  • This paper researches static and dynamic bending behaviors of a crystalline nano-size shell having pores and grains in the framework of strain gradient elasticity. Thus, the nanoshell is made of a multi-phase porous material for which all material properties on dependent on the size of grains. Also, in order to take into account small size effects much accurately, the surface energies related to grains and pores have been considered. In order to take into account all aforementioned factors, a micro-mechanical procedure has been applied for describing material properties of the nanoshell. A numerical trend is implemented to solve the governing equations and derive static and dynamic deflections. It will be proved that the static and dynamic deflections of the crystalline nanoshell rely on pore size, grain size, pore percentage, load location and strain gradient coefficient.

  • In this study, effect of core-shell structure on compaction behavior of harmonic powder is investigated. Harmonic powders are made by electroless plating method on Fe powders. Softer Cu shell encloses harder Fe core, and the average size of Fe core and thickness of Cu shell are $34.3{\mu}m$ and $3.2{\mu}m$, respectively. The powder compaction procedure is processed with pressure of 600 MPa in a cylindrical die. Due to the low strength of Cu shell regions, the harmonic powders show better densification behavior compared with pure Fe powders. Finite element method (FEM) is performed to understand the roll of core-shell structure. Based on stress and strain distributions of FEM results, it is concluded that the early stage of powder compaction of harmonic powders mainly occurs at the shell region. FEM results also well predict porosity of compacted materials.

  • To understand the formation of core-shell structure in $BaTiO_3$ (BT) grains in multilayer ceramic capacitors, specimens were prepared with BT powders mixed with Y and Mg, and their microstructures were investigated with scanning electron microscopy, x-ray diffractometry, and transmission electron microscopy. Microstructural investigation showed that Y dissolved easily in BT lattice to a certain depth inside of the grain, whereas Mg tended to stay at grain boundaries rather than become incorporated into BT. It was considered that in case of Y and Mg addition in a proper ratio, Y could play a dominant role in the formation of shell leading to a slight dissolution of Mg in the shell. Next, the effects of ball-milling conditions on the core-shell formation were studied. As the ball-milling time increased, the milled powders did not show a significant change in size distribution but rather an increase of residual strain, which was attributed to the milling damage. The increase in milling damage facilitated the shell formation, leading to the increased shell portion in the core-shell grain.

  • The aim of the present study was to investigate the ecological relationship between female body size (=shell length) and fecundity in a Korean population of protandric hermaphrodite, Crepidula onyx Sowerby, using 6 reproductive variables (the number of capsules per brood, capsule size, the number of embryos per capsule, total number of embryos per brood, egg size, and larval size). The investigation was based on 32 females, 107 egg capsules, 263 eggs, and 250 veliger larvae sampled in January 2000, from Yangpo, the southeastern coast of Korea. All foregoing reproductive variables, except larval size, were significantly correlated with the female body size (p<0.001$\~0.01$). There was a significant increase both in the number of capsules per brood and the number of embryos per capsule with female body size (p<0.001). Consequently, the fecundity of the female C. onyx increased with female body size to over 14.65 mm (the minimum size of egg brooding in the present study). This investigation, therefore, provides additional evidence that female fecundity of protandric hermaphrodites is positively correlated with female body size.

  • SiO2/Ag core-shell nanoparticles were synthesized by combining modified Stöber process and reverse micelle method using acetoxime as a reducing agent in water/dodecylbenzenesulfonic acid (DDBA)/cyclohexane reverse micells. The SiO2/Ag core-shells were studied for structure, morphology and size using UV-visible spectroscopy, XRD, SEM and TEM. The size of a SiO2/Ag core-shell could be controlled by changing the [water]/[DDBA] molar ratio (WR) values. The size and the polydispersity of SiO2/Ag core-shells increased with increase of the WR value. The resultant Ag nanoparticles exhibit a strong surface plasmon resonance (SPR) peak at 430 nm over the amorphous SiO2 nanoparticles. The SPR peak shifted to the red side with increase in nanoparticle size. Conductive pastes with 70 wt% SiO2/Ag core-shell were prepared, and the pastes were coated on the PET films using a screen-printing method. The printed paste film of the SiO2/Ag core-shell showed higher surface resistance than the commercial Ag paste in the range of 460~750 µΩ/sq.

  • This paper discusses some techniques for the determination of optimum blank size and pre-form design for multi-stepped deep drawing of oval shell. The deep drawing process of oval shape has been regarded as more difficult than that of cylindrical shell because of its complicated behavior of plastic deformation. But there is insufficient information in this area to carry out successful deep drawing work of irregular products such as oval, rectangular, and square shapes. In order to find the optimum conditions, the drawing apparatus for two kinds of pre-form design are built, a series of drawing experiments performed, and thickness stain distributions measured. From the results of thess suggested experiments, various optimum process variables are observed and discussed.

  • This paper presents vibration and noise control of flexible structures using squeeze mode electro-rheological mounts. After verifying that the damping force of the ER mount can be controlled by the intensity of the electric fild, two different types of ER squeeze mounts have been devised. Firstly, a small size ER mount to support 3 kg is manufactured and applied to the frame structure to control the vibration. An optimal controller which consists of the velocity and the transmitted force feedback signals is designed and implemented to attenuate both the vibration and the transmitted forces. Secondly, a large size of ER mount to support 200 kg is devised and applied to the shell structure to reduce the radiated noise. Dynamic modeling and controller design are undertaken in order to evaluate noise control performance as well as isolation performance of the transmitted force. The radiated noise from the cylindrical shell is calculated by SYSNOISE using forces which are transmitted to the cylindrical shell through two-stage mounting system.

  • Core-shell particles of inorganic/organic pair were synthesized from $CaCO_3$ absorbed sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate(SDBS) surfactant. Shell components were synthesized by sequential emulsion polymerization. Various monomers were used as shell components such as methyl methacrylate(MMA), ethyl acrylate(EA), butyl acrylate(BA), and styrene(St). Ammonium persulfate(APS) was used as an initiator and 2-ethylhexyl acylate(2-EHA) was used as a functional monomer, In the $CaCO_3$/organic core-shell particle polymerization, $CaCO_3$ absorbed surfactant SDBS of 0.5 wt% was prepared first and then core $CaCO_3$ was encapsulated by emulsion polymerization. 0.1 wt% of APS was added sequentially to minimize the formation of new monomer particle during shell polymerization. The structure of inorganic/organic core-shell particles were characterized by measuring the decomposition degree of $CaCO_3$ using HCl solution, thermogravimetric analyzer, scanning electron microscope, and transmission electron microscope.

  • In this paper, the behaviour of shell foundation was studied. In order to perform this study, three studies such as theoretical, numerical and experimental programs were performed. In the theoretical program, the general shallow foundation theories and failure mechanism developed by Terzaghi, Mayerhof and others were reviewed and compared. Based on the previous shallow foundation behaviour, the shell foundation theory was developed using the upper boundary theorem. In the numerical study, the 2 and 3 dimensional FEM simulations were carried out using an uncoupled-analysis approach. From the analysis results, the adequate depth of shell foundation was evaluated. It was also evaluated the bearing capacity according to the shell angle ($120^{\circ}$, $90^{\circ}$, $60^{\circ}$). In the experimental study, the laboratory model tests were carried out for five cases of different foundation shapes including the rectangular and circular foundation in order to verify the theoretical and nemerical study. According to the results of this study, the bearing capacity of shell foundation was theoretically about 15% larger than that of general foundation. However, in the model test, the bearing capacity of shell foundation was about 25 to 30% larger than that of general foundation. In the case of shell angle, the maximum bearing capacity of shell foundation shows when the shell angle of foundation was $60^{\circ}$. In addition, Even if the shell foundation has the various advantages compared with the general foundations as described above, the practical verifications in full scale size will be necessary to use in the field and will be helpful in the technical development of other special foundations.
