  • A computational investigation of blood flow in a coronary artery grafted by artificial bypass was performed to determine such geometric parameters as the curvature of radius, approach length, and angle of end-to-side anastomosis. Transient flow features in the host artery were computed using FVM and SIMPLE algorithms. We compared flow distributions and wall shear stresses in two simple models, planar and non-planar, and confirmed that the non-planar bypass model was more conducive to suppressing intimal hyperplasia. Our non-planar model with $60^{\circ}$ of anastomosis and a 1.0 diameter approach length and radius of curvature predicts a relatively small, spatially-extended high-OSI (>0.01) zone, as well as an increased average wall shear stress on this zone.

  • This paper introduces an improved shear deformation theory for analyzing the buckling behavior of functionally graded plates subjected to varying temperatures. The transverse shear strain functions employed satisfy the stress-free condition on the plate surfaces without requiring shear correction factors. The material properties and thermal expansion coefficient of the porous functionally graded plate are assumed temperature-dependent and exhibit continuous variation throughout the thickness, following a modified power-law distribution based on the volume fractions of the constituents. Moreover, the study considers the influence of porosity distribution on the buckling of the functionally graded plates. Thermal loads are assumed to have uniform, linear, and nonlinear distributions through the thickness. The obtained results, considering the effect of porosity distribution, are compared with alternative solutions available in the existing literature. Additionally, this study provides comprehensive discussions on the influence of various parameters, emphasizing the importance of accounting for the porosity distribution in the buckling analysis of functionally graded plates.

  • Compared with pavement structures of ordinary road sections, pavement structures in the intersection are exposed to more complex traffic characteristics which may exacerbates pavement distresses such as fatigue-cracking, shoving, shear deformation and rutting. Based on a field survey about traffic characteristics in the intersection conducted in Shanghai China, a three dimensional dynamic finite-element model was developed for evaluating the mechanistic responses in the pavement structures under different traffic characteristics, namely uniform speed, acceleration and deceleration. The results from this study indicated that : (1) traffic characteristics have significant effects on the distributions of the maximum principal strain (MPS) and the maximum shear stress (MSS) at the pavement surface; (2) vehicle acceleration or deceleration substantially impact the MPS and MSS at pavement surface and could increase the magnitude of them by 20 percent to 260 percent; (3) in the vertical direction, with the increase of vehicle deceleration rate, the location of the MPS peak value and the MSS peak value changes from the sub-surface layer to the pavement surface.

  • In this study, a finite element model based on the SU/PG scheme was developed to solve shallow-water equations and the influences of parameters and internal boundary conditions on depth-averaged flow behavior were investigated. To analyze the effect of roughness coefficient and eddy viscosity on flow characteristics, the developed model was applied to rectangular meandering channel with two bends, and transverse velocities and water depth distributions were examined. As the roughness coefficient adjacent to wall increased, the velocities near the wall decreased, and the reduced velocities were compensated by the expanding mid-channel velocities. In addition, the flow characteristics around a circular cylinder were analyzed by varying the internal boundary conditions as free slip and no slip. The assignment of slip condition changed the velocity distribution on the cylinder surface and reduced the magnitude of the shear stress up to one third.

  • A simple closed-form solution to calculate the interfacial shear and normal stresses of retrofitted concrete beam strengthened with thin composite plate under mechanical loads including the creep and shrinkage effect has been presented in this paper. In such plated beams, tensile forces develop in the bonded plate, and these have to be transferred to the original beam via interfacial shear and normal stresses. Consequently, debonding failure may occur at the plate ends due to a combination of high shear and normal interfacial stresses. These stresses between a beam and a soffit plate, within the linear elastic range, have been addressed by numerous analytical investigations. Surprisingly, none of these investigations has examined interfacial stresses while taking the creep and shrinkage effect into account. In the present theoretical analysis for the interfacial stresses between reinforced concrete beam and a thin composite plate bonded to its soffit, the influence of creep and shrinkage effect relative to the time of the casting, and the time of the loading of the beams is taken into account. Numerical results from the present analysis are presented both to demonstrate the advantages of the present solution over existing ones and to illustrate the main characteristics of interfacial stress distributions.

  • In this paper, the problem of interfacial stresses in damaged reinforced concrete beams strengthened with bonded prestressed functionally graded material plate and subjected to a uniformly distributed load, arbitrarily positioned single point load, or two symmetric point loads is developed using linear elastic theory. The adopted model takes into account the adherend shear deformations by assuming a linear shear stress through the depth of the damaged RC beam. This solution is intended for application to beams made of all kinds of materials bonded with a thin FGM plate. The results show that there exists a high concentration of both shear and normal stress at the ends of the functionally graded material plate, which might result in premature failure of the strengthening scheme at these locations. Finally, numerical comparisons between the existing solutions and the present new solution enable a clear appreciation of the effects of various parameters of the beams on the distributions of the interfacial stresses.

  • To investigate the characteristics of the merged jet arising from the interaction of two opposing curved wall jets over a circular cylinder in still air, mean velocity, Reynolds stresses, triple moments and integral length scale were measured using hot-wire anenometry. The turbulent kinetic energy and shear stress budget were evaluated using the measured data. The variations of the Reynolds stresses, the triple moment and integral length scale are severe in the interaction region. The pressure diffusion terms are found to be very large when compared the other terms in the interaction region. The distributions of the Reynolds stress and the triple moment in the similar region are found to be similar to those of conventional plane jets.

  • An elastic plate bar jointed to a rigid bar is considered. The bar is subjected to uniform axial tension. A theoretical approximate solution is obtained in an infinite hyperbolic series form and some numerical results for various Poisson's ratios are presented. A rubber plate joined to a strong wooden plate has been tested to obtain an experimental data and the results are compared with theoretical ones. Two values for vertical displacements are in good agreement but it is not satisfactory for horizontal displacements. The conclusion arrived at are as follow : The natures of stress distributions and deformed shapes given by above theoretical solution are compatible in mechanical sense. The magnitudes of stress and displacement components would not be reliable for exact works. A sharp shear stress concentrations are detected at the both ends of the joint.
