  • This study is basic research which aims to compare and analyze changes in rural areas in modern times. The main purpose of this study is to comprehend the characteristics of changes in the Korean rural landscape and to suggest the implications for preservation and maintenance of the rural landscape. To help in understanding the rural landscape systematically, it should be divided into six types: housing landscape, cultivation landscape, green landscape, waterside landscape, streetscape and symbolic and religious landscape. According to this step, the contents and the procedures of changes were analyzed generally. Based on the literature review and field survey, the styles of changes were deduced to be formation, alternation, relocation, damage and restoration on landscape elements. Lastly, it was concluded that complex changes of landscape in rural areas from the government's development policy have been continued from macroscopic changes like overall structure and system of landscape to microscopic changes like shape, material, size and color of each landscape element. Rural villages which have not had the government's development policy applied to them may not be appropriate for this study. However, this study has significance in that it can suggest the direction for desirable rural planning. Future studies need to consider landscape change through not only the development policy but also economic, social and cultural factors.

  • With the aim of restoring slow-moving landslide areas, this study collected fundamental data from tree-ring analysis of curved trees in these areas. We collected both upper and lower stem disks to measure the azimuth angles of six trees with growth curvature caused by tension cracks. Additionally, we analyzed various factors in the slow moving landslide area. The geological strata and main constitutive rocks in the study area were anorthosite-formed in the Precambrian period; moreover, there were no intrusive rocks, other geological strata, geological folds, or faults. The talus with weathered rocks was distributed in the upper zone of the slow-moving landslide area. According to annual-ring analysis of curved trees and terrain analysis by satellite imagery, slow-moving landslide occurred from the top to the bottom end of the slope between 1999 and 2011. There was a significant relationship (P < 0.01) between the azimuth angle of cracks caused by the slow-moving landslide and the angle of the curved trees. These results suggest that the occurrence of slow-moving landslides could be confirmed through analysis of annual-rings of curved trees, underground water levels, and terrain (by satellite imagery).

  • Recently, the number of the elderly has increased according to the improvement of socioeconomic status and the efficient medical care system. In spite of the development of medicine, the elderly suffers from the various health problems caused by weakness of musculoskeletal system, cardiopulmonary function and immunologic dysfunction. Regular rhythmic exercise program is known to be one of the effective tools to enhance the health condition in the elderly. However, there has been few studies to evaluate the comprehensive effects of rhythmic movement program on the elderly. This study was focused to evaluate the indices of cardiopulmonary function, life satisfaction, calcium, phosphorous, osteocalcin and deoxypyridinoline which are the essential factors of health problems in the elderly women. Twenty six subjects, aged between 68 and 72, who can do the ordinary activities and do not have cardiovascular dysfunction and mental disorder, participated in this study. They were divided into two groups: 13 in the experimental group and 13 in the control group. The experimental group participated in the rhythmic movement program at the welfare center located in G-city. The program were consisted of three sessions a week during 10 weeks. Each session had three parts: warming up(10 minutes), main exercise(40 minutes), finishing(10 minutes). Heart rate, blood pressure and peripheral arterial oxygen saturation were measured for the evaluation of cardiopulmonary function. Serum calcium, phosphorous, osteocalcin and urine deoxypyridinoline were measured as the indices of bony metabolism. Data were analyzed with mean, standard deviation, $x^2$-test, t-test, paired t-test using SPSS PC+ program. The results of this study were as follows. 1) Heart rate of the experimental group showed significant decrease following the rhythmic movement program. Peripheral arterial oxygen saturation of the experimental group showed significant increase following the program. 2) The degree of life satisfaction of the experimental group showed significant increase following the program. 3) Calcium showed significant decrease following the program but remained within normal range. There was no significant difference of phosphorous between two groups. 4) Osteocalcin, the index of bone formation, showed no significant change following the program, but significant increase in the experimental group comparing with the control group. 5) Deoxypyridinoline, the index of bone resorption, in urine of the experimental group showed significant decrease following the program. In conclusion, the rhythmic exercise program in the elderly showed the improvement of physiologic function and favorable effects on life satisfaction and bony metabolism. According to the above results, the regular rhythmic movement program can be strongly recommended for the improvement of health in the elderly women.

  • This is a study on village names in a plain region of Changnyeong-Gun, a mountain region of Bonghwa-Gun and an island region of Namhae-Gun. The three regions differ in geographical features. The data are based on 455 village names in Changnyeong-Gun, 552 village names in Bonghwa-Gun and 275 village names in Namhae-Gun found in the 1 : 50,000 topographic map. The method of this study is to analyze the word structures of village names in the five basic concepts in geography : Man-Land(Natural Environment and Human Activities). Spatial Relation, Distribution, Region and Transition. The main results of this study are as follows: 1. Naming of villages are related to Natural Environment(41%), Human Activities(23%), Region(17%), Spatial Relation(13%), Distribution(5%), and Transition(3%). Of these six factors, Changnyeong-Gun is relatively dominant in village names related to Spatial Relations, Region and Transition ; Bonghwa-Gun Natural Environment and Namhae-Gun Human Activities and Spatial Relations. But the three Guns are absolutely dominant in village names related to Natural Environment and Human Activities. 2. A village name is divided into the specific name part(given name) and the generic name part(classified name). Names related to Human Activities, Spatial Relations, Distribution and Transition are more frequently found in the specific name part. Therefore, they are used as the given name of a village name. Whereas names related to Natural Environment and Region are more frequently found in generic name part, which means that they are used as the classified name of a village. 3. The word structure of a village name usually has two parts a frontal part(given name) and a rear part(classified name). The two parts have a particular pattern in the geographic concept when they are combined. 1) In the village names related to in their frontal part of the word structure, is more frequently combined as their rear part in Bonghwa-Gun, in Namhae-Gun and in Changnyeong-Gun. 2) In the village names related to in their frontal part of the word structure, is more frequently combined as their rear part in Changnyeong-Gun, in Namhae-Gun and in Bonghwa-Gun. Accordingly, Man(Human Activities) - Land (Natural Environment) can be considered the most important concept in the naming of villages, because the concept is most frequently used in the word structures of village names.

  • The main purpose of this study is to explore the determinants of sex ratio imbalance at birth in Taegu which has experienced the extremely imbalanced sex ratio at birth since mid-1980s. This paper attempts to compare the determinants of sex ratio imbalance at birth, such as sex discrimination against women, son preference, prenatal sex identification followes by sex-selective induced abortions, among married women aged 25 to 44 in Taegu with those in Bay area, California in USA. The research is based on the survey data which were conducted in Taegu, Repulic of Korea and Bay area, California in USA. The findings of this analysis suggest that married women in Taegu are more likely to feel sex discrimination against women than married women in Bay area. Furthermore, the percentage of married women's effort for son bearing before pregnancy is much higher than that of married women in Bay area. We also have found that the percentage of sex-selective induced abortion in Taegu is six times higher than that of married women in Bay area. According to the logistic regression analysis, the determinants of sex-selective induced abortion among married women in Taegu are discrimination against women, son preference, prenatal sex identification. On the other hand, age is the only variable which has an important impact on sex-selective induced abortion among married women in Bay area. From the findings of this study, we can conclude that son preference based on Cofucianism is the most important impact on sex ratio imbalance at birth in Taegu where son preference is much stronger than other regions in Korea. The phenomenon of extremely imbalanced sex ratio at birth in Taegu is the result of combination of these factors, such as strong son preference, seeking to have at least one son within small family size, and prenatal sex identification followed by sex-selective induced abortion.

  • There are various activities for reduction of the greenhouse gasses (GHG) emission around the world. The countries agreed to submit their's individual plans to the United Nations and have operated programs related to the Climate Change, in addition, the enterprises have spontaneously been developed individual calculation methodologies of GHG emission. This paper aims at examining methods for calculating the effect of the reduction of environmental impact, being divided into three categories; international standard, country, enterprise. The reduction effects of environmental impact were compared by applying an existing product of the vehicle undercover and the uni-materialized product and being selected six calculation methods of environmental footprint. There are significant differences according to the evaluation methods of product environmental footprint (PEF) reduction. Main factors of differences are a gap in system boundary, a scope of data collection and the replacement amount standard of existing products. Stakeholders are unreliable in the results of PEF reduction because of the differences in results by each methodology. Therefore, it is necessary to disclose in detail the methodologies of calculating the PEF reduction that relevant people can easily understand, also to enable comparisons of the reduction results by developing the standardization of evaluation methods of PEF in the long term.

  • Background: Panax ginseng cannot be cultivated on the same land consecutively for an extended period, and the underlying mechanism regarding microorganisms is still being explored. Methods: Polymerase chain reaction and denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis (PCR-DGGE) and BIO-LOG methods were used to evaluate the microbial genetic and functional diversity associated with the P. ginseng rhizosphere soil in various cultivation ages and modes. Results: The analysis of microbial diversity using PCR-DGGE showed that microbial communities were significantly variable in composition, of which six bacterial phyla and seven fungal classes were detected in P. ginseng soil. Among them, Proteobacteria and Hypocreales dominated. Fusarium oxysporum, a soilborne pathogen, was found in all P. ginseng soil samples except R0. The results from functional diversity suggested that the microbial metabolic diversity of fallow soil abandoned in 2003was the maximum and transplanted soil was higher than direct-seeding soil and the forest soil uncultivated P. ginseng, whereas the increase in cultivation ages in the same mode led to decreases in microbial diversity in P. ginseng soil. Carbohydrates, amino acids, and polymers were the main carbon sources utilized. Furthermore, the microbial diversity index and multivariate comparisons indicated that the augmentation of P. ginseng cultivation ages resulted in decreased bacterial diversity and increased fungal diversity, whereas microbial diversity was improved strikingly in transplanted soil and fallow soil abandoned for at least one decade. Conclusion: The key factors for discontinuous P. ginseng cultivation were the lack of balance in rhizosphere microbial communities and the outbreak of soilborne diseases caused by the accumulation of its root exudates.

  • This study is to explore how the bondage of street homeless is made and what it implies. In order to do so, this study does participation-observation for the life of the homeless on the street and drop-in-center according to the ethno-graphic research tradition. Starting from the August of 2005, during the period of six months, we did a field study on the actual conditions of facilities for the homeless in the major parts in Seoul and collected the interview data through the interview-in-depth with 8 homeless people. Following the data-analysis procedures of Spradley(1979), we identified the main domains related to the factors for the bonding of street homeless. These domains show us how the homeless people who were left in the whole new world of homelessness just manage to tide over the crisis of identity and survival. The bondage of street homeless in the situation of street homelessness has been shown to have these following meanings: (1) the cultural significance as their second home, (2) the meaning of an alternative group to be admitted, (3) the maintenance of self-identity by way of distinction in the group. According to these, the self-identity of homeless is dual and, therefore, the meaning and interpretation of their relationship is also dual. This dualistic attitude comes from the process in which the homeless acquire the alliance-resource for the very survival and self-existence. The results of this study confirm that the homeless suffer from the lack of true relationship as well as resources. This study suggests that the supporting policies and services for the street homeless should be achieved qualitatively and integrated under a long range plan.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the safety contents presented in high school science textbooks of the 2015 revised national science curriculum. For these, we found safety contents in the inquiries and appendices of 63 science textbooks: integrated science, science inquiry experiment, physics I, II, chemistry I, II, biology I, II, and earth science I, II. We analyzed these safety contents using six safety factors based on the seven standards for safety education. The main results are as follows: First, 81(46.0%) inquiries among 176 curriculum inquiries contain safety contents, and these contents are mainly found in chemistry textbooks, and the least in 'science inquiry experiment' textbooks. Second, safety contents are found the most in 'laboratory safety rule', followed by 'safety symbol' and 'usage of protection equipment'. Third, the safety contents of appendices are mainly in 'laboratory safety rule' and 'accident treatment'. Based on these results of this study, it is concluded that these textbooks have problems; that there is a big difference in describing safety contents in each textbook; that these safety contents are not presented in detail and that the educational effect is reduced. Furthermore, the safety symbol is not standardized. We also discussed ways to improve the safety contents of science textbooks.
