  • Purpose - This study analyzed the determinants of local unemployment rate in Korea using panel data from 16 metropolitan cities and provinces from 2000 to 2018. Design/methodology/approach - We use a dynamic spatial panel model that considers characteristics of the regional unemployment rate such as the common factors effect, spatial dependence, and serial correlations. Findings - The local unemployment rate is affected by the past and present values of the national unemployment rate. And it is significantly affected by the past local unemployment rate and the past neighboring unemployment rate because spatial dependence and serial correlations are clearly present. In addition, when the industrial structure diversity and labor productivity were high, the regional unemployment rate decreased, and when the education level was high, the regional unemployment rate increased. Research implications or Originality - In order to reduce regional unemployment rate, it is necessary to plan and establish regional customized industrial structure policies under the stance of diversification rather than specializing the regional industrial structure and accompany improvement of the quality of education with the number of years of education. In addition, the redistribution of labor from low labor productivity sectors to high labor productivity sectors through technology development will help to reduce the local unemployment rate.

  • Compression is a very important technique for remotely sensed hyperspectral images. The lossless compression based on the recursive least square (RLS), which eliminates hyperspectral images' redundancy using both spatial and spectral correlations, is an extremely powerful tool for this purpose, but the relatively high computational complexity limits its application to time-critical scenarios. In order to improve the computational efficiency of the algorithm, we optimize its serial version and develop a new parallel implementation on graphics processing units (GPUs). Namely, an optimized recursive least square based on optimal number of prediction bands is introduced firstly. Then we use this approach as a case study to illustrate the advantages and potential challenges of applying GPU parallel optimization principles to the considered problem. The proposed parallel method properly exploits the low-level architecture of GPUs and has been carried out using the compute unified device architecture (CUDA). The GPU parallel implementation is compared with the serial implementation on CPU. Experimental results indicate remarkable acceleration factors and real-time performance, while retaining exactly the same bit rate with regard to the serial version of the compressor.

  • Objective: This study aimed to examine the sequential mediating effects of children's perceived maternal acceptance and peer acceptance in the relationship between maternal warmth and first grade children's school adjustment. Methods: Participants in this study were 979 seven-year-old children(498 boys, 481 girls) recruited for the Korea Child Panel Study. Data were analyzed by analyzing descriptive statistics, correlations, and significance of serial mediation pathways using SPSS 18.0 and PROCESS Macro 3.4. Results: Maternal warmth at age five effected perception of maternal acceptance at age six. Perceived maternal acceptance at age six effected perceived peer acceptance at age six. Perceived peer acceptance at age six effected school adjustment at age seven. Lastly, perceived maternal acceptance and peer acceptance at age six had a serial mediation effect between maternal warmth at age five and school adjustment at age seven. Conclusion/Implications: Perceived social acceptance during preschool years should be emphasized in order to promote school adjustment for first grade children. Parent education for promoting better parent child relationships should be considered and teachers should encourage peer play interaction to help children perceive acceptance from their peers.

  • One of the critical issues in on-chip serial communications is increased power consumption. In general, serial communications tend to dissipate more energy than parallel communications due to bit multiplexing. This paper proposes a low-power bus serialization method. This encodes bus signals prior to serialization so that they are converted into signals that do not greatly increase in transition frequency when serialized. It significantly reduces the frequency by making the best use of word-to-word and bit-by-bit correlations presented in original parallel signals. The method is applied to the revision of an MPEG-4 processor, and the simulation results show that the proposed method surpasses the existing one. In addition, it is cost-effective when implemented as a hardware circuit since its algorithm is very simple.

  • Recently the distributed lag models for time series data have been used in several quantitative analyses. But the analyses of time series which have the serial correlations in error terms and the lagged values of dependent variables violate the hypothesis of OLS method. This paper suggests that the approach technique of distributed lay model with serial correlation should be applied by the Bayesian inference to estimate the parameters. For the application of distributed lag model by Bayesian analysis, the data for monthly consumption expenditure per household by items of commodities from 1972 to 1981 are used in order to estimate the lagged coefficient of processed food and the regression coefficient of the food and beverage.

  • Purpose: This study was designed to determine the correlation between faster response time and functional activities of brain regions during cognitive time management. Methods: Twelve healthy subjects participated in this experiment. Subjects performed the serial reaction time task (SRTT), which was designed by the Superlab program, during fMRI scanning. When the 'asterisk' appeared in the 4 partition spaces on the monitor, the subject had to press the correct response button as soon as possible. Results: fMRI results showed activation of the left primary sensorimotor cortex, both premotor areas, the supplementary motor area, posterior parietal cortex and cerebellum. There were significant correlations, from moderate to strong, between faster reaction time and BOLD signal intensity in activated areas. Conclusion: These results suggest that motor skill learning to be needed cognitive time management is associated with greater activation of large scale sensorimotor networks.

  • The study is to analyze correlation between 12 factors related to the collection development and the collection size by the type of materials of university libraries in Korea. The results of this study are summarized as follows. The result of the correlation analysis: the number of volumes and serials titles showed the positive correlation, except 1∼2 factors by the founder, but there was no correlation between most of factors and the number of nonbok materials. And as the result of Spearman correlation analysis, the rank between correlation coefficients of the national university libraries and those of the private ones showed the coincidence of 61% only in the case of serials. The results of the bring out the significant differences only in total volumes. By the type of materials, between total volumes and added ones, most of factors revealed the higher correlation with total volumes; between added volumes and serial titles, 2∼3 factors brought out the higher correlation with serial titles; between total volumes and serial titles, most of factors showed the higher correlation with total volumes.

  • Experiments were carried out to investigate the condensation heat transfer characteristics for R22 and its alternatives, R407C (R32/125/134a, 23/25/52wt%) and R410A (R32/125, 50/50wt%). A concentric tube heat exchanger was made to conduct condensation heat transfer tests. Mass flux and saturation temperature of refrigerants at the test section inlet were varied to get the corresponding heat transfer coefficients. Serial and parallel input of secondary fluid (water) were applied to the test subsections. Compared with existing correlations of condensation heat transfer, experimental heat transfer coefficients obtained in this study were generally higher than the predicted values, and mean absolute deviations from several correlations were shown. Wall subcooling was introduced to get a new correlation for condensation heat transfer coefficients by modifying Shah's equation. The RMS deviation of the measured heat transfer coefficients from the new correlation in this study for R22 is 9.9% and that for R407C and R410A are 10.2% and 14.6%, respectively.

  • Purpose: This study aimed to evaluate the correlation, according to postnatal age, between plasma B-type natriuretic peptide (BNP) levels and echocardiographic parameters for the assessment of patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in preterm infants with respiratory distress. Methods: We enrolled 42 preterm infants with respiratory distress who underwent serial echocardiographic evaluation with simultaneous plasma BNP measurements until ductal closure. The correlations between BNP levels and the following 4 representative echocardiographic parameters were studied: diameter of the ductus arteriosus (DA), ratio of the left atrial diameter to the aortic diameter (LA/Ao), ratio of the PDA diameter to the infant's left pulmonary artery diameter (PDA/LPA), and the antegrade diastolic flow of LPA (DFLPA). Results: BNP levels were significantly correlated to the magnitude of the ductal shunt, comprising the DA diameter, PDA/LPA ratio, LA/Ao ratio, and antegrade DFLPA for the overall study period. The earliest significant correlation, starting from postnatal day 2, was observed between the LA/Ao ratio and BNP levels. The PDA/LPA ratio and the antegrade DFLPA showed significant correlations with BNP levels postnatal day 3 onward, and with the DA diameter, postnatal day 5 onward. Conclusion: BNP levels and echocardiographic parameters showed a positive correlation, but the significance of the correlations differed according to the postnatal age, especially during the first few days of life.

  • An Integer-valued autoregressive integrated (INARI) model is introduced to eliminate stochastic trend and seasonality from time series of count data. This INARI extends the previous integer-valued ARMA model. We show that it is stationary and ergodic to establish asymptotic normality for conditional least squares estimator. Optimal estimating equations are used to reflect categorical and serial correlations arising from panel count data and variations arising from three random processes for obtaining observation into estimation. Under regularity conditions for martingale sequence, we show asymptotic normality for estimators from the estimating equations. Using cancer mortality data provided by the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS), we apply our results to estimate the probability of cells classified by 4 causes of death and 6 age groups and to forecast death count of each cell. We also investigate impact of three random processes on estimation.
