The skyshine effect is an essential and important phenomenon in the shielding design of the high energy accelerator. In this study, a new estimation method of neutron skyshine was proposed and was verified by comparison with existing methods. The effective dose of secondary neutrons and photons at the locations that was far away from high-energy electron accelerator was calculated using FLUKA and PHITS Monte Carlo code. The transport paths of secondary radiations to reach a long distance were classified as skyshine, direct, groundshine and multiple-shine. The contribution of each classified component to the total effective dose was evaluated. The neutrons produced from the thick copper target irradiated by 10 GeV electron beam was applied as a source term of this transport. In order to evaluate a groundshine effect, the composition of soil on the PAL-XFEL site was considered. At a relatively short distance less than 50 m from the accelerator tunnel, the direct and groundshine components mostly contributed to the total effective dose. The skyshine component was important at a long distance. The evaluated dose of neutron skyshine agreed better with the results using Rindi's formula, which was based on the experimental results at high energy electron accelerator. That also agreed with the estimated dose using the simple evaluation code, SHINE3, within about 20%. The total effective dose, including all components, was 10 times larger than the estimated doses using other methods for this comparison. The influence of multiple-shine path in this evaluation of the estimation method was investigated to be bigger than one of pure skyshine path.
Form the pure Maxwellian distribution(kT= 1.42MeV), the effects upon calibration factors of encapsulating a $^{252}Cf$ spontaneous fission neutron source were investigated to establish a standard neutron field in the Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratory at Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute(KAERI). A Monte Carlo code MCNP was used in simulating the encapsulation SR-Cf-100 and SR-Cf-1273 to be real conditions. The anisotropy(FI) and fluence-to-dose equivalents conversion factors$(H/{\Phi})$ were evaluated and compared with other results. As the results, the FI was determined to be 1.061 at ${\theta}=90^{\circ}$ with ${\pm}0.2%$ statistical error and the $(H/{\Phi})$ was evaluated to be $333.9 [pSv\;cm^2]\;with\;{\pm}0.5%$ statistical error, which is lower by 1.8% than that recommended by the ISO 8529. This means physically that the neutron spectrum of the unmoderated $^{252}Cf$ source in KAERI is a little more softened than that by the ISO.
High-energy proton accelerators continue to be increasingly used in medical, research and industrial settings. However, due to the high energy of protons, a large number of secondary radiation occurs. Among them, neutrons are accompanied by difficulties of shielding due to various energy distribution and permeability. So In this study, we propose a shielding method that can shield neutrons most efficiently by using multiple-shielding material used as a decelerating agent or absorbent as well as a single concrete shielding. The flux of secondary neutrons showed a greater decrease in the flux rate when heavy concrete was used than in the case of ordinary concrete, and the maximum flux reduction was observed at the front position when using multiple shields. Multiple shielding can increase shielding efficiency more than single shielding however, As the thickness of the multiple shielding materials increased, the decline in flux was saturated. The mixture material showed higher shielding results than the polyethylene when using boron carbonate.
The distribution of $^{55}$ Mn and $^{38}$ Cl recoil species following radiative neutron capture in permanganates, chlorates and perchlorates has been investigated by using ion-exchange chromatography method. The whole of the $^{55}$ Mn radioactivity in permanganates appeared in two valence states, the $^{38}$ Cl radioactivity in chlorates in two valence states and also the $^{38}$ Cl radioactivity in perchlorates in three valence states. Recoil energy was calculated. The internal conversion of $^{38}$ Cl isomer transition affects the retention value. The greater the radii of the cation, the higher is the probability of the recoil atom breaking through the secondary cage. In ammonium salt, the ammonium ion behaves as a reducing agent. Crystal structures with their greater free space have shown low retention.
Rare isotope beam facilities require shielding data in early stage of their design. There is much less shielding data on neutrons from the reactions between heavy ion beams and matter than the data on neutrons produced by protons. The purpose of the present work is to produce and thus increase the amount of shielding data on neutrons generated by high-energy heavy ion beams based on the RAON in-flight fragment facility. Calculations were performed with the computational Monte Carlo codes PHITS and MCNPX. The secondary neutron source terms were evaluated at 550 MeV/u for Ca, Kr, and Sn and at 400 MeV/u for U ions on a graphite target. Source terms and attenuation lengths were obtained by fitting the ambient dose equivalent inside an ordinary concrete shield.
$MgB_2$ bulk superconductors are synthesized by the solid state reaction of ($MgB_4$+xMg) precursors with excessive Mg compositions (x=1.0, 1.4, 2.0 and 2.4). The $MgB_4$ precursors are synthesized using (Mg+B) powders. The secondary phases ($MgB_4$ and MgO) present in the synthesized $MgB_4$ are removed by $HNO_3$ leaching. It is found that the formation reaction of $MgB_2$ is accelerated when Mg excessive compositions are used. The magnetization curves of $Mg_1+_xB_2$ samples show that the transition from the normal state to the superconducting state of the Mg excessive samples with x=0.5 and x=0.7 are sharper than that of $MgB_2$. The highest $J_c-B$ curve at 5 K and 20 K is achieved for x=0.5. Further addition of Mg decreases the $J_c$ owing to the formation of more pores in the $MgB_2$ matrix and smaller volume fraction of $MgB_2$.
The purpose of this study was to study the probability of cancer occurrence due to photoneutron dose exposure of the colon and thyroid gland, which are normal organs, in 3D CRT, IMRT 5 portals, and IMRT 9 portals, which are radiotherapy methods for prostate cancer. The total prescribed dose for prostate cancer was 6600 cGy, 220 cGy per dose, and 30 divided irradiations were applied for the total number of times. After setting up the Rando phantom on the treatment table (couch) of the medical linear accelerator used in the experiment, an optically stimulated luminescence albedo neutron dosimeter was placed on the corresponding area of the large intestine and thyroid gland of the phantom for measurement. During 3D CRT of prostate cancer, the probability of secondary cancer due to photoneutron dose to the colon and thyroid gland, which are normal organs, was 1.8 per 10,000 people. And IMRT 5 portals were 8.7 per 10,000 people, which was about 5 times larger than 3D CRT. IMRT 9 portals derived the result that there is a probability that 1.2 people per 1,000 people will develop cancer. Based on this study, the risk of secondary radiation exposure due to the dose of photoneutrons generated during radiation therapy is studied, and it is thought that it will be used as useful data for radiation protection in relation to the stochastic effect of radiation in the future.
Since production of radioactive isotope for using PET, a lot of neutrons were produced. The produced neutrons were mainly shielded by concrete facility. Secondary photons are generated and emitted from the concrete shielding wall of the PET cyclotron since the proton-generated neutrons are thermalized and absorbed in the concrete wall and emit secondary radiations, i.e., photons. This study calculated neutron dose and photon dose at outside of the accelerator facility using MCNPX code. As results of the calculation, total dose were calculated less than limited dose by law.
One of the distinctive characteristics of the evolution of binary systems would be mass transfer. Close binary systems experience so-called Case A mass transfer during the main-sequence. We have performed calculations of the evolution of massive Case A (with the initial period 1.5 ~ 4.5 days) binary systems with the initial mass of 10 ~ 20 solar masses and mass ratio 0.5 ~ 0.95 using the MESA code. We find that in some systems, after the first mass transfer, the secondary stars evolve faster than the primary stars and undergo so-called 'reverse' mass transfer. Such phenomena tend to occur in relatively low-mass (initial mass < 16 solar masses) and close (initial period < 3 day) systems. Unless a system enters the common-envelope phase, the primary star would become a single helium star after the secondary star ends its life if the system were unbound by the neutron star kick. We find the various evolutionary implications of the remaining primary stars. In addition to the evolution into the compact single helium star progenitor, there is a possibility that the remaining primary star could evolve into a helium giant star, which could be a promising candidate for Type Ibn supernova progenitor, depending on the core mass. Further, we find that some primary stars satisfy the conditions for the formation of electron-capture supernova progenitor.

Radiation-induced displacement damage which has caused the increase of the dark current in the focal plane adopted in the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI) was studied in regards of the primary protons and the secondaries generated by the protons in the orbit. By using the Monte Carlo N-Particle Transport Code System (MCNPX) version 2.4.0 along with the Stopping and Range of Ions in Matter version 2010 (SRIM2010), effects of the primary protons as well as secondary particles including neutron, electron, and photon were investigated. After their doses and fluxes that reached onto the charge-coupled device (CCD) were examined, displacement damage induced by major sources was presented.
