Underwater communication performance is degraded by the influence of Inter-Symbol Interference (ISI) due to multipath. Passive time reversal processing is the most effective technique for mitigating multipath, and the diversity combining method can be used to improve its performance. This paper analyzed communication performance using the beam diversity combining method, which combines signals obtained through the beam steering to various angles. Directions of arrival were estimated through the beam-time migration, which, in turn, was estimated from probe signals received by a vertical line array. The performance was analyzed based on the number and type of combinations among the estimated angles. In this paper, the data obtained from the Biomimetic Long range Acoustic Communications 2018 (BLAC18) experiment, which was conducted in the East sea, ~50 km east of Pohang, in October 2018, were used for the analysis. The output Signal to Noise Ratio (SNR) was used as communication indicators.

This paper proposes the algorithm for tracking of the residual phase errors incurred by carrier frequency offset and sampling frequency offset in the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems which are suitable for high data rate wireless communications. In the OFDM systems the subcarriers which are orthogonal to each other are modulated by digital data and transmitted simultaneously. The carrier frequency offset causes degradation of signal to noise ratio(SNR) performance and interference between the adjacent subcarriers. The errors in the sampling timing caused by the sampling frequency difference between the transmitter and the receiver sides also cause a major performance degradation in the OFDM systems. The residual error tracking and compensation mechanism is essential in the OFDM system since the carrier and the sampling frequency offset cause the loss of orthogonality resulting in the system performance loss. This paper proposes the scheme where the channel gain and the payload data information are reflected in the residual error tracking process which results in the reduction of the estimation error and the tracking performance improvements under the frequency selective fading wireless channels.
In this paper, we propose a noise whitening decision feedback equalizer for single carrier frequency division multiple access (SC-FDMA) receivers. SC-FDMA has the same advantage as that of orthogonal frequency division multiple access (OFDMA) in which the multipath effect can be removed easily, and also solves the problem of high peak to average power ratio (PAPR) which is the main drawback of OFDMA. Although SC-FDMA is a single carrier transmission scheme, a simple frequency domain linear equalizer (FD-LE) can be implemented as in OFDMA, which can dramatically reduce the equalizer complexity. Moreover, some residual intersymbol interference in the output of the FD-LE can be further removed by an additional nonlinear decision feedback equalizer (DFE) in time domain, because the time domain signal is a digitally modulated symbol. In the conventional DFE, however, the noise is not white at the input of the decision device and correspondingly the decision is not optimum. In this paper, we propose an improved DFE scheme for SC-FDMA systems where a linear noise whitening filter is inserted before the decision device of the conventional DFE scheme. Through computer simulations, we compare the bit error rate performance of the proposed DFE scheme with the conventional equalizers.

In this paper, we propose a sub-cell coverage control algorithm for enhancement of the cell throughput in OFDMA based relay systems. Relay station (RS) is exploited for improved quality of the received signal in cellular communication systems, especially in shadow areas. However, since a RS requires additional radio resource consumption for the link between the base station (BS) and the RS, we have to carefully control the coverage areas if a mobile station (MS) is serviced via the BS or the RS considering the cell throughput. We consider radio resource reuse as well for the sub-cell coverage configuration by applying various reuse patterns between RSs. We also consider a time varying system by adaptively changing the threshold for coverage depending on the MSs' traffic in the cell. We initially determine the sub-cell coverage of the system depending on the ratio of received signal-interference-noise-ratio (SINR) of the MS from the BS and RSs, respectively. Then, the "sub-cell coverage threshold" varies based on the "effective transmitted bits per sub-channel" with time. Simulation result shows that the proposed "time varying coverage control algorithm" leads to throughput improvement compared to the fixed sub-cell coverage configuration.
In non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA), the degraded performance of the weaker channel gain user is a problem. In this paper, we propose the asymmetric binary pulse amplitude modulation (2PAM), to improve the bit-error rate (BER) performance of the weaker channel user in NOMA with the tolerable BER loss of the stronger channel user. First, we design the asymmetric 2PAM, calculate the total allocated power, and derive the closed-form expression for the BER of the proposed scheme. Then it is shown that the BER of the weaker channel user improves, with the small BER loss of the stronger channel user. The superiority of the proposed scheme is also validated by demonstating that the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) gain of the weaker channel user is about 10 dB, with the SNR loss of 3 dB of the stronger channel user. In result, the asymmetric 2PAM could be considered in NOMA of 5G systems. As a direction of the future research, it would be meaningful to analyze the achievable data rate for the propsed scheme.

In this paper, we present an asymptotical analysis of channel capacity of Bell labs layered space-time (BLAST) architectures based on a zero-forcing (ZF) criterion in the sense of signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). We begin by introducing a new relationship related to multi-input multi-output (MIMO) channel capacity. We prove that Diagonal Bell Labs Space-Time (DBLAST) attains the lower bound for MIMO channels when interference nulling is carried out based on the ZF-criterion. An exact closed-form expression for the probability density function of the channel capacity is analyzed. Based on the asymptotic behavior of the channel capacity of each layer, closed-form expressions for the asymptotic ergodic capacity are derived for BLAST. Based on the analysis presented in this paper, we gain an insight on the channel capacity behavior for a MIMO channel. Computer simulation results have verified the validity and accuracy of the proposed analysis for a wide range of antenna array sizes.

This paper describes an equalizer using the DFE (Decision Feedback Equalizer) structure, CMA (Constant Modulus Algorithm) and LMS (Least Mean Square) algorithms. The DFE structure has better channel adaptive performance and lower BER than the transversal structure. The proposed equalizer can be used for 16/64 QAM modems. We employ high speed multipliers, square logics and many CSAs (Carry Save Adder) for high speed operations. We have developed floating-point models and fixed-point models using the COSSAP$\^$TM/ CAD tool and developed VHDL filter. The proposed equalizer shows low BER in multipath fading channel. We have performed models. From the simulation results, we employ a 12 tap feedback filter and a 8 tap feedforward logic synthesis using the SYNOPSYS$\^$TM/ CAD tool and the SAMSUNG 0.5$\mu\textrm{m}$ standard cell library (STD80) and verified function and timing simulations. The total number of gates is about 130,000.

We introduce a hybrid scheduling in a multi-path poor scattering full-duplex (FD) system, which consists of one multi-antenna FD base station and a large number of single-antenna half-duplex mobile stations. Our hybrid scheduling utilizes partial channel state information at the transmitter. In particular, unlike the conventional scheduling method using opportunistic transmission for both uplink and downlink, the proposed scheme combines a random transmit beamforming for downlink and a zero forcing beamforming for uplink. As our main result, via computer simulations, it is shown that the proposed scheme has a superior sum-rate performance than that of the conventional scheduling method beyond a certain signal-to-noise ratio regime.

In this paper, we present a MIMO-OFDM broadband power line communication (BPLC) for Smart Grid and its associated applications and analyze its performance over the 3-phase 4-wire power line channels. For practical BPLC system simulation, we adopt the statistical power line fading channel model instead of the existing deterministic fading channel models (Zimmermann model, MTL model, and so on). In this paper, we implement $2{\times}2$ and $3{\times}3$ MIMO schemes using 3-phase 4-wire power lines. We investigate the capacity loss and BER performance of the proposed MIMO system by considering the effect of cross-talk between antenna paths. We choose space-frequency coding in order to reduce frequency interference between subcarriers and employ maximum ratio combining (MRC) that achieves both multiple antenna path diversity gain and multiple fading path diversity gain. We evaluate the proposed system performance through computer simulation in terms of the impulse noise index and the capacity loss ratio and compare the different signal combining schemes including MRC, equal gain combing (EGC), and selection combining (SC).

Due to the effect of indoor coverage problem, the QoS of the indoor users will be degraded dramatically, with the number of indoor users. The femto cell is a popular solution for such problems. Since the price of the femto base station is usually cheap enough, one can sets up huge number of base stations in a small indoor area to reduce the size of communication cell. In this way, the QoS of the indoor users can be improved significantly. Moreover, the data rate can also be increased. However, how to decide an ideal transmitting power according to the surrounding radio environment is not a trivial problem, that still has not been addressed well. If the transmit power of femto base station is too large, the interference to the macro users will be increased. Conversely, if the transmit power of femto base station is too small; the coverage of femto base station will be reduced. To address this problem, we propose a power configuration method in femto base station using Genetic Algorithm by investigating a new fitness function. Furthermore, we adopt the weighted sum approach to improve the user performance in different modes. The simulation results show that the proposed power configuration method can not only improves the downlink SINR, but also enhance the channel capacity for both the Macro cell systems and Femto cell systems compared with some conventional methods.
