A Study on the Preparation of SiC Nano powder from the Si Waste of Solar Cell Industry (태양전지 산업(産業)에서 배출(排出)되는 Si waste로부터 SiC 분말 제조에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • SiC powders have been recovered from silicon-containing waste slurry by carbothermal reduction method with carbon black. Large amount of silicon-containing waste slurry is generated from Solar Cell industry. In an environmental and economic point of view, retrieve of the valuable natural resource from the silicon waste is important. In this study, SiC powder recovered by the reaction ball-milled silicon powder from waste and carbon black at $1350^{\circ}C$ for 3h under vacuum condition. Physical properties of samples have been characterized using SEM, XRD, Particle size analyzer and FT-IR spectroscopy.

Densification and Mechanical Properties of Silicon Nitride Containing Lu2O3-SiO2 Additives (Lu2O3-SiO2계 소결조제를 포함하는 Silicon Nitride의 소결 특성 및 기계적 거동)

  • Gas pressure sintering (GPS) of reaction bonded silicon nitride (RBSN) was performed using $Lu_2O_3-SiO_2$ additive and the properties were compared with those of specimens prepared using high purity $Si_3N_4$ powder. The relative density of RBSN and compacted $Si_3N_4$ powder were 68.9 and 47.1%, and total linear shrinkage after sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$ were 14.8 and 42.9%, respectively. High nitrogen partial pressure (5MPa) was required during sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$ in order to prevent the decomposition of the nitride and to promote the formation of SiC. The relative density and 4-point bending strength of RBSN and $Si_3N_4$ powder compact were 97.7%, 954MPa and 98.2%, 792MPa, respectively, after sintering at $1900^{\circ}C$. The sintered RBSN also showed high fracture toughness of 9.2MPam$^{1/2}$.

Fabrication of TiO2 Coated Si Nano Particle using Silicon Sawing Sludge (실리콘 절삭 슬러지를 이용한 TiO2 코팅 나노 실리콘 입자의 제조)

  • Here, we report the development of a new and low-cost core-shell structure for lithium-ion battery anodes using silicon waste sludge and the Ti-ion complex. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed the raw waste silicon sludge powder to be pure silicon without other metal impurities and the particle size distribution is measured to be from 200 nm to 3 ㎛ by dynamic light scattering (DLS). As a result of pulverization by a planetary mill, the size of the single crystal according to the Scherrer formula is calculated to be 12.1 nm, but the average particle size of the agglomerate is measured to be 123.6 nm. A Si/TiO2 core-shell structure is formed using simple Ti complex ions, and the ratio of TiO2 peaks increased with an increase in the amount of Ti ions. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) observations revealed that TiO2 coating on Si nanoparticles results in a Si-TiO2 core-shell structure. This result is expected to improve the stability and cycle of lithium-ion batteries as anodes.

Tribological Properties of Hot Pressed $SiC/Si_3N_4$ Composites (가압소결 $SiC/Si_3N_4$ 복합체의 마찰마모특성)

  • SiC-Si3N4 composites were prepared by mixing $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder to $\alpha$-SiC powder in the range of 10 to 30 vol% with 10vol% interval. 6wg% Al2O3 and 6wt% Y2O3 were respectively added as sintering aids. Hot pressing was performed at 1,80$0^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour with 25 MPa pressure. In the case of adding 20vol% of $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder the relative density to theoretical value and the flexural strength were 99.1% and 34,420 MPa respectively and the worn amount was 2.09$\times$10-3 mm2 which were the highest values in the all range of he composition. Although the composite containig 10 vol% of $\alpha$-Si3N4 powder showed the highest fracture toughness(KIC) of 4.65MN/m3/2 the reduction of the wear resistance in this composite is likely to be affected by the homogeneity and the uniformity of the grain coalescence and growth during the sintering process.

  • In order to make high-purity ferro-manganese from $Mn_3O_4$ dust, the application of aluminothermy process to the reduction of $Mn_3O_4$ dust was investigated in previous work. The result showed the fact that can be obtained high purity ferro-manganese which have over about 93% of manganese content and lower impurities such as C, P, S than those of KS D3712 specification. The addition of silicon powder instead of aluminum powder was investigated as reductant in the thermite reaction process of $Mn_3O_4$ dust in this work because its production cost is lower than that of aluminum powder. In case of addition of silicon powder only as reductant, the experimental result showed the unstable ignition and no thermite reaction of mixture, but in case of simultaneous addition of silicon and aluminum powders as reductant, showed the fact that can be obtained high purity ferro-manganese which have much low content of impurities such as C, P, S component.

The behavior of Si During Sintering of Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride (반응결합 질화수소의 소결시 규소의 거동에 관한 연구)

  • To investigate the effects of unreacted silicon on the $\alpha$/$\beta$transfornation variation of morphology and mechanical strength of Sintered Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride the mixtures of $\alpha$-$Si_3N_4$ and Si powder and Reaction Bonded Silicon Nitride were heat treated. The heat-treatments were performed in Ar atmosphere in order to inhibit the nitridation of silicon. In the mixtures heat-trated at 1$700^{\circ}C$ the amount of $\beta$-TEX>$Si_3N_4$transformed from $\alpha$-TEX>$Si_3N_4$was sigmoidally increased and the equiaxed $\alpha$-TEX>$Si_3N_4$grains elongated with the amount of silicon and heat treating time. And large $\beta$-TEX>$Si_3N_4$grains grown into silicon were observed. On the other hand there was no change in the heat-treatment of pure $\alpha$-TEX>$Si_3N_4$In case of the heat-treatment of RBSN the same phenomena due to the silicon appearing from the decomposition of $\alpha$-Smatte and needle were observed. From the three point bending test the strength of the sintered specimens with the and without 5wt% silicon addition had 53Kg/$mm^2$ and 73Kg/$mm^2$ respectively.

Properties of SiC Powders Prepared by SHS Method and Its Sintered Bodies (SHS법으로 제조한 SiC분말 및 소결체의 특성)

  • Silicon carbide powder was prepared from mixtures of Sangdong silica sand and carbon black by SHS (Self propagating High temperature Synthesis) method which utilizes magnesiothermic reduction of silica. In the powder preparation process, the reacted powder was leached by chloric acid to remove the magnesium oxide and was subsequently roasted to remove free carbon. The impurities were mostly eliminated by hot acid treatment. The resultant SiC powder showed the mean particle size of 0.22 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ and the specific surface area of $66.55 m^2/g$. The SiC powder was mixed with 1 wt% of boron and of carbon to increase densification rate. The mixed powder was pressed and sintered pressurelessly at $2100^{\circ}C$ for 30 min in argon gas. The sintered body showed the hardness of $2550 kg{\cdot}f/mm^2$ and the fracture toughness, KIC of $3.47 MN/m^{3/2}$.

Studies on the Oxide Bonded Silicon Carbide Porous Materials (산화물 결합 탄화규소 다공질 소재에 관한 연구)

  • Silicon carbide porous materials used for hot gas filters were prepared using oxide binder. Chamotte, frit and H3PO4 were starting materials to synthesize the oxide binder for high temperature-use. Room temperature bending strength of the silicon carbide porous body was increased with increasing firing temprature or with the amount of the content of frit in the oxide binder. However, in the oxidebinder fired above132$0^{\circ}C$, cristobalite form of AlPO4 phase which undergoes rapid inversion became more prominent with increasing firing time. the average pore size of the silicon carbide filter materials was found to be about one third of the average grain size of the silicon carbide powder used in this study.

  • By gel-casting, the silicon-polymer green bodies were prepared for silicon nitride ceramics, sintered by microwave gas phase reaction. Considering the viscosity and the idle time of slurries, we decided the operational conditions of related processes, and the optimum concentrations of raw materials powders, organic monomers, cross-linker, dispersant, initiator, and catalyst. So we could get the machinable green bodies, having about 50 MPa of bending strength without cracks by selecting drying conditions carefully.

  • RBSC (reaction-bonded silicon carbide) represents a family of composite ceramics processed by infiltrating with molten silicon into a skeleton of SiC particles and carbon in order to fabricate a fully dense body of silicon carbide. RBSC has been commercially used and widely studied for many years, because of its advantages, such as relatively low temperature for fabrication and easier to form components with near-net-shape and high relative density, compared with other sintering methods. In this study, RBSC was fabricated with different size of SiC in the raw material. Microstructure, thermal and mechanical properties were characterized with the reaction-sintered samples in order to examine the effect of SiC size on the thermal and mechanical properties of RBSC ceramics. Especially, phase volume fraction of each component phase, such as Si, SiC, and C, was evaluated by using an image analyzer. The relationship between microstructures and physical properties was also discussed.
