  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of occlusal splints on the masseteric silent period and the changes of the masseteric silent period after experimental bruxism with occlusal splints. In nine subjects, anterior occlusal splints were fabricated. The jaw-jerk reflex was induced by tapping over mandibular symphysis area with solenoid driven hammer and electromyogram of left masseter muscle was recorded. In the recorded electromyogram of left masseter muscle the silent period duration was measured. This procedure was done before insertion of anterior occlusal splints, after insertion of anterior occlusal splints, after 30 min experimental bruxism with anterior occlusal splints, and 3hr after removal of anterior occlusal splints. The result were as follows; 1. The mean silent period duration was increased after insertion of occlusal splints compared with the mean silent period duration before insertion of occlusal splints. 2. There was no change of the mean silent period duration after 30 min experimental bruxism with occlusal splints compared with the mean silent period duration after insertion of occlusal splints. 3. 3hr after the removal of occlusal splints, the mean silent period duration showed no difference from the mean silent period duration before insertion of occlusal splints.

  • A mechanical or electrical stimulation to the mandibular symphysis during a maximal voluntary clenching of the teeth always produces a jaw jerk followed by a silent period (transient stops) in the masseteric EMG (electromyogram). Generally, a mechanical stimulation is followed by a single silent period, and an electrical stimulation is followed by multiple silent periods. In this paper, we propose a new algorithm for determining the duration of the masseter silent period. The decision approach in essentially based upon a segmentation algorithm consisted of variance filter, median filter and gaussian filter. The new adaptive digital notch filter using R-CLMS(reverse constrained least mean-squared) algorithm is proposed for the elimination of powerline(60Hz) noise. At the same time, we design a real time measurement system for the EMG silent period under Window base.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the duration of the silent period of the masseter muscle in normal subjects after experimental bruxism. The material for this study consisted of 9 male subjects with an age range of 22-24 years who showed normal occlusion clinically and were free from any history or symptoms of temporomandibular joint dysfunction. A jaw-jerk was stimulated by tapping the mandibular symphysis during maximal voluntary clenching with a solenoid-driven hammer. And three separate silent period records were made from the left masseter muscle at the following times: at normal state, after experimental bruxism, 1 week after bruxism. The following conclusions were obtained: 1. The average value of the duration of masseteric silent period during maximal voluntary clenching was $33.62{\pm}1.86msec$ when tap force of approximate 650g was applied at normal state. 2. After experimental tooth grinding for 30 minutes, the duration of masseteric silent period increased to $46.29{\pm}4.40msec$. 3. Comparing the duration of silent period measured at normal state with that measured after 1 week, the duration of silent period showed reproducibility.

  • This study investigates how EFL learners' chunking ability both in oral and silent reading affects reading comprehension, and how the chunking ability in silent reading relates to that of oral reading. The participants of this study consisted of 30 Korean university students taking a required 'English Reading' course. Chunking is a technique of grouping words into meaningful syntactic units for better understanding. Chunking was measured from pauses in oral reading. Results of this study suggest that the participants who can chunk properly both orally and silently display better comprehension of texts in general. However, chunking in silent reading was found to be a stronger indicator of improved reading comprehension. Also, the chunking skills in silent reading showed a statistically strong correlation with those observed in oral reading, suggesting that the chunking ability in silent reading may develop in parallel with that of oral reading. Oral as well as silent reading should be continuously practiced to improve reading comprehension of all levels of EFL learners, including low levels of learners. There is also a need to encourage students to read aloud with appropriate prosodic cues to help them read in meaningful units of words, therefore increasing EFL learners' comprehension not only in reading but also in listening.

  • This paper pay attention to silent puppets which appear in the traditional puppet performance. Not only movement of silent puppets which are involved with expression of body of the mime, but also various methods overcome limits of the silent are studied in this paper. Through the study of performance method and historic unfolding aspects, I confirm two main points. First point is that overcome limits of the silent, through the diversity of performance aspects. Second point is that silent puppets have been existed since the early stage of history, and show typical unfolding aspects on their way. Combining two main points, We can say that silent puppets go through continuous unfolding aspects on their way and have meaning of existence. The meaning of existence are that silent puppets seek deviant desire which deviate from everyday life and transcendental desire which seek a freedom through an imagination or an idea. It is interesting that the reasons of existence are associated with the emphasis of necessity which is encouragement of audience's desire and imagination that are necessary of accomplish of mime. After all, silent puppets say that diverse attempts which overcome limits of the silent are accomplished with the performance aspects and historic unfolding aspects, and through that sought unusual communication. Through the performance methods and signification aspects, silent puppets say that diverse groping for which maximize of audience's imagination, stimulation of imagination for audience's spontaneousness, and diverse groping for audience mind performance have been performanced as well. I think that those are the voice of silent puppets for activity of mime in the korea.

  • This paper discusses the importance of silent pauses in the perception of prosodic boundaries in Korean speech. It is suggested that in speech in general, and in particular in spontaneous speech, silent pauses are neither necessary nor sufficient for the perception of prosodic boundaries. In read speech, however, there is a high correlation between the presence of a pause and the perception of a boundary. An experiment was carried out to determine whether removing the silent boundary from an extract of speech had a significant effect on the perception of boundaries in Korean read speech. Results suggest that while the presence of a silent boundary slightly reinforces the perception of a prosodic boundary, subjects are in general capable of perceiving the boundary without the silent pause.

  • The purpose of this study was to identify mediating effects of affective commitment between workplace silent behavior and team learning. A team leader should pay attention to workplace silent behavior in that the workplace silent behavior of the team member may have a negative impact on team effectiveness as well as on individual effectiveness. In this study, 106 employees working in diverse domestic companies were surveyed and data were analyzed. The results are as follows. At first, silent behavior has a negative effect on affective commitment. Second. silent behavior has a negative effect on team learning. Third, affective commitment partially mediated silent behavior and team learning. The meaning of these results is that the workplace silent behavior has direct influence on team learning and indirect influence on team learning via affective commitment as well. Based on the results of this study, implications, limitations, and future research topics were discussed.

  • It is common to find cerebral infarct and hemorrhage without definite neurologic signs but with lesions on neuroimaging. These lesions are called silent lacunar infarct and cerebral microbleed. Silent lacunar infarct are frequently seen in the elderly and are associated with clinically apparent stroke and vascular dementia. Known stroke risk factors, such as hypertension, diabetes mellitus, smoking, hypercholesterolemia and heart problems may increase the risk of silent lacunar infarct. Metabolic syndrome, homocysteinemia, renal failure and intima media thickness(IMT) are also other risk factors of the silent lacunar infarct. Cerebral microbleed, lacunar infarct and intracerebral hemorrhage(ICH) have similar pathology and pathogenesis. So, cerebral microbleed are coexisted with lacunar infarct, leukoaraiosis, hypertensive ICH and vascular dementia. Cerebral microbleed are associated with volume and recurrence of ICH. Also cerebral microbleed may reflect baseline status of blood brain barrior disruption. Silent lacunar infarct and cerebral microbleed are very important to clinical management, but in the aspect of insurance medicine and independent medical examiners, these lesions are not subject of evaluation for handicap.
