The first step of performance-based design for transmission lines is the determination of wind fields as well as wind loads, which are largely depending on local wind climate and the surrounding terrain. Wind fields in a mountainous area are very different with that in a flat terrain. This paper firstly investigated both mean and fluctuating wind characteristics of a typical mountainous wind field by wind tunnel tests and computational fluid dynamics (CFD). The speedup effects of mean wind and specific turbulence properties, i.e., turbulence intensity, power spectral density (PSD) and coherence function, are highlighted. Then a hybrid simulation framework for generating three dimensional (3D) wind velocity field in the mountainous area was proposed by combining the CFD and proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) method given the properties of the target turbulence field. Finally, a practical 220 kV transmission line was employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed wind field generation framework and its role in the performance-based design. It was found that the terrain-induce turbulence effects dominate the performance-based structural design of transmission lines running through the mountainous area.

In this paper, a new method for finding optimal and short span in Convolutional Self-Doubly Orthogonal(CDO) codes are proposed. This new algorithm based on Parallel Implicitly-Exhaustive search, where we applied dynamic search space reduction methods in order to reduce computational time for finding Optimal Span for R=1/2 rate CDO codes. The simulation results shows that speedup and error correction performance of the new algorithm is better.
The well-known Dimension Exchange Method(DEM) to quantized loads may result in difference in assigned loads to processors as large as logn~units, in the worst case, after balancing for a hypercube of size n. In order to limit the increase of the accumulation of these differences, this paper proposes a method that limits the accumulation of the difference by redistributing an unit load (odd or even) of the same type, if possible, when there is a load distribution between two processors. We reduced the maximum difference to LCEIL logn over {2} RCEIL . The result shows the simulation experiments which show about 30% improvement in speedup compare to the DEM.
This paper presents the implementation of libraries of hardware modules for genetic algorithm using VHDL. Evolvable hardware refers to hardware that can change its architecture and behavior dynamically and autonomously by interacting with its environment. So, it is especially suited to applications where no hardware specifications can be given in advance. Evolvable hardware is based on the idea of combining reconfigurable hardware device with evolutionary computation, such as genetic algorithm. Because of parallel, no function call overhead and pipelining, a hardware genetic algorithm give speedup over a software genetic algorithm. This paper suggests the hardware genetic algorithm for evolvable embedded system chip. That includes simulation results and analysis for several fitness functions. It can be seen that our design works well for the three examples.

With the rapid development of multimedia applications and wireless communication networks, consumer demand for video-over-wireless capability on mobile computing systems is growing rapidly. In this regard, this paper introduces YUV-aware instructions that enhance the performance and efficiency in the processing of color image and video. Traditional multimedia extensions (e.g., MMX, SSE, VIS, and AltiVec) depend solely on generic subword parallelism whereas the proposed YUV-aware instructions support parallel operations on two-packed 16-bit YUV (6-bit Y, 5-bits U, V) values in a 32-bit datapath architecture, providing greater concurrency and efficiency for color image and video processing. Moreover, the ability to reduce data format size reduces system cost. Experiment results on a representative dynamically scheduled embedded superscalar processor show that YUV-aware instructions achieve an average speedup of 3.9x over the baseline superscalar performance. This is in contrast to MMX (a representative Intel#s multimedia extension), which achieves a speedup of only 2.1x over the same baseline superscalar processor. In addition, YUV-aware instructions outperform MMX instructions in energy reduction (75.8% reduction with YUV-aware instructions, but only 54.8% reduction with MMX instructions over the baseline).

In a distributed heterogeneous computing system, the performance of a parallel application greatly depends on its task scheduling algorithm. Therefore, in order to improve the performance, it is essential to consider some factors that can have effect on the performance of the parallel application in a given environment. One of the most important factors that affects the total execution time is a critical path. In this paper, we propose the CLTS algorithm for a task scheduling. The CLTS sets the priorities of all nodes to improve overall performance by applying leveling method to improve parallelism of task execution and by reducing the delay caused by waiting for execution of critical nodes in priority phase. After that, it conditionally uses insertion based policy or duplication based policy in processor allocation phase to reduce total schedule time. To evaluate the performance of the CLTS, we compared the CLTS with the DCPD and the HCPFD in our simulation. The results of the simulations show that the CLTS is better than the HCPFD by 7.29% and the DCPD by 8.93%. with respect to the average SLR, and also better than the HCPFD by 9.21% and the DCPD by 7.66% with respect to the average speedup.

This paper presents an application of parallel Genetic Algorithm-Tabu Search (GA-TS) algorithm to search an optimal solution of a service restoration in distribution systems. The main objective of service restoration of distribution systems is, when a fault or overload occurs, to restore as much load as possible by transferring the do-energized load in the out of service area via network reconfiguration to the appropriate adjacent feeders at minimum operational cost without violating operating constraints, which is a combinatorial optimization problem. This problem has many constraints with many local minima to solve the optimal switch position. This paper develops parallel GA-TS algorithm for service restoration of distribution systems. In parallel GA-TS, GA operators are executed for each processor. To prevent solutions of low fitness from appearing in the next generation, strings below the average fitness are saved in the tabu list. If best fitness of the GA is not changed for several generations, TS operators are executed for the upper $10\%$ of the population to enhance the local searching capabilities. With migration operation, best string of each node is transferred to the neighboring node after predetermined iterations are executed. For parallel computing, we developed a PC cluster system consists of 8 PCs. Each PC employs the 2 GHz Pentium IV CPU and is connected with others through ethernet switch based fast ethernet. To show the validity of the proposed method, proposed algorithm has been tested with a practical distribution system in Korea. From the simulation results, we can find that the proposed algorithm is efficient for the distribution system service restoration in terms of the solution quality, speedup, efficiency and computation time.

This paper presents an application of parallel Genetic Algorithm-Tabu Search(GA-TS) algorithm to search an optimal solution of a reconfiguration in distribution system. The aim of the reconfiguration of distribution systems is to determine switch position to be opened for loss minimization in the radial distribution systems, which is a discrete optimization problem. This problem has many constraints and very difficult to solve the optimal switch position because it has many local minima. This paper develops parallel GA-TS algorithm for reconfiguration of distribution systems. In parallel GA-TS, GA operators are executed for each processor. To prevent solution of low fitness from appearing in the next generation, strings below the average fitness are saved in the tabu list. If best fitness of the GA is not changed for several generations, TS operators are executed for the upper 10% of the population to enhance the local searching capabilities. With migration operation, best string of each node is transferred to the neighboring node aster predetermined iterations are executed. For parallel computing, we developed a PC-cluster system consisting of 8 PCs. Each PC employs the 2 GHz Pentium Ⅳ CPU and is connected with others through ethernet switch based fast ethernet. To show the usefulness of the proposed method, developed algorithm has been tested and compared on a distribution systems in the reference paper. From the simulation results, we can find that the proposed algorithm is efficient and robust for the reconfiguration of distribution system in terms of the solution qualify. speedup. efficiency and computation time.
This paper presents an application of the parallel Adaptive Evolutionary Algorithm (AEA) to search an optimal solution of the service restoration in electric power distribution systems, which is a discrete optimization problem. The main objective of service restoration is, when a fault or overload occurs, to restore as much load as possible by transferring the de-energized load in the out of service area via network reconfiguration to the appropriate adjacent feeders at minimum operational cost without violating operating constraints. This problem has many constraints and it is very difficult to find the optimal solution because of its numerous local minima. In this investigation, a parallel AEA was developed for the service restoration of the distribution systems. In parallel AEA, a genetic algorithm (GA) and an evolution strategy (ES) in an adaptive manner are used in order to combine the merits of two different evolutionary algorithms: the global search capability of the GA and the local search capability of the ES. In the reproduction procedure, proportions of the population by GA and ES are adaptively modulated according to the fitness. After AEA operations, the best solutions of AEA processors are transferred to the neighboring processors. For parallel computing, a PC cluster system consisting of 8 PCs was developed. Each PC employs the 2 GHz Pentium IV CPU and is connected with others through switch based fast Ethernet. To show the validity of the proposed method, the developed algorithm has been tested with a practical distribution system in Korea. From the simulation results, the proposed method found the optimal service restoration strategy. The obtained results were the same as that of the explicit exhaustive search method. Also, it is found that the proposed algorithm is efficient and robust for service restoration of distribution systems in terms of solution quality, speedup, efficiency, and computation time.
