Observation of Spatial and temporal variability of sea skin surface temperature by a Thermal Infrared Camera

  • The MUBEX (MUtsu Bay sea surface temperature validation EXperiment) campaign has been held from 1995 to 1997 in summer. During the MUBEX campaign, a thermal infrared camera (TIC) installed on a research vessel, which was also equipped with other various observation devices, was intensively used to observe microscopic structure of sea skin surface temperature (SSST) behavior. We have now a total number of 500,000 images observed by the TIC under various weather conditions, i.e., very calm or wavy sea condition, and clear, patchy or cloudy sky condition. In this paper, we show typical SSST patterns observed by the TIC, and describe the result of statistical analysis of SSST.

Observation on Structural Change of Low Level Atmosphere due to Effect of Sea Breeze (해풍 효과에 의한 저층대기구조 변화의 측정)

  • The surface meteorological and upper layer meteorological observation carried out to investigate influences of sea breeze effect on lower layer atmosphere at Gori nuclear power plant for 29∼30 July, 1996. According to surface meteorological data, the inflow of sea breeze was occurred 11:30 on 29 July, 10:30-on 30 July, respectively, at observation site. And the meteorological tower data showed that wind direction of sea breeze was identified as south-westerly, and wind speed of 58 m was 2 times stronger than that of 10 m. It is notworthy that surface inversion layer which built from the night time to daybreak of next day was not broken off by seab reeze's inflow for daytime, and strong inversion layer observed at 47∼243 m with moderately stable class (F) by URC. It was found that strong stable layer of potential temperature appeared at that layer, maximum relative humidity observed at the bottom of inversion layer and maximum mixing ratio observed in the low of inversion layer.

  • In developing algorithms to retrieve the sea surface temperature (SST) and sea surface wind speed from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR) aboard the AQUA and the Advanced Earth Observation Satellite-II (ADEOS-II), data from the SeaWinds aboard ADEOS-II were helpful. Since features of the ocean microwave emission (Tb) related with ocean wind are not well understood, in case of using only AMSR data, combination of AMSR and SeaWinds revealed pronounced features about the ocean Tb. Two results from combinations of the two sensors were shown in this paper. One result was obtained at wind speeds over about 6m/s, in which the ocean Tb varies with the air-sea temperature difference, even though the SeaWinds wind speed is fixed at the same values. The ocean Tb increases as the air-sea temperature difference becomes negative, i.e., the boundary condition becomes unstable. This result indicates that the air temperature should be included in AMSR SST algorithm. The second result was obtained from comparison of two wind speeds between AMSR and SeaWinds. There is a small difference of two wind speeds, which might be related with several mechanisms, such as evaporation and plankton.

  • The sea water and the soil of surface zone in lagoon have many physical relations between each other by both physical phenomena such as tidal motion and wave action, and activity of a creature which lives in soil zone. The soil zone has an activity of filtering the sea water at lowering tide and also the organic materials in sea water are supplied into the soil. And small creatures such as small crab eat organic materials. Usually the surface zone of lagoon becomes under the sea water in two times of a day and also is coming in two times under the sunshine and it becomes dries up conditions. Authors made the field observation at Sanbannse lagoon in Tokyo bay in several times between 2002 to 2004. The observation has been done in a half period of tide in October and November 2002 and also full tide observation is made in July 2, 2003 in summer and November 26, 2003 in autumn. In 2004, three times observations of full tide has been made in three times as June 22, July 20 and December 14. This report is the summary of results on these observations focusing on the soil surface zone and sea water at under ground and wave breaking zone.

The Modulation of Currents and Waves near the Korean Marginal seas computed by using MM5/KMA and WAVEWATHC-III model

  • We have analyzed the characteristics of the sea surface winds and wind waves near the Korean marginal seas on the basis of prediction results of the sea surface winds from MM5/KMA model, which is being used for the operation system at the Korea Meteorological observation buoy data to verify the model results during Typhoon events. The correlation coefficients between the models and observation data reach up to about 95%, supporting that these models satisfactorily simulate the sea surface winds and wave heights even at the coastal regions. Based on these verification results, we have carried out numerical experiments about the wave modulation. When there exist an opposite strong current for the propagation direction of the waves or wind direction, wave height and length gets higher and shorter, and vice versa. It is proved that these modulations of wave parameters are well generated when wind speed is relatively week.

  • We have analyzed the characteristics of the monthly mean sea surface winds and wind waves near the Korean marginal seas in the 2002 year on the basis of prediction results of the sea surface winds from MM5/KMA model, which is being used for the operation system at the Korea Meteorological Administration and the third generation wave model, WAVEWATCH-III. which takes the sea surface winds derived from MM5/KMA model as the initial data. Statistical comparisons have been applied with both the marine meteorological observation buoy and the TOPEX/POSEIDON satellite wave heights data to verify the model results. The correlation coefficients between the models and observation data reach up to about 60-80%, supporting that these models satisfactorily simulate the sea surface winds and wave heights even at the coastal regions except for Chilbal-Do located very close to the land. Based on these verification results, the distributions of monthly mean sea surface winds, significant wave heights, wave lengths and wave periods around the Korean marginal seas during 2002 year have been represented.

Analysis of Pollutant Loads and Physical Oceanographic Status at the Developing Region of Deep Sea Water in East Sea, Korea (동해 심층수 개발해역의 오염부하량 해석과 해황변동)

  • This study, as a basic study for establishing a influence forecasting/estimating model when drain the deep sea water to the ocean after using it, carried out studies as follows; 1) estimating the amount of river discharge and pollutant loads inflowing into the developing region of deep sea water in East Sea, Korea 2) a field observation of tidal current, vertical distribution of water temperature and salinity, and 3-D numerical experiment of tidal current to analysis physical oceanographic status. The amount of river discharge flowing into the study area was estimated about $462.6{times}10^{3}m^{3}/day$ of daily mean in 2002 year. annual mean pollutant load of COD, TN and TP were estimated 7.02 ton-COD/day, 4.06 ton-TN/day and 0.39 ton/day, respectively. Field observation of tidal current results usually show about $20{\sim}40cm/sec$ of current velocity at the surface layer, it indicated a tendency that the current velocity decreases under 20cm/sec as the water depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the depth increases. We could find a stratification within approximately the depth of 30m in field observation area, and the differences of water temperature and salinity between the surface layer and bottom layer were about $18^{\circ}C$ and 0.8 psu, respectively. On the other hand, we found that there was a definite as the water mass of deep sea water about 34 psu of salinity.

  • Sea surface temperatures (SSTs) estimated from satellite data are affected by various kinds of disturbance factors. In order to accurately estimate SSTs based on radiometric data observed by satellite, it is important to correct the effects by these disturbance factors. We obtained a huge data set of skin sea surface temperature images observed by a thermal infrared camera (TIC) in MUBEX Campaign. TIC installed on an observation vessel recorded sea surface skin temperature distribution under various weather conditions. Based on some special images observed by TIC, we estimated skin effects and effective sea surface emissivity. In this paper, we report the methods and results of these estimations.

Lagrangian observation and modelling of sea surface wind-induced drift(skin drift) (해양 표면취송류(skin drift)의 라그랑쥐 측류 및 모델링)

  • The drift and movement of oil slick in the sea are closely related to the flows at the sea surface (at 0m depth) because specific gravity of an oil is lighter than that of sea water. As an effort toward a development of realistic model for oil spill drift on the sea surface, a study on sea surface wind-induced drift (skin drift) at 4 coastal regions of Korea was carried out. In this study, skin drifts were inferred from difference between the flow at the sea surface and that in underwater (at 1.5m depth). The average speed of skin drift in our experiments was 2.9% of wind speeds and the average direction of skin drift to wind was deflected to the right by 18.6°. The results of this experiment were used in the modelling of the skin drift as a prompt response of time-variable wind. The modelled skin drift, which corresponds to observed wind, successfully reproduced the observed trajectories of sea surface flows.

Comparison of KMA Operational Model RDAPS with QuikSCAT Sea Surface Wind Data (기상청 현업 모델 RDAPS와 QuikSCAT 해상풍 자료의 비교)

  • This study compared the sea surface wind pattern between model results from KMA operational model (RDAPS) and observational results from QuikSCAT in the 2005-2006 year. The mean spatial distributions of sea surface wind show the prominent seasonal patterns of summer and winter season adjacent to Korean Peninsular. The statistical analysis also shows well seasonal variation of sea surface wind patterns between model and observation results. The BIAS value represents less than -0.5 m/s and -1 m/s in summer and winter seasons, respectively. The spatially averaged correlation coefficient shows larger than 0.7 and 0.8 in summer and winter seasons, respectively. The correlation coefficient of winter season shows higher value than that of summer season in the comparison between model and observation. This results show that the RDAPS model simulate well strong sea surface wind in winter season rather than weak sea surface wind in summer season.
