  • Procrustes analysis is a useful technique useful to measure, compare shape differences and estimate a mean shape for objects; however it is based on a least squares criterion and is affected by some outliers. Therefore, we propose two generalized Procrustes analysis methods based on M-estimation and least median of squares estimation that are resistant to object outliers. In addition, two algorithms are given for practical implementation. A simulation study and some examples are used to examine and compared the performances of the algorithms with the least square method. Moreover since these resistant GPA methods are available for higher dimensions, we need some methods to visualize the objects and mean shape effectively. Also since we have concentrated on resistant fitting methods without considering shape distributions, we wish to shape analysis not be sensitive to particular model.

  • This paper proposes the nearfield eigenvector method for array shape estimation using reference signals basted on the nearfield signal modeling. Generally. direction finding methods assume the reference signals to be plainwave. However, in case of the reference signals in nearfield, this assumption is inadequate for array shape estimation. In this paper. the nearfield reference signals are modeled. and we propose the nearfield eigenvector method. The numerical experiments indicated that the proposed method shows good performance for array shape estimation regardless of the ranges of the reference signals.

  • To analyze the performance of array shape estimation techniques using auxiliary sensors, the appropriate number and the positions of auxiliary sensors are investigated. Also, a post-processing technique based on spline interpolation is proposed to improve the performance of array shape estimation. The simulation results showed that when auxiliary sensors are arranged uniformly, the performance of shape estimation is better than other arrangements of auxiliary sensors. Also, the proposed post-processing technique improved the performance of the existing shape estimation method, such as Kalman filter method.

  • A shape estimation is needed to control actively a smart structure. A method is, hence, proposed to predict the deformed shape of the structure subjected to unknown external load using the signal from sensors attached to the structure. The shape estimation is based on the relationship between the deformation of the structure and the signal from the sensors. The matrix containing the relationship between the deformation and signal is obtained using fictitious force or eigenvector of global stiffness matrix. Then the deformed shape can be predicted using the linear matrix and signal from sensors attached to the structure. To verify this method, experiment and FEM were performed and it was shown that the shape estimation method based on the fictitious force predicts deflections well and more accurately than that based on eigenvector.

  • A method is proposed to predict the deformed shape of the structure subjected to the unknown external loads using the signal from the piezoceramic sensors. Such a shape estimation is based on the linear relationship between the deformation of structure and the signal from sensor, which is calculated using finite element method. The deformed shape is, then calculated using the linear matrix and the signals from the piezoceramic sensors attached to the structures. For the purpose, a structural analysis program is developed using a multi-layerd finite element of 8 nodes with 3 displacement and one voltage degrees of freedom at each node. The multiple layers with the different material properties can be layered within the element. The incompatible mode with the element is found to be crucial to catch the bending behavior accurately. The accuracy of the program is, then, verified by being compared with the experimental results performed by Crawley. The proposed shape estimation method is also verified for the different loads and sensor size. It is shown that the results of shape estimation method using the linear matrix well predicts the deflections compared with those of finite element method.

  • Three dimensional (3-D) object detection and pose estimation from a single view query image has been an important issue in various fields such as medical applications, robot vision, and manufacturing automation. However, most of the existing methods are not appropriate in a real time environment since object detection and pose estimation requires extensive information and computation. In this paper, we present a fast 3-D object detection and pose estimation scheme based on surrounding camera view-changed images of objects. Our scheme has two parts. First, we detect images similar to the query image from the database based on the shape feature, and calculate candidate poses. Second, we perform accurate pose estimation for the candidate poses using the scale invariant feature transform (SIFT) method. We earned out extensive experiments on our prototype system and achieved excellent performance, and we report some of the results.

  • This paper is concerned with a computational method for recovering a crack shape of steam generator tubes of nuclear plants. Problems on the shape identification are discussed arising in the characterization of a structural defect in a conductor using data of eddy current inspection. A surface defect on the generator tube ran be detected as a probe impedance trajectory by scanning a pancake type coil. First, a mathematical model of the inspection process is derived from the Maxwell's equation. Second, the input and output relation is given by the approximate model by virtue of the hybrid use of the finite element and boundary element method. In that model, the crack shape is characterized by the unknown coefficients of the B-spline function which approximates the crack shape geometry. Finally, a parameter estimation technique is proposed for recovering the crack shape using data from the probe coil. The computational experiments were successfully tested with the laboratory data.

  • In this paper, we proposed a location estimation algorithm considering an extension of searching area in 2.45GHz band RTLS and analyzed its performance in terms of an average estimation error distance. The extendable searching area was assumed to be square of $300m{\times}300m$ and 2 dimensions. The arrangement shape of available readers was considered circle, rectangle, and shrinkage rectangle for extendable searching area. Also, we assumed that propagation path was LOS (Line-Of-Sight) environment, and analyzed the estimation error performance as a function of the number of received sub-blink considering an arrangement shape of available readers in searching area. From the results, compared with rectangle shape, circle shape showed the higher estimation accuracy. Also, we confirmed that the proposed location estimation algorithm provided high estimation accuracy in the shrinkage rectangle shape that was suitable for extension of searching area.

  • Deflection and deformation occur easily in structures with long length, such as bridges and pipelines. Shape monitoring is required for ensuring their structural health. A fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor can be used for monitoring a large-scale structure because of its advantage of multiplexing. In this study, FBG sensors were used for monitoring a composite beam structure, and its strains were measured at multiple points. Thereafter, a shape estimation technique based on the strains was studied. Particularly, a three-dimensional shape estimation technique was proposed for accurate structural health monitoring. A simple experiment was conducted to verify the performance of the shape estimation technique. The result revealed that the estimated shape of the composite beam structure was in agreement with the actual shape obtained after the deformation of the specimen. Additionally, the deflection at a specific point was verified by comparing the estimated and actual deformations measured using a micrometer.

  • TASS(Towed Array Sonar System) is a sonar system which tows the sensor array behind a platform. Array shape is generally assumed to be a straight line. But the array shape is often distorted by oceanic current or platform maneuvering which causes the performance loss of signal processing method like beamforming. So array shape estimation methods are needed. Typically the method based on Kalman filter using heading sensor is used. In practice, the measurement is corrupted by biases which are caused by rotation of the tow cable, varying magnetic fields and slowly varying stresses in the mechanical construction. Although they can't be calibrated but can be estimated. In this paper, we suggest the array shape estimation method based on Kalman filter compensating the sensor biases.
