Professional identity showed a significant positive correlation with academic self-efficacy (r=.69, p<.001), major satisfaction (r=.72, p<.001), and clinical practice satisfaction (r=.71, p<.001). The factors affecting professional identity were clinical practice satisfaction (ß=.42, p<.001) and academic self-efficacy (ß=.38, p<.001). Conclusion: Our finding suggest that nursing students should be encouraged to develop their professional identity by improving clinical practice satisfaction and academic self-efficacy. Methods: A survey using a structured questionnaire was conducted with 361 nursing students. The data was analyzed using SPSS Windows 21.0 and AMOS 21.0. Results: The elements that directly influence the core competencies of nursing students were satisfaction with their academic discipline (nursing) and critical thinking disposition in which the disposition toward critical thinking directly influenced their satisfaction with nursing as an academic discipline and clinical practice. Conversely, satisfaction with clinical practice indirectly influenced core competencies through critical thinking disposition. Conclusion: This result provides the basic data for a competence-based curriculum intent on strengthening the core competencies (communication, problem-solving, and self-directed learning) by improving satisfaction with both clinical practice with their major and disposition toward critical thinking on the part of nursing students.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the degree of intensive and critical care nursing competence in senior nursing students. Methods: The research method for this study comprised a descriptive survey study with a convenience sample of 113 senior nursing students from one university. The instrument entitled ICCN-CS-1, which measures intensive and critical care nursing competence, was translated by the authors following WHO guidelines for translation process. The data were collected using ICCN-CS-1. Results: The mean score of intensive and critical care nursing was above the intermediate level. The competence indices of knowledge, skill and attitude/value were also above the intermediate level, which suggests that their competence is good. For two intensive and critical care nursing domains, the nursing students' mean score of clinical competence is higher than that of professional competence. The competence of intensive and critical care is also influenced by nursing students' satisfaction in their major and clinical practice as well as their confidence in clinical practice. Conclusion: The senior nursing students' competence of intensive and critical care nursing is above the intermediate level. A consideration of the influencing factors of satisfaction of nursing major/ICU practice and confidence of ICU practice is needed in intensive and critical care nursing education.

Results: In self-directed learning, there were significant differences in gender (t=2.26, p=.025), satisfaction of major (F=7.77, p=.001), and satisfaction of clinical experience (F=10.39, p<.001). Critical thinking disposition differed in gender (t=2.82, p=.005). Moreover gender (t=4.00, p<.001), satisfaction of achievement (F=6.50, p=.002), satisfaction of major (F=4.24, p=.015), and satisfaction of clinical experience (F=9.54, p<.001) differed with clinical competence. Clinical competence was positively related to self-directed learning (r=.45, p<.001) and critical thinking disposition (r=.51, p<.001). According to the result of multiple regression, critical thinking disposition (t=5.80, p<.001), satisfaction of achievement (t=3.33, p=.001), gender (t=2.93, p=.004) and self-directed learning (t=2.35, p=.019) were significant factors of clinical competence explaining 33.0% of the variances.
