  • In this study, the relationship between metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Zn. Pb, and Fe) 5 fractions and toxicity of soil samples from various contaminated sites in Korea were investigated. Metal toxicity of soils was tested using MetPLATE$^{TM}$ test kit, which is known as metal sensitive and organic insensitive. Significant amount of Fe was found in soils, and metal contents were in the order of Fe>Zn>Pb>Cu>Cr>Cd. Metal levels in organic fraction were rather high for all metals except Fe, and quite high percentages (35~79%) for residual fraction were observed for all metals. There were no significant relationships between the content of each metal fraction and toxicity which showed regression $R^2$in the range of 0.0003~0.414. However, correlation between toxicity and total metal contents showed regression coefficient $R^2$= 0.72. These results showed that the risk evaluation of metals in contaminated sites should be difficult to assess only by the contents of metal distribution because of the complexity of mixture of various metals.s.

  • This study is conducted to evaluate the leaching of contaminants from mine tailing by natural water and finally to estimate the leaching and transportation of heavy metal contaminants by rainfall. In order to identify contaminated heavy metal of soil, 17 soil, 2 tailing and 2 waste dump and 2 control samples were taken at mine area and analyzed total metal contents. The leaching experiments were conducted using distilled water. Cu, Pb, Zn was extracted from the reddish mine tailing in a short period time, especially the extraction rate of Cu (45.0%) was highest. The contaminants were leached from the yellowish mine tailing within an hour and the leaching rate of Cd (42.0%) and Zn (17.2%) were relatively high. The reddish soil from the waste dump showed leaching of Cu (5.1%), Pb (4.0%) and Zn (3.3%), however the leaching rate was low except Mi (14.2%). From the yellowish soil sampled from the dumping site, the leaching of Cu (8.2%) and Ni (9.7%) was high while the leaching of Zn (0.2%) were relatively low.

  • This paper presents a strategic approach to effective soil conservation planning and management. To do this, the soil loss model, Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE) was used to quantify soil erosion in two basins (Andong and Imha basin), which are distinct in terms of sedimentation in the reservoir of each basin. Areas with high soil erosion potential were analyzed on the basis of land surface characteristics handled by geographic information system (GIS), especially dividing the basin into several sub-basins and then examination was emphasized near the river channel (water-pollutant buffering zone), along which human activities are large. Modeling results show the approach suggested herein provides a basis and guideline for choosing prior erosion risk areas to be examined for soil conservation planning and management. Also, this approach is relatively simple and has wide practical applicability.

  • This study investigated the shear strength characteristics of waste tire powder-added lightweight soil (WTLS), which were developed to recycle dredged soil, bottom ash, and waste tires. The WTLS used in this experiment consisted of dredged soil, bottom ash, waste tire powder, and cement. Test specimens were prepared with various contents of waste tire powder ranging from 0% to 100% at 25% intervals and bottom ash contents of 0% or 100% by the weight of the dry dredged soil. In this study several series of direct shear tests were carried out, which indicated that the shear properties of WTLS were strongly influenced by the mixing conditions, such as the waste tire powder content and bottom ash content. The unit weight, as well as the shear strength of the WTLS, decreased with an increase in waste tire powder content. The shear strength of WTLS with bottom ash was 1.34 times greater than that of WTLS without bottom ash. An average increase in cohesion of 30 kPa was obtained in WTLS with the inclusion of bottom ash due to the bond strength induced from the pozzolanic reaction of the bottom ash. In this test, the maximum value of the internal friction angle was obtained with a 25% content of waste tire powder.

  • Uyeki(1928) classified Pinus densiflora into six ecotypes(Northeastem type, Middle-southern flat type, middle-southern upland type, Wibong type, Ankang type, and Geumgang type) based on the pine tree type. The bark color of Geumgang type was ash-brown color on the lower parts of stem and yellowed color on the upper parts of stem. We investigated the physicochemical properties of soil forests to obtain basic data for preservation of exellent pine (Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki). The results were as follows; The soil texture of the Pinus densiflora for. erecta Uyeki forests were showed nearly as sandy loam, that is, sand, silt and clay were consisted of 72%, 15% and 13%, respectively. Soil acidity(pH 4.6) was lower than Korea average forest soil acidity(pH 5.2). The average contents of available phosphate was 11.7ppm at Sokwang-ri, 26.8ppm at Mt. Eungbong, 24.2ppm at Mt. Kumma. It was the lowest at Uljin(4.6ppm). The contents of carbon was 6.2% at Mt. Chungok, 6.1% at Mt. Eungbong. This value was more than average of Korea forest soil.

  • The scour phenomenon involves the erosive potential of flowing water and the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. The scour phenomenon in cohesive soils is much different from that in non-cohesive soils. Granular soils resist erosion by their buoyant weight and the friction between the particles. The soil particles are dislodged individually from the bed under the action of the eroding fluid. Scour in cohesive soils is much slower and more dependent on soil properties than that in non-cohesive soils. Therefore the analysis models for estimating erosion characteristics of cohesive soils should consider not only flowing water but also the relative ability of the soil to resist erosion. In this study, erosion characteristics for the clay-silt mixed soil will be analyzed as a fundamental study for development of bridge scour analysis and design system considering scour resistance capacity of a soil. For this analysis, the relationship between scour characteristics and soil properties was evaluated through scour rate test with Kaolinite samples remolded using various loading and contents of silt.

  • To compare the relationship between the vertical distribution of heavy metals in paddy soil and soil pH near four abandoned metal mines, 40 paddy surface soils $(0{\sim}15\;cm)$ and 12 soils with soil depths ($0{\sim}20$, $20{\sim}40$, $40{\sim}60$, $60{\sim}80$ and $80{\sim}100$ cm) were collected. Both total and extractable heavy metal contents in soils were analyzed after acid digestion $(HNO_3:HClO_4:H_2SO_4)$ and 0.1 N-HCl extraction, respectively. The 0.1 N-HCl fraction ratio over total contents of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were 57, 30, 23, and 19% respectively. Vertical distribution of heavy metals varied considerably among the different mines. In Choil mine, there was no difference in concentrations of all the metals with soil layers. However, Cu and Pb contents in Gahak mime were high at $0{\sim}20\;cm$ depth, and Zn was high at $0{\sim}40\;cm$ depth. In Sinyemi mine, Cd and Cu contents were high at $0{\sim}40\;cm$ depth. Cd, Cu, and Pb contents in Okcheon mine were high through all soil profiles up to 100 cm soil depth. The 0.1 N-HCl fraction ratio over total contents of heavy metals with soil layers were very high at $0{\sim}20\;cm$ depth. As soil depth increased, fraction ratio of heavy metals decreased at the high soil pH (Gahak, Sinyemi, and Choil mines). However, the ratios of Cd, Cu, and Pb in Okcheon mine, having a relatively lower soil pH than other sites, were relatively similar through all the soil profiles up to 100 cm soil depth. Therefore, it was estimated that the mobility and availability of heavy metals in soils were affected by soil pH.
