a long distance in the ocean; hence, acoustic instruments have been widely used for ocean observations in various fields such as bathymetric survey, object detection, underwater communication, and current measurements. Herein we introduce a pressure-recording inverted echo sounder (PIES) which is one of the most powerful instruments, moored at seafloor for ocean observation in physical oceanography. The PIES can measure various kinds of oceanic phenomena (currents, mesoscale eddies, internal waves, and sea surface height variabilities) and support acoustic telemetry and pop-up data shuttle (PDS) system for remote data acquisition. In this paper, we review uses of PIES and describe present and prospective system of PIES including remote data acquisition toward (quasi) real-time data recovery.

  • It is clinically important to determine the physiologic mandibular position as the therapeutic position of the patients who needs the oral rehabilitation and occlusal treatment. Several methods have been employed for the recording the mandibular position. The gothic arch tracer is one of methods to record the mandibular position. The purpose of this study is to record the border position, chewing position, and myocentric position using the newly developed intra oral tracer in 10 subjects with TMJ clicking sound and 10 subjects without TMJ clinking sound.. This study showed that newly developed intra oral tracer allowed clinician the determination of the treatment position on the same horizontal plate which can be used in the full mouth rehabilitation and occlusal treatments. There was no statistically significant difference between clicking group and nonclicking group in the distance of border position-chewing position and the distance of border position-myocentric centric position.
