  • Determination of weld-induced residual stress has been an important issue in nuclear power industry because several failures were reported in dissimilar metal weld parts due to primary water stress corrosion cracking. In this context, a couple of remarkable round robin analyses were conducted to quantify the welding simulation variables and to establish optimized numerical analysis process. The purpose of the present research is to introduce welding simulation results for a safety and relief nozzle, which has a dissimilar metal weld part as well as a similar metal weld part. First, finite element analyses are carried out to calculate residual stresses at the inside of nozzle considering only dissimilar metal welding.   • Structural uncertainties are generally modeled using probabilistic approaches in order to quantify uncertainties in behaviors of structures. This uncertainty results from the uncertainties of structural parameters. Monte Carlo methods have been usually carried out for analyses of uncertainty problems where no analytical expression is available for the forward relationship between data and model parameters. In such cases any direct mathematical treatment is impossible, however the forward relation materializes itself as an algorithm allowing data to be calculated for any given model. This study addresses a new method which is utilized as a basis for the uncertainty estimates of structural responses. It applies double uniform random numbers (i.e. DURN technique) to conventional Monte Carlo algorithm. In DURN method, the scenarios of uncertainties are sequentially selected and executed in its simulation. Numerical examples demonstrate the beneficial effect that the technique can increase uncertainty degree of structural properties with maintaining structural stability and safety up to the limit point of a breakdown of structural systems.

  • The simulation analyses of a dish solar power system with stirling engine in this study are applied to system performance prediction if four different test sites; Seoul, Pusan and Cheju in Korea, and Naha in Japan. The effects of difference of concentrator type such as monolithic and stretched-membrane construction on system efficiency are also evaluated. The total amount of generated power for a year depends on the site. However the total maximum system efficiency in every site is approximately 16% and there isnt striking difference. It is also found that the maximum collector efficiency of stretched-membrane concentrator is about 3∼15% lower than that of the monolithic type.

Fundamental Aspects of Hybrid-Online Simulation for One Dimensional Consolidation Analysis (Hybrid-Online 방법을 통한 압밀해석)

  • This paper presented an application of the geotechnical hybrid-online simulation to the consolidation settlement problem of soft clay. Conventional numerical analyses have used idealized soil constitutive models obtained from the laboratory soil tests. On the other hand, in the hybrid-online simulation, soil response was directly introduced to numerical analyses from the soil element test, and, therefore, the complicated parameter estimation was not required in this method. Fundamentals of the hybrid-online simulation method and the development of the algorithm and corresponding hardware and software for the system were presented in this study. Furthermore, an incremental loading consolidation and the hydraulic conductivity test and a comparative study using the Terzagh's conventional consolidation theory were carried out for the system verification including the performance of the experimental device and source coding of software components, and the data reliability obtained from the system. In conclusion, we found that the hybrid-online consolidation simulation system could reproduce the consolidation behavior of the remolded Kaolinite specimen withoutany discrepancies.

An Efficient Heuristic Algorithm of Surrogate-Based Optimization for Global Optimal Design Problems (전역 최적화 문제의 효율적인 해결을 위한 근사최적화 기법)

  • Most engineering design problems require analyses or simulations to evaluate objective functions. However, a single simulation can take many hours or even days to finish for many real world problems. As a result, design optimization becomes impossible since they require hundreds or thousands of simulation evaluations. The surrogate-based optimization (SBO) strategy became a remedy for such computationally expensive analyses and simulations. A surrogate-based optimization strategy has been developed in this study in order to improve global optimization performance. The strategy is a heuristic algorithm and it exploits not only multiple surrogates, but also multiple optimizers. Multiple optimizations of multiple surrogate models yield multiple candidate design points of optima. During the sequential sampling process, the algorithm ranks candidate design points, selects the points as many as specified, and builds the improved surrogate model. Various mathematical functions with different numbers of design variables are chosen to compare the proposed method with the other most recent algorithm, MSEGO. The proposed method shows superior performance to the other method.

Effects of Extending Duration of Nighttime Road Construction (도로품질 향상을 위한 야간 도로공사 시간확대의 영향분석)

  • PURPOSES : This study was conducted to analyze the effects arising from extending the duration of nighttime road construction on improving road quality and durability. METHODS : Most previous studies estimating the social cost of various construction conditions did not consider road pavement cooling time as a factor in improving road pavement quality. This study investigated the feasibility of achieving higher road quality and durability by extending the duration of nighttime road construction time extension. For this investigation, the effects of such an extension on traffic conditions were analyzed based on micro-simulation studies and scenario-based cost-benefit analyses, using factors including traffic volume, delay, construction cost, and road pavement cooling time. RESULTS : The results of the traffic simulation studies and cost-benefit analyses indicate that the current road construction method that emphasizes completing nighttime road construction by 6 a.m. reduces pavement life while causing relatively little traffic delay. If the night construction time is instead extended to 2 p.m., road pavement lifetime is increased, reducing road re-construction cost. These savings are greater than the cost of congestion arising from extending the duration of nighttime construction. CONCLUSIONS : The current nighttime construction durations need to be extended in order to efficiently manage roads and reduce road management costs.

Effectiveness Analysis of Alternatives to Rehabilitate the Distorted hydrologic Cycle in the Anyangcheon Watershed using HSPF (HSPF 모형을 이용한 안양천 유역의 물순환 건전화 대안기술 효과분석)

  • This study developed and calculated alternative evaluation index (AEI) from the effectiveness analyses of alternatives for rehabilitation of distorted hydrologic cycle. The feasible alternatives for the poor-conditioned region in the Anyangcheon watershed were proposed and quantitatively analyzed using continuous water quantity/quality simulation model, Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF). The effectiveness analyses include 355th flow and 275th flow of flow duration curve and number of increased days to satisfy the target monthly flow for water quantity and BOD average concentration, total daily loads and number of increased days to satisfy the target concentration and total daily loads. The feasible alternatives are restoration of covered stream, prevention of streamflow loss through sewers, redevelopment of existing reservoir, reuse of treated wastewater, use of groundwater collected by subway stations and construction of small wastewater treatment plant. Therefore, alternative priority ranking was derived from AEIs. It will be effective to make an integrated watershed management for sustainable development.

Structural Reliability of Thick FRP Plates subjected to Lateral Pressure Loads

  • This paper deals with reliability analysis of specially orthotropic plates subjected to transverse lateral pressure loads by using Monte Carlo simulation method. The plates are simply supported around their all edges and have a low short span to plate depth ratio with rectangular plate shapes. Various levels of reliability analyses of the plates are performed within the context of First-Ply-Failure(FPF) analysis such as ply-/laminate-level reliability analyse, failure tree analysis and sensitivity analysis of basic design variables to estimated plate reliabilities. In performing all these levels of reliability analyses, the followings are considered within the Monte Carlo simulation method: (1) input parameters to the strengths of the plates such as applied transverse lateral pressure loads, elastic moduli, geometric including plate thickness and ultimate strength values of the plates are treated as basic design variables following a normal probability distribution; (2) the mechanical responses of the plates are calculated by using simplified higher-order shear deformation theory which can predict the mechanical responses of thick laminated plates accurately; and (3) the limit state equations are derived from polynomial failure criteria for composite materials such as maximum stress, maximum strain, Tsai-Hill, Tsai-Wu and Hoffman.

Safety Assessment of a Metal Cask under Aircraft Engine Crash

  • The structural integrity of a dual-purpose metal cask currently under development by the Korea Radioactive Waste Agency (KORAD) was evaluated, through numerical simulations and a model test, under high-speed missile impact reflecting targeted aircraft crash conditions. The impact conditions were carefully chosen through a survey on accident cases and recommendations from literature. In the impact scenario, a missile flying horizontally hits the top side of the cask, which is freestanding on a concrete pad, with a velocity of 150 m/s. A simplified missile simulating a commercial aircraft engine was designed from an impact loade-time function available in literature. In the analyses, the dynamic behavior of the metal cask and the integrity of the containment boundary were assessed. The simulation results were compared with the test results for a 1:3 scale model. Although the dynamic behavior of the cask in the model test did not match exactly with the prediction from the numerical simulation, other structural responses, such as the acceleration and strain history during the impact, showed very good agreement. Moreover, the containment function of the cask survived the missile impact as expected from the numerical simulation. Thus, the procedure and methodology adopted in the structural numerical analyses were successfully validated.
