  • Large dams are managed with operation standard and flood forecasting systems, while small dams do not have management method generally. Shortage of water resources and natural disasters due to drought and flood raised public concerns for management of small dams. Most of small dams are irrigation dams, which need diversified water uses. However, the lack of systematic management of small dams have caused serious water wastage and increased natural disasters. Storage management method and system were developed to solve these problems in small dams. The system was applied to Seongju dam for effective management. The storage management method was established considering hydrology simulation and statistical analysis using the system. This method can bring additional available water, even in the same conditions of the water demand and the supply conditions of watershed. It can improve the flood control capacity and water utilization efficiency by' the flexible operation of storage space.

  • In this study, we developed Open Water Management Program (OWMP) with an open architecture to deal with newly arising upgrade problems for a water management automation system. When we executed OWMP with data produced from an experimental field in Korea, the relative errors of this simulation were less than 5%. We developed runoff calculation model and verified it with measured data of 4 basins included in IHP. The relative errors came out less than 5% in all basins, except for one basin. We also applied OWMP to seongju irrigation reservoir to simulate daily runoff from 1998 to 2002, and the day, month, and year relative error between measured and simulated value was 0.25-0.05. Therefore the OWMP can be a tool nicely adapted to the optimal water management of irrigation reservoir.

  • We propose an improvement of particle swarm optimization (PSO) based on the stabilization of particle movement (PM). PSO uses a stochastic variable to avoid an unfortunate state in which every particle quickly settles into a unanimous, unchanging direction, which leads to overshoot around the optimum position, resulting in a slow convergence. This study shows that randomly located particles may converge at a fast speed and lower overshoot by using the proportional-integral-derivative approach, which is a widely used feedback control mechanism. A benchmark consisting of representative training datasets in the domains of function approximations and pattern recognitions is used to evaluate the performance of the proposed PSO. The final outcome confirms the improved performance of the PSO through facilitating the stabilization of PM.

  • In architectural planning, previous cases of similar spatial program provide important data for architectural design. Case-based reasoning (CBR) paradigm in the field of architectural design is closely related to the designing behavior of a planner who makes use of similar architectural designs and spatial programs in the past. In CBR, spatial graph can be constituted with most fundamental data, which can provide a method of searching spatial program by using visual graphs. This study developed a system for CBR that can analyze the similarity through graph comparison and search for buildings. This is an integrated system that is able to compare space similarity of different buildings and analyze their types, in addition to the analysis on a space within a single structure.

  • Paintings can evoke emotions in viewers. In this paper, we propose a method for extracting emotion from paintings by using the colors that comprise the paintings. For this, we generate color spectrum from input painting and compare the color spectrum and color combination for finding most similarity color combination. The found color combinations are mapped with emotional keywords. Thus, we extract emotional keyword as the emotion evoked by the painting. Also, we vary the form of algorithms for matching color spectrum and color combinations and extract and compare results by using each algorithm.

  • X-ray, optical and electron microscope studies exhibit that the amphiboles in anorthositic saprolite from kaolin deposits, located in Suryun-myeon, Seongju-gun, Kyungsangbuk-do, have altered under weathering conditions to smectite, mixed-layer mineral, vermiculite and goethite. In early supergene alteration stage when rock structure is still preserved, smectite occurs as initial weathering product of amphibole. Further weathering leads to the formation of mixed-layer mineral, vermiculite and goethite as indicated by XRD and SEM studies. Scanning electron microscopy studies of amphibole show that the dissolution of amphibole proceeds by selective etching at the surface along weaker zones producing distinct etch pattern, The calcic amphiboles according to electron microprobe analyses, show leaching of the most mobile elements (Mg, Ca and Fe) during alteration.

  • This study analyzed and evaluated the effect of agricultural water reduction by introducing automated agricultural water management using alternative cost approach. The approach is possible to evaluate none market property as an asset. The saved agricultural water was evaluated as none market property. As the alternative goods, Seongju and Donghwa dam, typical irrigation dams in domestic, were employed. The economic benefit from water saving effect of an automated agricultural water management was calculated as depreciation expense and maintaining cost of construction agricultural dam per saved agriculture water. As a result, the saved agriculture water was 8.5 million ton per year, and the economic benefit of it was $1.3{\sim}2.1$ million won.

  • The agricultural water demand that is calculated in present is difference with practical one by various situations in field. And, by various change, agricultural water demand can not estimate by agricultural land area simply. Considering various situations in field, calculated practical agricultural water demand and applied it to Korea Water Evaluation And Planing System (K-WEAP) in this study. The studied area is Seongju. The studied results showed that agricultural water demand calculate about 5.8 percent higher than existing one, and the agricultural water demand that is applied to K-WEAP calculate about $4{\sim}5.5$ percent higher. Total Agricultural water demand increased about 0.5 percent until 2011.
