  • The purpose of this study is to suggest some references of maintenance and design of concrete gravity dams by analyzing dynamic characteristics in x, y, z directions. It is considered as additional mass, soil interaction for numerical dynamic analysis for gravity concrete dams in Han River basin as some cases. The result shows that the overflow structure can be possibly underestimated for the evaluation of the seismic performance using seismic intensity, modified seismic intensity methods. A much more research is still necessary for the evaluation of comprehensive seismic performance of concrete gravity dam

  • This manuscript introduces the Building Standard Law of Japan revised at 2000, June. Recently, The Building Standard Law of Japan was revised into the performance-based design format following the trend of international. The structural performance was evaluated for two limiting states; serviceability and soundness limit state, and safety limit state. The design earthquake forces were determined on the basis of seismic activities of the construction site, taking into consideration (a)characteristics of focal mechanism, (b)amplification by local surfaces geology, and (c)soil-structure interaction, in addition to the properties of the planned building including scale, configuration, foundation system, and structural characteristics.

  • In this study, a new procedure for solving 2-D dynamic problems of semi-infinite medium in time domain by boundary element method (BEM) is presented. Efficient modelling of the far field region, infinite boundary elements are introduced. The shape function of the infinite boundary element is a combination of decay functions and Laguerre functions. Though the present shape functions have been developed for the time domain analysis, they may be also applicable to the frequency domain analysis. Through the response analysis in a 2-D half space under a uniformly distributed dynamic load, it has been found that an excellent accuracy can be achieved compared with the analytical solution

  • In order to increase the seismic safety of nuclear power plant (NPP) structures in high seismicity regions, seismic isolation techniques can be adapted to NPP structures. In this paper, the applicability of multi-step analysis of seismically isolated NPP containment structures with lead-rubber bearings (LRB) is evaluated. The floor response spectrum of NPP containment structures with equivalent linear LRB and nonlinear LRB are compared. In addition, the force-displacement relationships for equivalent linear LRB and nonlinear LRB are compared.

  • In teleoperation robotic system such as hydraulically actuated robotic excavator for dangerous area, the maneuverability and convenience is the most important part. Particularly the force information is important in dealing with digging and leveling operation in the tole-operated excavator. Excavators are also subject to a wide variation of soil-tool interaction forces. This paper proposes a new force reflecting joystick using pneumatic motor and a new algorithm for selecting force-reflecting gain in a velocity-force type bi lateral teleoperation system. The master system is electrical joystick with the same structure of that of real excavator. Particularly Pneumatic motor is used newly in...

  • This paper presents a systematic procedure to obtain shape functions of the infinite elements for soil-structure interaction analysis. The function spaces are derived from the analytical solutions and appropriate assumptions based on physical interpretation. The function spaces are complete for the surface wave components, but approximate for the body wave components. Three different infinite elements are developed by using the wave functions of the derived function spaces. Numerical example analysis is presented for demonstrating the effectiveness of the present infinite elements.

  • A dynamic fluid-structure-soil interaction analysis method is developed to investigate the effects of rocking motion on the seismic response of the 3-D flexible rectangular liquid storage tanks founded on the deformable ground. The governing equation of 3-D rectangular tanks subjected to the translational and rocking motions is obtained by Rayleigh-Ritz method. The dynamic stiffness matrix of the rigid surface foundation resting on the surface of a stratum are calculated by hyperelement method. The seismic responses of a 3-D flexible tank model founded on the deformable ground is calculated by combining the governing equation of the structural motion with the dynamic stiffness matrix of the rigid surface foundation.

  • Model Order Reduction (MOR) denotes the theory by which one tries to catch a model of order lower than that of the real model. This is conveniently pursued in view of the design of an efficient structural control scheme, just passive within this paper. When the nonlinear response of the reference structural system affects the nature of the reduced model, making it dependent on the visited subset of the input-output space, standard MOR techniques do not apply. The mathematical theory offers some specific alternatives, which however involve a degree of sophistication unjustified in the presence of a few localized nonlinearities. This paper suggests applying standard MOR to the linear parts of the structural system, the interface remaining the original unreduced nonlinear components. A case study focused on the effects of a helicopter land crash is used to exemplify the proposal.
