The study was conducted to get the basic information for proper protection and management of black-faced spoonbill and their habitats in western coast of South Korea. The species was observed in 8 sites of western coast of South Korea in spring 2000. We confirmed breeding of this species at least 4 pairs in Seokdo island. This island is considered likely to be an imortant breeding site together with Yodo island, Hambakdo island and Yokdo island. Also, we observed breeding of herring gull in Seokdo island and small island nearby Boleumdo island for the first time in South Korea. Chilsando island, Cheonsuman bay and Gyeokyeolbiyeoldo island were considered as stopovers located on the Korean Peninsula route. The other sites were considered as summering sites of the black-faced spoonbill. Especially the birds were constantly observed from breeding season to postbreeding season in Seonduri and Yeochari of Ganghwado island. We have counted maximum 88 individuals gathered at Gaksiyeo in Seonduri and Yeochari on September 3, 2000. The species seemed to gather at these sites after breeding for migration to wintering ground in September. We also surveyed changes of the number of individuals as time of the ebb and flow on September 3 and 6, 2000, their time budgets were affected by the ebb and flow in these sites.
Objective : For the purpose of investigating the herbal resources of Dokdo island, this study was designed. Method : For the first time, we searched the native plants of Dokdo island from research data. And we examined herbological books on the plants of Dokdo island. Result : The native herbaceous plants in Dokdo island were 27 family and 73 species, and the medicinal plants were 49 species among them. The woody plants in Dokdo island were 12 family and 13 species, and the medicinal plants were 10 species among them. The main medicinal parts of medicinal plants were the whole body of herbs, roots, and seeds in order. The herbal medicines with cold or cool nature were 45 species, they took the top nature of the herbal medicines. According to the properties and principal action of native herbal medicines in Dokdo island, the major parts were classified into drugs for clearing away heat, eliminating toxin, activating blood flow and removing blood stasis, urination, removing heat from the blood and stopping of bleeding. The number of native herbal medicines with small toxicity in Dokdo island were 7 species. Conclusion : For the purpose of preserving the native plants of Dokdo island, we should recognize not only medical benefits but also matters that demand special attention.
A survey was conducted on the vegetation of Seogmo island, which is small island (ca. 41 okm2) located about 1km west of Kanghwa island in the central Korea, from Aug. 1983 to May 1984. Based on the field data, actual vegetation map and potential natural vegetation map were made. The island is covered with broad-leaved trees dominated with Quercus variabilis. The dominance diversity curves obtaiend in different associations are grouped in two types, lognormal distribution forms at the undisturbed vegetation and geometric series at the disturbed or rocky sites. It seems that the curves show to us the nature of their ecocline by the hypothesis of some investigators, i.e. Random niche boundary hypothesis, niche preemption hypothesis, lognormal distribution and logarithmic series. Total numbers of vascular plant species of the island were recorded 108 families, 348 genera, 475 species, 73 variaties and 7 forma. And Pte.-Q Index, 0.93, and Fisher's Index, 589.8, were higher than those in neighboring islands.
The recrystallization of polysilicon layer deposited on Si was attemped by means of C02 laser annealing. The polysilicon layer was defined in small island patterns ($50{\mu}m{\times}200{\mu}m$) by means of photolithography prior to the annealings. After the annealing an increase of grain size up to about 50um was obtained.

Easter Island is a small island of $180km^2$, located 3,800 km from the Chilean coast and one of the most isolated inhabited places in the world. Since the mid-twentieth century, it has been undergoing an epidemiological transition in relation to the causes of death, from a predominance of infectious to non-communicable diseases (NCDs) such as cardiovascular ailments and cancer. The aim of this study is to describe the causes of death to Easter Island between 2000 and 2012, so the statistical records of Hanga Roa Hospital and death certificates were reviewed. The period under review of 13 years there was a total of 252 deaths, an average to 19.3 deaths per year. The most frequent causes of death found in the general population of Easter Island were cardiovascular diseases (25.4%), followed by neoplasms (23.4%), accidents (18.6%). Related to Rapa Nui people, cardiovascular and neoplastic diseases (both 26.7%) predominate, while in the population without belonging to the ethnic group the main causes were traumatic (25%) and cardiovascular (22.2%). Comparing the leading causes of death of Easter Island with mainland Chile, it can be seen how they resemble. Taking the island death profile, it is necessary to work on public health strategies aimed to this, considering that some of the causes are completely preventable.

This study is aimed to establish the development plannings for the sustainable tourism of Yongyoo Island and Mooeui Island, neighboring areas of Youngjong Island, for the conservation and environmentally friendly use of Korean coastal wetlands. The concepts of sustainable tourism is described. The current development status and its problems of Youngjong Island and its neighboring areas are analysed. The development plannings for sustainable tourism of Yongyoo Island and Mooeui Island are suggested as follows : (1) The small scale tourism development projects, which are able to represent region's own characteristics, instead of large scale ones, should be performed. (2) The participation of community people should be guaranteed at the beginning stage of the decision making processes for tourism development projects. Additionally, the profits of the development should be fairly distributed among community people. (3) The coastal wetlands should be conserved and their sewage disposal capacity should be protected by way of the minimization of reclamation. (4) The coastal wetlands should be developed into the tourist resorts utilizing migratory birds as tourism resources. In addition, the carrying capacity of the coastal wetlands, which is based on the current status of ecosystems and the Environmental Impact Assessment(EIA), should be calculated.

This study aims to examine factor of tourism attraction and tourism satisfaction in order to product plan of tourism policies related to architecture and urban design focused on Marado, Jeju Island. For that, a questionnaire is conducted by tourists who visit to Marado. The results are as follows. 30s and 40s tourists evaluate that Marado is more attractive in natural environment rather than 60s. Tourists who visit more than four times to Marado evaluated low in satisfaction for landscape of Marado but tourists who reside in other area not Jeju evaluate higher in satisfaction for landscape. The difference of residence areas shows same result in tourism attraction factors. Tourists participating in tour activities show higher in satisfaction rather than no-participants but the difference between participants and no-participants is not showed in tourism attraction factors. Tourism attraction is extracted four factors; natural environment, architectural environment, economic efficiency and psychological factor. The factors of natural environment and architectural environment have the relation with satisfaction but the factors of economic efficiency and psychology do not show no relation with satisfaction.

Small islands rely heavily on groundwater resources in addition to rainwater as the source of freshwater since surface water bodies are often absent. The groundwater resources are vulnerable to sea level rise, coastal flooding, saltwater intrusion, irregular pattern of precipitation resulting in long droughts and flash floods. Increase in population increases the demand for the limited groundwater resources, thus aggravating the problem. In this study, the effects of climate change on Tongatapu Island, Kingdom of Tonga, a small island in Pacific Ocean, are investigated using a sharp interface transient groundwater flow model. Twenty nine downscaled General Circulation Model(GCM) predictions are input to a water balance model to estimate the groundwater recharge. The temporal variation in recharge is predicted over the period of 2010 to 2099. A set of GCM models are selected to represent the ensemble of 29 models based on cumulative recharge at the end of the century. This set of GCM model predictions are then used to simulate a total of six climate scenarios, three each (2010-2039, 2040-2069, and 2070-2099) under RCP 4.5 and RCP 8.5. The impacts of predicted climate change on groundwater resources is evaluated in terms of freshwater volume changes and saltwater ratios in pumping wells compared to present conditions. Though the cumulative recharge at the end of the century indicates a wetter climate compared to the present conditions the large variability in rainfall pattern results in frequent periods of groundwater drought leading to saltwater intrusion in pumping wells. Thus for sustaining the limited groundwater resources in small islands, implementation of timely assessment and management practices are of utmost importance.
The early stage of the self assembly for octadecyltrichlorosilane (OTS)-based monolayers is investigated using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Height measurements using AFM prove that the island height of the monolayers gradually increases with increasing the island size, and is close to the limiting value (h = $\sim$25 $\AA$) after d = $\sim$600 nm in size. Since the theoretical length of a covalently bound OTS molecule is 26.2 Å, the limiting value of the island height means that the islands with d ${\geq}$ 600 nm consist of close-packed, fully extended chains. The heights for the islands with d < 600 nm are lower than the limiting value and decrease with decreasing the island sizes. This observation indicates that the OTS molecules in the small islands are less densely packed, and that the packing densities of the islands increase as the islands grow in size.
Numerical studies on the influence of interaction between atmosphere and ocean on the variation of Karman vortex at the lee side of Jeju Island were carried out. Karman vortex tends to be occurred at limited height associated with Hanla mountain. And we can find clear Karman vortex at 900 hPa height in this study. One big vortex cell occurred at lee side of Jeju Island in the begging stage of its development and the cell was divided into three small cells as time goes by. And the strength and lifetime of small vortexes depend on the distribution of SST (Sea Surface Temperature). Weak gradient of SST makes long-lasting Karman vortex but produces weak potential vorticity at lee side of Jeju-do in comparison with the vortex under strong SST gradient. Strong SST gradient also increases not only the mixing depth but also the mixing ratio at lower level of troposphere. And the increased atmospheric mixing decreases the mechanical forcing due to isolated topography. Then the strength of Karman vortex at the lee side of Jeju Island becomes weak under strong gradient of SST. Thus the evolution of Karman vortex is closely related to distribution of SST around the isolated island.
