Purpose: This study was aimed to investigate the possibility of utilizing smart device-based test (SBT) for competency evaluation in dental education and to analyze the student responses on overall competency evaluation using SBT method, in comparison to ubiquitous-based test (UBT). Materials and Methods: Questionnaire surveys have been conducted at Yonsei University College of Dentistry from 2015 to 2018 to obtain students' feedback on the application of SBT to competency evaluation. In addition, in order to supplement the competency evaluation procedure, considerations were explored by comparing the expected and actual difficulty of each item when preparing items for competency evaluation with SBT. Result: According to the survey results, student responses between the initial two years (2015 and 2016) differed from those in next two years (2017 and 2018). Students in 2017 and 2018 had more positive responses on competency evaluation with SBT. To determine the test validity, criterion-referenced evaluation was adopted to compare the data in 2017 and 2018 and slight differences in test difficulty in 2018 between the expected and actual difficulty of items were found. Conclusion: The results indicated that SBT was more appropriate for competency evaluation than UBT, based on four-year period of competency evaluation. The SBT was not affected by either the file size or the number of test-takers. Interestingly, students were not sensitive to test version of competency evaluation (paper-based test and SBT). This study suggests that the quality of the test items should be measured by continuous monitoring of the expected and actual difficulty of items for determining test validity. More detailed results and discussions of the findings are given for the development of test procedure and further potential research directions in dental education.

Smart homes are expected to offer various intelligent services by recognizing the residents' life pattern, health, and feeling. One of the key issues for realizing the smart home is how to detect the locations of residents. Currently, the research effort is focused on two approaches: terminal-based and non-terminal-based method. The terminal-based method employs a type of device that should be carried by the resident while the non-terminal-based method has no such device. This paper presents a novel non-terminal-based approach using an array of pyroelectric infrared sensors (PIRs) that can detect residents. The feasibility of the system is evaluated experimentally on a test bed.

This research suggested a draft proposal for a smart jacket design, which has applied wearable technologies to provide convenience in daily life. The smart jacket combined with a vest was the casual item for autumn and winter. The heating device was composed of the heating element, battery, controller, electric wire, connector, switch, and charger. A stable electronic conductor fiber of good heating effect with a flexible zigzag form has been selected for the heating element. The lighting device has been made in a way that attaches the LED and its power controller in the same mechanical device. As the result of the wearing test, the heating effect turned out to be effective in the order of: back, both the back and abdomen and only the abdomen. When wearing a smart jacket, the back and abdomen have been selected as favorable body parts for heating. Pockets and hems are selected as the adequate place to attach the LED lighting, and the brightness of LED lighting has turned out to be suitable and useful. Based on the test results, the first draft proposal has attached the heating element only in the back and its controller located in the inside pocket of the vest. In addition, the LED has been attached to the front pocket of the jacket. As to the second draft proposal, heating elements have been placed in the back and the abdomen. Each controller for the heating elements has been placed in the front and inside pocket of vest, and the LED lighting has been attached to the hem of the jacket. The smart jacket combined with a wearable device was assessed by functioning categories. The user showed a high satisfaction in the heating and illuminating function of a smart jacket.

In this paper, we proposed a smart multiple-tap system which a remote user with smartphone can control multiple-taps in order to reduce standby-power consumption more conveniently when plugged-in electric appliances are turned-off. Recently, several researches of smart multiple-tap using IoT technology has reported. However, in these researches, an additional device like as a server computer is necessary, or multiple-taps could be only remotely controlled by smartphone and not directly controlled by on/off switch. The proposed smart multiple-tap system does not need any additional device only if it has a WiFi router, and it can be used for user as well as remote control using smartphone application and physically direct control using contact switches like existing multiple-taps. Our approach is to develop a smart multiple-tap device capable of WiFi communication can each serve as a server or a client, and can be operated by the hybrid switch combining the on/off contact switch and the relay switch. We implemented the prototype of the proposed system composed of the smart multiple-tap device and the smartphone application, and the test of the prototype validates the proposed system.

Recently, many people enjoy movies and music content through their smart devices for using public transportation like as bus or subway. However, because their concentration is aimed at content on their smart devices, passengers sometimes forget to disembark and miss their destination stations. Therefore, in this paper, we propose a destination notification system for disembarking public transport using high frequencies based on the smart devices. We tested 1,000 times real-time destination notification to performance evaluate of the proposed application and service system. According to the test results, the proposed system showed 99.4% and 99.6% accuracy and we confirmed that it could be very useful. As such, the proposed system could be a useful technology for notifying smart device users when to get off public transport, capable of global commercialization.

This paper presents the vibration control performance of the smart passive control system to suppress the undesired vibration of the structure subjected to the earthquake loadings. Smart passive control system is the MR damper-based control system augmented with electromagnetic induction(EMI) device which consists of permanent magnets and solenoid coils. According to the Faraday's law of electromagnetic induction, an EMI device produces electrical energy from the mechanical energy due to the reciprocal motions of the structure and provide it to the MR damper. The smart passive control system can be the simple and easy to implement and maintain control system by replacing the feedback control system including sensors, controllers and external power sources of the conventional MR damper-based semiactive control system with the EMI device. The control performance of the smart passive control system is evaluated through the set of shaking table test considering the various historical earthquake loadings.

In this paper, a power facility communication control device was designed to autonomously determine and separate the fault section through communication between power facilities in the smart grid distribution system. In the power facility communication control device, the control module was designed as a DSP to measure three-phase voltage and current, and the communication module was designed as an embedded-based Raspberry Pi to determine the fault section and realize the fault section separation through communication between power facilities. Communication between DSP and Raspberry Pi was designed by SPI communication, and communication between Raspberry Pi was designed based on Wi-Fi. Finally, a performance evaluation system based on three power facility communication control devices was built, and simulation verification was conducted for various fault events that may occur on the distribution line. As a result of the test evaluation, it was possible to confirm the effectiveness of the design methodology of the communication control device by showing the required response of the communication control device to all test cases.

Thesedays, there are many smart device applications developed, especially on the using various sensors included in the smart device. Smart devices have several sensors which are camera, GPS, mike, and communication module for collecting ubiquitous environment, and many applications are developed by using such sensors. In this paper, we developed the multimedia stream architecture and examined the smart device applications based on open source with front and back-end server clouds for developing the conceptual architecture. Also, we examined the back-end distributed servers, realtime multimedia stream transferring, multi-media store, and media relay for other server and smart devices. We test the examined architecture on the real target environment to collect the SIP initial setup time, media stream delay, and end-to-end play time. The test results show that there have good network operation environment to provide realtime multimedia services, and we need to improve the end-to-end play time by minimizing the initial setup time.
This study is to verify the mediating effect of self-esteem on the effect of the elderly's smart device use on life satisfaction. To this end, secondary data analysis was conducted using the Korea Media Panel Survey conducted by the Information and Communication Policy Institute in 2021. The responses of 3,211 people in their 60s or older who are the subjects of this study were utilized. For analysis, descriptive statistics, correlation, and multiple regression analysis were performed using SPSS, and the Sobel test was conducted to verify mediating effects. As a result, smart device utilization averaged 2.13 points out of 5, indicating that the actual utilization level was less than half. The use of smart devices, an independent variable, had a positive effect on the dependent variable, life satisfaction. Self-esteem, which is a parameter, has been verified as a partial mediating effect in that smart device use affects life satisfaction. Based on the results of this study, various policy and practical measures were proposed to increase the smart device utilization rate of the elderly in Korea, improve self-esteem and life satisfaction, so that they can spend a happy old age.
