  • A stream serve the functions of different water utilization, flood control, and the environment, and contributes to the development of national life and culture. On the other hand, it is difficult to efficiently evaluate various projects, such as effectiveness verification and comparison between projects, because the evaluation procedures and evaluation techniques of projects are not uniform and different for each institution. Therefore, a standardization technology was developed for a post-assessment of stream projects that can recognize stream problems and comprehensively evaluate stream-related projects. To this end, various projects, such as project evaluation techniques, national R&D projects, and social welfare projects, were compared and analyzed, and the standardization stages of the project were first suggested. In addition, based on the standardization stage, the evaluation indices for each stage were derived to develop an evaluation table that can evaluate stream-related projects comprehensively. Finally, it is possible to prevent the repeated use of failure factors in the planned projects.

  • The monitoring of vegetation and water quality before(2003), during(2004) and after(2005) the restoration work of Cheonggye Stream indicated that $BOD_5$ concentration before the project averaged 51.1mg/L and that both the inflow of water from Hang River and the funnel of subway station water into the stream lowered the $BOD_5$ to 3.3mg/L, improving its water quality to the third grade. Species of plants slightly increased from 121 to 132 after the restoration. Specifically, perennial plant comprised 35.6%, an increase from 24.8% recorded before the restoration. Phragmites communis and Zoysia japonica communities were observed as the introduction vegetation. However, Humulus japonicus and Erigeron canadensis communities, which were classified into the first grade according to the vegetation conservation classification, were found to be still prevailing though they were dominant community before the restoration, meaning that the ecological condition of plants had not changed very significantly. An the other hand the water quality of the reference reach was classified into the first grade based on $BOD_5$, which implies the water quality of the section was better than the project reaches. Besides the section had more diverse plant species which numbered 154, and furthermore, the rate of immigrated plants comprised 13% which was lower than 28.8% recorded by the project sections. The project reaches are considered to be inferior to the reference section in terms of ecological condition. The effectiveness of the stream restoration cannot be determined only by such short-term investigation as was conducted in this study, and it is considered that the effectiveness of the restoration of Cheonggye Stream can be determined only if investigations in other major factors are conducted over the long-term period.

  • The analysis of correlation between the 9 element (used as the classification standard of stream typology out of the 25 elements pertinent to the survey of hydromorphological structure) and both emerged benthic macroinvertebrate as well as vegetation indicated that the substrate diversity, curvature, and degree of development of the transverse bar had a high correlation with the species composition. Only COD concentration was found to have the statistically significant correlation with the distribution of benthos among the 12 aquatic and chemical elements. Specifically, the analysis of the biotic and abiotic factors in this study indicated that there was a statistically significant correlation between the sand river and cobble river in the positive(+) and negative(-) aspects, suggesting that there is a distinctive difference between the two types of rivers in terms of hydromorphologlcal structure and ecological characteristics. Therefore, the findings of this study imply that the consideration of a biotop is prerequisite for the evaluation of stream status regarding stream restoration or the ecological topology of streams.

  • In stream data processing system, generally the interval queries are in advance registered in the system. When a data is input to the system continuously, for realtime processing, a query indexing method is used to quickly search queries. Thus, a main memory-based query index with a small storage cost and a fast search time is needed for searching queries. In this paper, we propose a LVC-based(Limited Virtual Construct-based) query index method using a hashing to meet the both needs. In LVC-based query index, we divide the range of a stream into limited virtual construct, or LVC. We map each interval query to its corresponding LVC and the query ID is stored on each LVC. We have compared with the CEI-based query indexing method through the simulation experiment. When the range of values of input stream is broad and there are many short interval queries, the LVC-based indexing method have shown the performance enhancement for the storage cost and search time.

  • We propose a fast stream cipher ASC16 for software implementation. ASC16 has a very simple structure with ASR(Arithmetic Shift Register), NLF(Non-Linear Filter), and NLB(Non-Linear Block), and is executed by a word. It is a stream cipher for wireless communication, which makes 32bit key streams using s-box with non-linear transformation. The processed result is almost same as SSC2, 32bit output stream cipher, developed by Zhang, Carroll, and Chan. The period is longer than SSC2, and it causes the difficulty of Correlation attack and raises security very much. The proposed ASC16 is efficiently used in the process of a fast cipher in the limited environment such as wireless communication.

  • The objectives of this study were to assess physical habitat suitability of fish species for different life cycle stages and to suggest appropriate ecological stream flows in a Bokha downstream reach. A dominant species of Zacco platypus was selected as the study fish of which three stages of spawning, juvenile and adult in life cycle were considered into assessment. The stream hydraulic environment was calibrated with HEC-RAS before the PHABSIM simulation. The hydraulics of flow velocity and depth were used to estimate Weighted Usable Area (WUA) by multiplying respective habitat suitability indices with stream area. Overall the WUAs tend to be great in gentle slopes with relatively shallow water depth regions. Maximum WUAs, ie, candidate for ecological flow rates were 1 m3/s, 7 m3/s and 8 m3/s for the respective spawning, juvenile and adult stages of Zacco platypus. Since the ecological flow rates for juvenile and adult stages appeared to be is greater than the abundant flow rate (3.67 m3/s) for the study reach, additional water supply may be needed but should be cautious to avoid the spawning period of Apr through May from the stream water management perspective.

  • Acheilognathus signifer is distributed widely in high density in the Naechon-stream. The order of this-stream was 2 ${\sim}$ 4 and the water width is wide but the depth is relatively shallow and the sinuosity is 1.83, which indicates a meandering stream. The water width/stream width ratio is 1.59, which suggests moderate entrenchment. Naechon-stream was classed as B type by Rosgen (1995). The natural habitat of A. signifer is a slow flow velocity pool, like a backwater pool, which is made up of piled up boulders that restricts the flow of water. The stream bed is made up of boulders and sands that enable the spawning host to inhabit. A. signifer selects a microhabitat where the boulders furnish hiding places. The Habitat of A. signifer is strongly affected by the existence or not there of U. douglasiae sinuolatus. After hatching from the mussel, A. signifer inhabits the surface of the water. It then moves to the low layer once it acquires swimming ability. While A. signifer inhabits the river in summer, A. signifer moves to the deeper layers in winter, where there are the refuge like rocks and boulders. In spring A. signifer moves from the deep water to the river line where the mussels reside.

  • This study was aimed to analyze the water quality characteristics of the Hwapocheon Stream and to be utilized in the further related research. Water in the upper stream became a dammed pool due to the existence of 14 weirs, and pollutants such as both sewage and irrigation water were introduced into the mainstream passing through farming settlements and agricultural land. For these reasons, filamentous cyanobacteria (Oscillatoria sp.) bloomed at the bottom of the dammed pool. Also in the midstream and downstream, tributaries with high pollutant concentrations [e.g., Comocheon (T3) and Yongdeokcheon (T8)] were inflowed, and had a negative impact on water quality of the mainstream, especially nitrogen and phosphorus. In the Hwapocheon Stream, dissolved oxygen (DO) decreased, and suspended solid (SS) increased toward the downstream. The result showed that hydraulic retention time, SS, COD, and concentration of $NH_4{^+}$ were important water quality factors of the Hwapocheon Stream. The high concentration of benthic organic matter and rich in attached algae in the core of Hwapo-wetland were expected to give impact on the water quality of the mainstream. In the spatial manner, water quality showed increasing trend in the weir zone, and it was constant or decreased trend in wetland. In the seasonal manner, the nutrient concentrations were high in the winter dry season, however, the organic matter concentrations were high in spring and summer. Generally, the concentrations of phytoplankton value were $40{\mu}g\;chl-{\alpha}/L$ or less in all reaches except for the high concentrations in the weir and wetland area in June.

  • Morphological and genetic variation of Cottus populations in Korea were compared to each other in the watershed. Morphological variation was analyzed by meristic and morphometric characters, and by fertilized egg sizes. Genetic variation was assessed by amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) fingerprinting. Cottus koreanus populations of rivers and streams running towards the eastern coasts of the Korean Peninsula were significantly different in morphometric characters from populations in rivers and streams running towards the western and southern coasts of the Korean Peninsula, but did not differ in meristric characters and fertilized egg sizes. Cottus populations in the upper streams-Yangyangnamadae Stream, Jusu Stream and Samcheogosip Stream-were the same in meristic and genetic characters. However, the Cottus sp. population from Baebong Stream is related to C. hangiongensis in meristic characteristics and to C. koreanus in the morphometric characteristics of length of the ventral fin ray and in the fertilized egg size. Pairwise genetic distances assessed by the AFLP method among C. koreanus populations were in the range of 0.110 to 0.221. Genetic distances between C. hangiongensis and C. koreanus populations varied from 0.542 to 0.621, and those between the Cottus sp. population of Baebong Stream and C. koreanus populations from 0.222 to 0.304. The result of the UPGMA dendrogram shows the Cottus sp. population of Baebong Stream was clearly separated of other C. koreanus populations.
