  • Multi-pulse topology of converters using elementary six-pulse GTO - VSC (gate turn off based voltage source converter) operated under fundamental frequency switching (FFS) control is widely adopted in high power rating static synchronous compensators (STATCOM). Practically, a 48-pulse ($6{\times}8$ pulse) configuration is used with the phase angle control algorithm employing proportional and integral (PI) control methodology. These kinds of controllers, for example the ${\pm}80MVAR$ compensator at Inuyama switching station, KEPCO, Japan, employs two stages of magnetics viz. intermediate transformers (as many as VSCs) and a main coupling transformer to minimize harmonics distortion in the line and to achieve a desired operational efficiency. The magnetic circuit needs altogether nine transformers of which eight are phase shifting transformers (PST) used in the intermediate stage, each rating equal to or more than one eighth of the compensator rating, and the other one is the main coupling transformer having a power rating equal to that of the compensator. In this paper, a two-level 48-pulse ${\pm}100MVAR$ STATCOM is proposed where eight, six-pulse GTO-VSC are employed and magnetics is simplified to single-stage using four transformers of which three are PSTs and the other is a normal transformer. Thus, it reduces the magnetics to half of the value needed in the commercially available compensator. By adopting the simple PI-controllers, the model is simulated in a MATLAB environment by SimPowerSystems toolbox for voltage regulation in the transmission system. The simulation results show that the THD levels in line voltage and current are well below the limiting values specified in the IEEE Std 519-1992 for harmonic control in electrical power systems. The controller performance is observed reasonably well during capacitive and inductive modes of operation.

In this study, a mathematical method was developed and a numerical analysis was carried out with various parameters to provide substantial data for optimal design and operation of urban energy supply systems. Components of the system and their specifications, such as a co-generation system and other heating and cooling systems, could be obtained through this analysis for various resource and energy requirements in urban area. In this study, the system constituents and operating characteristics, and their economic performances such as the value of objective function, the amount of energy consumption were discussed for various load patterns and power load ratios. Also, it turns out that the optimal energy supply system can save energy by $10{\sim}20%$ in comparison with the conventional energy supply system.

  • This paper deals with the computation of the current limiting behavior of high-temperature superconducting (HTS) modules for the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL). The SFCL module consists of a monofilar type BSCCO-2212 tube and a shunt coil made of copper or brass. The shunt coil is connected to the monofilar superconducting tube in parallel. Through analysis of the quench behavior of the monofilar component with shunt coils, it is achieved to drive an equivalent circuit equation from the experimental circuit structure. In order to analyze the quench behavior of the SFCL module, we derived a partial differential equation technique. Inductance of the monofilar component and the impedance of the shunt coil are calculated by Bio-Savart and Ohm's formula, respectively. We computed the quench behavior using the calculated values, and compared the results with experimental results for the quench characteristics of a component. The results of computation and test agreed well each other, and it was concluded that the analytic result could be applied effectively to design of the distribution-level SFCL system.

  • This paper presents an ultra wideband(UWB) direct conversion mixer for IEEE 802.15.3a applications with simulation and measurement results. Since the direct conversion mixing causes dc-offset and even-order distortion, the proposed mixer adopts an anti-parallel diode pairs(APDPs) to solve these problems. The proposed mixer consists of an in-phase wilkinson power divider over $3.1{\sim}4.8GHz$, a wideband $45^{\circ}$ power divider over $1.5{\sim}2.4GHz$, and miniatured band pass filters(BPFs) for RF-LO isolations. The conversion loss is optimized with impedance matchings between APDPs and wideband components. The measured mixer shows the conversion loss of 13.5 dB, input third-order intercept-point($IIP_3$) of 7 dBm, and 1-dB gam compression point($P_{1dB}$) of -4 dBm. Quadrature(I/Q) outputs have the magnitude difference of about 1 dB and phase difference of ${\pm}3^{\circ}$.

  • In this paper, a power management circuit was designed to drive the emergency lighting LED in the underground facility for public utilities using magnetic energy harvest. The magnetic energy harvest consists of a harvest elements and power management circuits. The proposed circuit was made of a rectifier, a battery charging circuit, and an LED driving circuit. In normal times, the battery is charged with the harvested power, and in the event of an emergency, the energy stored in the battery is used to drive the LED. As a result of the measurement, it took two minutes to charge the 47 mF capacitor. This is the amount of power that can drive an LED for emergency lighting for about three and a half minutes. Through this, it was confirmed that the power management circuit for magnetic energy harvest proposed in this paper can be used as an emergency lighting LED-driven power device in an underground facility for public utilities where it is difficult to draw separate power.

  • Multi-input-multi-output (MIMO) systems are considered to improve the capacity and reliability of next generation mobile communication. However, the multiple RF chains associated with multiple antennas are costly in terms of size, power and hardware. Antenna selection is a low-cost low-complexity alternative to capture many of the advantages of MIMO systems. We proposed new joint Tx/Rx antenna selection algorithm with low complexity. The proposed algorithm is a method selects $L_R{\times}L_T$ channel matrix out of $L_R{\times}L_T$ entire channel gain matrix where $L_R{\times}L_T$ matrix selects alternate Tx antenna with Rx antenna which have the largest channel gain to maximize Frobenius norm. The feature of this algorithm is very low complexity compare with Exhaustive search which have optimum capacity. In case of $4{\times}4$ antennas selection out of $8{\times}8$ antennas, the capacity decreases $0.5{\sim}2dB$ but the complexity also decreases about 1/10,000 than optimum exhaustive search.

  • Passive autocatalytic recombiner (PAR) is considered as an explosive gas control system in operating NPP plants. This work investigates and evaluates hydrogen recombination performance over manufactured $Pt/TiO_2$ catalysts. When the space velocity increases, the hydrogen conversion decreased, while hydrogen depletion rate (g/sec) increases highly in $35000{\sim}100000hr^{-1}$ Gas Hourly Space Velocity (GHSV). Hydrogen conversion and depletion rate with Pt loading is investigated. As a result, there were no differences in the hydrogen conversion, but exothermic heating rate (K/sec) is increases as Pt loading increases. The catalyst showes a high hydrogen conversion efficiency of 80% under atmospheric conditions.

  • The use of equivalent circuit models of piezoelectric energy harvesters is inevitable when power circuitry including rectifying and smoothing circuit elements is connected to them for evaluating DC electrical outputs. This is because it is difficult to incorporate the electro-mechanical coupling resulting from the additional circuitry into the conventional finite element analysis. Motivated by this observation, we propose a method to accurately extract the equivalent circuit parameters by using commercially available FEM software such as ANSYS which provides three-dimensional AC piezoelectric analysis. Then the equivalent circuit can be analyzed by circuit simulators such as $SimPowerSystems^{TM}$ of MATLAB. While the previous works have estimated the circuit parameters by experimental measurements or by analytical solutions developed only for limited geometries and boundary conditions, the proposed method has no such limitation because piezoelectric energy harvesters of any shapes and boundary conditions can be treated in FEM software. For the verification of the proposed method, multi-modal AC electrical power output by using a corresponding equivalent circuit is compared with that by ANSYS. The proposed method is then shown to be very useful in the subsequent evaluation of DC electrical output which is obtained by attaching a bridge diode and a storage capacitor to a piezoelectric energy harvester.
