  • This study was designed to investigate the effect of Korean Red ginseng(Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) extracts on antioxidative activities in Sprague-Dawley rats. This study also evaluated the synergistic effect of Korean red ginseng(RG) extracts with Saururus chinensis(Lour.) Baill(SC). and Rubus coreanus Miq.(RC) extracts. Experimental groups were divided into supplementation type(RG extracts, RG with SC and RC extracts) and amounts of extracts. Rats were received drinking water with or without RG, RC and SC extracts for eight weeks. In the antioxidant enzyme activities of liver cytosol, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione peroxidase activities were significantly increased in RG groups and RG with SC and RC groups compared to control group. The antioxidative activities were increased in proportion to supplementation period and amounts of extracts. These results suggest that RG, RC and SC extracts have an beneficial effect to enhance the cellular antioxidant activities in rats.

  • In order to enhance the extraction efficiency of flavonoid from Saururus chinensis, carbohydrate-hydrolyzing enzyme Viscozyme L aided extraction techniques have been studied. Then flavonoid composition, as well as quercetin, were also identified using UV/Vis, HPLC/MS, and 1H-NMR. The results showed that favorable extraction conditions were Viscozyme L concentration of 0.25 mg/g, pH 4.2, reaction at 45 ℃ for 12 h. Under the favorable extraction condition, total flavonoid yield (37.9 mg/g) and quercetin yield (0.86 mg/g) increased by about 2.0 and 9.6 times, respectively, compared to control group. Interestingly, as a significant flavonoid of S. chinensis, flavonoid glycones rutin was hydrolyzed to aglycones quercetin by Viscozyme L. These findings provide scientific and theoretical support for the development quercetin-rich products, which was quickly absorbed by the human body than rutin.

  • We investigated the effect of Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill (SCB) on allergy in mice. We conformed compound 48/80-induced mesenteric mast cell degranulation, active systemic anaphylatic shock and histamine release. Also observed acetic acid-induced vascular permeability and anti-dinitrophenyl (DNP) IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. SCB inhibited mesenteric mast cell degranulation and active systemic anaphylatic shock induced by compound 48/80 dose-dependently. When SCB was pretreated by intra-peritoneal injection, the plasma histamine levels were reduced. SCB also significantly inhibited acetic acid-induced vascular permeability and anti-DNP IgE-mediated passive cutaneous anaphylaxis. In addition, SCB reduced IL-10 mRNA expression of the lung on ovalbumin-induced allergy. These results indicate that SCB inhibits allergy.

  • Background: The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of storage conditions on the growth of Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill. rootstock. Methods and Results: Rootstocks of S. chinensis were stored in either soil or vermiculite that had been treated with a control treatment, diluted wood vinegar (50 or 100-fold), DF-100 (50-fold), or 1-naphthylacetamide and at $5^{\circ}C$ or $15^{\circ}C$. After 8 weeks, the stored roots were planted in the field, and both plant height and leaf number were observed after transplantation. The greatest number of leaves ($5.60{\pm}0.80$) was produced by roots that had been stored in soil treated with 100 fold dilution of wood vinegar and at $5^{\circ}C$. Meanwhile the maximum plant height ($6.92{\pm}0.78cm$) at 30 d after transplanting was observed for rootstocks that had been stored in soil treated with the 100 fold dilution of wood vinegar and at $15^{\circ}C$, whereas the maximum plant height at 60 d after transplanting ($26.46{\pm}0.71cm$) was observed for rootstocks that had been stored in soil treated with the 100-fold dilution of wood vinegar and at $5^{\circ}C$. Therefore, the storage of rootstocks in soil treated with the 100-fold dilution of wood vinegar and at temperatures at or below $5^{\circ}C$ was most effective, and it can be used to prevent the decay of roots during the postharvest management of S. chinensis rootstocks. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicate that, among the parameters examined, the storage of roots in soil that had been treated with the 100-foil dilution of wood vinegar is the most effective method for improving the growth of S. chinensis.

  • The purpose of this study is to confirm the radiation protection and recovery effects of natural mixed radiation protection agents. Red Ginseng, Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill. and Rubus coreanus Miq. mixed extract was orally administered to male SD rats and changes were observed in the blood, small intestine and prostate. The experimental group was organized into a general control group (NC Group), mixed extract administration group (RSR Group), 6 Gy irradiation group (IR Group), and irradiation group after administration of the mixed extract (RSR+IR Group). Among them, the RSR Group and RSR+IR Group were orally administered 2 cc (36.6 mg/day/250 g) of the extract once for two weeks at the same time, and at the end of administration, the IR Group and RSR+IR Group were irradiated with 6 Gy whole body radiation. Looking at hematological changes, the RSR + IR Group showed higher recovery and higher levels of white blood cells and platelets than the IR Group. And SOD levels showed high activity in the group administered the extract. Looking at the small intestine, compared to the IR Group, the RSR+IR Group shows better protection and recovery of small intestine villi length. Likewise, in the prostate, there is less cell damage in the RSR+IR Group, and on the 21st day, the prostate spacing is constant, showing a similar pattern to the NC Group. It is believed that the mixed extract used in the study has radiation protection and recovery effects in male SD rats and will be helpful in the study of mixed radiation protection agents.

  • Saururus chinensis (Lour.) Baill. (Saururaceae) has been used as a traditional medicine for the treatment of dysuria, leukorrhea, eczema, jaundice and ascites in Korea, China and Japan. Ethanol extract of S. chinensis was successively partitioned as methylene chloride, ethyl acetate, n-butanol and $H_2O$ soluble fractions. Among those fractions the ethyl acetate soluble fraction showed the most potent DPPH radical scavenging and superoxide quenching activities. To verify antioxidant activities of ethyl acetate fraction, we checked the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase, and intracellular ROS level and oxidative stress tolerance in Caenorhabditis elegans. Furthermore, to see if increased stress tolerance of worms by treating of ethyl acetate fraction was due to regulation of stress-response gene, we quantified SOD-3 expression using transgenic strain. Consequently, ethyl acetate fraction elevated SOD and catalase activities of C. elegans, and reduced intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner. Moreover, ethyl acetate fraction-treated CF1553 worms exhibited significantly higher SOD-3::GFP intensity.
