The concept of base isolation for equipment is well known. Its application in buildings and structures is rather challenging. Introduction of horizontal flexibility at the base helps in proper energy dissipation at the base level thus reducing the seismic demand of the super structure to be considered during design. The present study shows the results of a series of numerical simulation studies on seismic responses of secondary system (SS) housed in non-isolated and base-isolated primary structures (PS) including equipment-structure interactions. For this study the primary structure consists of two similar single bay three-store reinforced cement concrete (RCC) Frame building, one non-isolated with conventional foundation and another base isolated with Lead plug bearings (LPB) constructed at IIT Guwahati, while the secondary system is modeled as a steel frame. Time period of the base isolated building is higher than the fixed building. Due to the presence of isolator, Acceleration response is significantly reduced in both (X and Y) direction of Building. It have been found that when compared to fixed base building, the base isolated building gives better performance in high seismic prone areas.

This paper presents the results of experimental studies on the equipment isolation effect in the nuclear containment. For this purpose, shaking table tests were performed. The purpose of this study is enhancement of seismic safety of equipment in the Nuclear Power Plant. The isolation system, known as Friction Pendulum System (FPS), combines the concepts of sliding bearings and pendulum motion was selected. Peak ground acceleration, bidirectional motion, effect of vertical motion and frequency contents of selected earthquake motions were considered. As a result, these are founded that the vertical motion of seismic wave affect to the base isolation and the isolation effect decreased in case of near fault earthquake motion.
Smart base isolation systems developed for structures in high seismic regions cannot be directly applied to structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity, such as Korea. Therefore, the problems that occur by applying the smart base isolation system for high seismic regions to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity have been investigated in this study. To this end, a five-story building is used as an example, and an MR damper and low damping elastomeric bearings were used to compose a smart base isolation system. Artificial earthquakes are simulated for ground motions in regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Based on numerical simulation results, the MR damper capacity that can provide good control is quite different among regions of high and low-to-moderate seismicity. Moreover, it is noted that the properties of a smart base isolation system for the regions of low-to-moderate seismicity should be carefully designed because the base isolation effects of the smart base isolation system for high seismic regions deteriorate when it is applied to the structures in regions of low-to-moderate seismicity.

An experimental study was performed to evaluate seismic reduction performance and applicability of 3-dimensional floor isolation system to the main control room of nuclear power plant. A friction pendulum system(FPS) and air spring were designed and fabricated for 3-dimensional floor isolation system. Two kind of the partial experimental model of a main control room attached to the FPS and air spring were tested on the shaking table. The experimental model consisted of a control panel, a $2.5m{\times}2.5m$ access floor, four FPS and air springs. The artificial time histories based on the vertical and horizontal floor response spectrums(OBE, SSE) of the main control room were used as the earthquake input signals in the test. Compared to non-isolated system, the seismic response of experimental models using 3-dimensional floor isolation system were shown considerable seismic reduction performance.
This study investigates the optimum design parameters of a superelastic friction base isolator (S-FBI) system through a multi-objective genetic algorithm to improve the performance of isolated buildings against near-fault earthquakes. The S-FBI system consists of a flat steel-PTFE sliding bearing and superelastic NiTi shape memory alloy (SMA) cables. Sliding bearing limits the transfer of shear across the isolation interface and provides damping from sliding friction. SMA cables provide restoring force capability to the isolation system together with additional damping characteristics. A three-story building is modeled with S-FBI isolation system. Multiple-objective numerical optimization that simultaneously minimizes isolation-level displacements and superstructure response is carried out with a genetic algorithm in order to optimize S-FBI system. Nonlinear time history analyses of the building with optimal S-FBI system are performed. A set of 20 near-fault ground motion records are used in numerical simulations. Results show that S-FBI system successfully control response of the buildings against near-fault earthquakes without sacrificing in isolation efficacy and producing large isolation-level deformations.
Different types of gas reservoir such as Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) are among the strategic infrastructures, and have great importance for any government or their private owners. To keep the tank and its contents safe during earthquakes especially if the contents are of hazardous or flammable materials; using seismic protection systems such as base isolator can be considered as an effective solution. However, the major deficiency of this system can be the large deformation in the isolation level which may lead to the failure of bearing system. In this paper, as a solution, the efficacy of an optimally designed combined vibration control system, the combined laminated rubber isolator and rotational friction damper, is investigated to evaluate the enhancement of an existing metal tank response under both far- and near-field earthquakes. Responses like impulsive and convective accelerations, base shear, and sloshing height are studied herein. The probabilistic framework is used to consider the uncertainties in the structural modeling, as well as record-to-record variability. Due to the high calculation cost of probabilistic methods, a simplified structural model is used. By using the Mont-Carlo simulation approach, it is revealed that this combined isolation system is a highly reliable system which provides considerable enhancement in the performance of reservoir, not only leads to the reduction of probability of catastrophic failure of the tank but also decrease the reservoir damage during the earthquake. Moreover, the relative displacement of the isolation level is controlled very well by this combined system.
Base isolation, one of the popular seismic protection approaches proven to be effective in practical applications, has been widely applied worldwide during the past few decades. As the techniques mature, it has been recognised that, the biggest issue faced in base isolation technique is the challenge of great base displacement demand, which leads to the potential of overturning of the structure, instability and permanent damage of the isolators. Meanwhile, drain, ventilation and regular maintenance at the base isolation level are quite difficult and rather time- and fund- consuming, especially in the highly populated areas. To address these challenges, a number of efforts have been dedicated to propose new isolation systems, including segmental building, additional storey isolation (ASI) and mid-storey isolation system, etc. However, such techniques have their own flaws, among which whipping effect is the most obvious one. Moreover, due to their inherent passive nature, all these techniques, including traditional base isolation system, show incapability to cope with the unpredictable and diverse nature of earthquakes. The solution for the aforementioned challenge is to develop an innovative vibration isolation system to realise variable structural stiffness to maximise the adaptability and controllability of the system. Recently, advances on the development of an adaptive magneto-rheological elastomer (MRE) vibration isolator has enlightened the development of adaptive base isolation systems due to its ability to alter stiffness by changing applied electrical current. In this study, an innovative semi-active storey isolation system inserting such novel MRE isolators between each floor is proposed. The stiffness of each level in the proposed isolation system can thus be changed according to characteristics of the MRE isolators. Non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm type II (NSGA-II) with dynamic crowding distance (DCD) is utilised for the optimisation of the parameters at isolation level in the system. Extensive comparative simulation studies have been conducted using 5-storey benchmark model to evaluate the performance of the proposed isolation system under different earthquake excitations. Simulation results compare the seismic responses of bare building, building with passive controlled MRE base isolation system, building with passive-controlled MRE storey isolation system and building with optimised storey isolation system.

The purpose of this study is to present the design methodology of base isolated buildings. To achieve the goal of this study, time-history analysis was performed with seismic performance level and recorded seismic data. From the analysis results of MDOF system, the maximum. displacement and base shear were evaluated as 25 cm and $4\%$ by the input level which is maximum velocity of 50 kine. By introducing hybrid isolation system, seismic energy can be concentrated consequently high seismic capacity of the total building is secured.

The earthquake-resistant structural systems have to ensure the sufficient stiffness and ductility for the stability For those purposes, recently, the seismic isolation system to reduce earthquake energy has been used. So, it is necessary to examine the characteristics of dynamic behavior of spatial structures governed by higher modes rather than lower modes different from the cases of high rise buildings. The objectives of this paper are to inspect the efficiency of the equivalent model method according to the various earthquake loads and half-open angles. Moreover it is examined the dynamic behaviors according to change the mass and the stiffness of sub-structures as a fundamental study of performance design for the spatial structures. Finally, seismic isolation system is applied to boundary parts of roof system and sub-structure to obtain the target performance.

This study presents the optimal isolation period according to the number of vertically expended stories in order to provide the basic data for the application of the seismic isolation system in the vertically expended remodeling of the aged apartment. As a result of the structural analysis, the isolation period should be at least twice the primary structure in three-story vertical expansion, three times in two-story expansion, and four times in one-story expansion for the effective application of the isolation system. On the basis of the result, the efficacy of an isolation system for the actual apartment structure, which is three-story vertically expended, was analytically verified. The maximal acceleration response on the top floor reduced by 70% and 65% of the non-isolated structure in the X and Y directions respectively. Additionally, the base shear force decreased by 30% in the both directions, compared to the non-isolated structure.
