As one of segmentation techniques for Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) image with oil spill, we applied a bimodal histogram method to discriminate oil pixels from non-oil pixels. The threshold of each moving window was objectively determined using the two peaks in the histogram distribution of backscattering coefficients from ENVISAT ASAR image. To reduce the effect of wind speed on oil spill detection, we selected ASAR image which satisfied a limit of wind speeds for successful detection. Overall, a commonly used adaptive threshold method has been applied with a subjectively-determined single threshold. In contrast, the bimodal histogram method utilized herein produces a variety of thresholds objectively for each moving window by considering the characteristics of statistical distribution of backscattering coefficients. Comparison between the two methods revealed that the bimodal histogram method exhibited no significant difference in terms of performance when compared to the adaptive threshold method, except for around the edges of dark oil spots. Thus, we anticipate that the objective method based on the bimodality of oil slicks may also be applicable to the detection of oil spills from other SAR imagery.

Despite of growing concern for developing meteorological satellites, poor investment has been realized to acquire effective and efficient satellite image processing technologies. In this study, not only qualitative exploration on mapping each elementary technology into related industries but quantitative inter-industry analysis induced from Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) of the Korean satellite image processing system were performed. Furthermore, economic assessment has been made by estimating internal rate of return(IRR) for the benefits returned versus TCO of the system. The results showed that agriculture and fisheries industry, tourist and leisure industry, and transportation industry were highly related with the acquisition of the system, and that 9.1 billion won of production-induced effects, 3.3 billion won of value-added-induced effects, and 54 individuals of employment-induced effects were anticipated except for those of directly relevant industries. Even in the pessimistic scenario, 7% of IRR exceeding 5.5% assumed as current public rate was postulated, consequently, the investment was fairly justified.
Image segmentation techniques becoming increasingly important in the field of remote sensing image analysis in areas such as object oriented image classification. This paper presents a new method for image segmentation in High Resolution Remote Sensing Image based on Seeded Region Growing (SRG) and Edge Information. Firstly, multi-spectral edge detection was done using an entropy operator in pan-sharpened QuickBird imagery. Then, the initial seeds were automatically selected from the obtained edge map. After automatic selection of significant seeds, an initial segmentation was achieved by applying SRG. Finally the region merging process, using region adjacency graph (RAG), was carried out to get the final segmentation result. Experimental results demonstrated that the proposed method has good potential for application in the segmentation of high resolution satellite images.
This paper presents a system for image matching and recognition based on image feature detection and description techniques from artificial satellite photographs. We propose some kind of parameters from the varied environmental elements happen by image handling process. The essential point of this experiment is analyzes that affects match rate and recognition accuracy when to change of state of each parameter. The proposed system is basically inspired by Lowe's SIFT(Scale-Invariant Transform Feature) algorithm. The descriptors extracted from local affine invariant regions are saved into database, which are defined by k-means performed on the 128-dimensional descriptor vectors on an artificial satellite photographs from Google earth. And then, a label is attached to each cluster of the feature database and acts as guidance for an appeared building's information in the scene from camera. This experiment shows the various parameters and compares the affected results by changing parameters for the process of image matching and recognition. Finally, the implementation and the experimental results for several requests are shown.
The tidal channel is a coastal sedimentary terrain that plays the most important role in the formation and development of tidal flats, and is considered a very important index for understanding and distribution of tidal flat sedimentation/erosion terrain. The purpose of this study is to understand the changes in tidal channels by a period after the opening of the floodgate of the seawall in the reclaimed land of Sihwa Lake using KOMPSAT high-resolution multispectral satellite image data and to evaluate the applicability and efficiency of high-resolution satellite images. KOMPSAT 2 and 3 images were used for extraction of the tidal channels' lineaments in 2009, 2014, and 2019 and were applied to supervised classification method based on Principal Component Analysis (PCA), Artificial Neural Net (ANN), Matched Filtering (MF), and Spectral Angle Mapper (SAM) and band ratio techniques using Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and MF/SAM. For verification, a numerical map of the National Geographic Information Service and Landsat 7 ETM+ image data were utilized. As a result, KOMPSAT data showed great agreement with the verification data compared to the Landsat 7 images for detecting a direction and distribution pattern of the tidal channels. However, it has been confirmed that there will be limitations in identifying the distribution of tidal channels' density and providing meaningful information related to the development of the sedimentary process. This research is expected to present the possibility of utilizing KOMPSAT image-based high-resolution remote exploration as a way of responding to domestic intertidal environmental issues, and to be used as basic research for providing multi-platform-image-based convergent thematic maps and topics.

With the launch of Compact Advanced Satellite 500 series of various characteristics and the operation of KOMPSAT-3/3A, uses of high-resolution satellite images have been continuously increased. Especially, in order to provide satellite images in the form of ARD (Analysis Ready Data), various pre-processing such as geometric correction and radiometric correction have been developed. For pre-processing of high spatial satellite imagery, auxiliary information, such as solar zenith, solar azimuth and offnadir angle, should be required. However, most of the high-resolution satellite images provide the solar zenith and nadir angle for the entire image as a single variable. In this paper, the solar zenith and offnadir angle corresponding to each pixel of the image were calculated using RFM (Rational Function Model) and auxiliary information of the image, and the quality of extracted information were evaluated. In particular, for the utilization of pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle, pixel-based auxiliary data were applied in calculating the top of atmospheric reflectance, and comparative evaluation with a single constant-based top of atmospheric reflectance was performed. In the experiments using various satellite imagery, the pixel-based solar zenith and offnadir angle information showed a similar tendency to the auxiliary information of satellite sensor, and it was confirmed that the distortion was reduced in the calculated reflectance in the top of atmospheric reflectance.

This study intended to assess the reliability of topographic data using satellite imaging data. The topographical data using actual instrumentation data and satellite image data were established and applied to the rainfall-leak model, S-RAT, and the topographical data and outflow data were compared and analyzed. The actual measurement data were collected from the Water Resources Management Information System (WAMIS), and satellite image data were collected from MODIS observation sensors mounted on Terra satellites. The areas subject to analysis were selected for two rivers with more than 80% mountainous areas in the Han River basin and one river basin with more than 7% urban areas. According to the analysis, the difference between instrumentation data and satellite image data was up to 50% for peak floods and up to 17% for flood totals in rivers with high mountains, but up to 13% for peak floods and up to 4% for flood totals. The biggest difference in the video data is Landuse, which shows that MODIS satellite images tend to be recognized as cities up to 60% or more in urban streams compared to WAMIS instrumentation data, but MODIS satellite images are found to be less than 5% error in forest areas.
In order to acquire a wide range of land that changes in real time and quickly and accurately grasp it, we plan to utilize the recently released high-resolution S.Korea's satellite image data and artificial intelligence (AI). Compared to existing satellite images, the spectral and periodic resolutions of S.Korea's satellite are higher, making them a more suitable data source for periodically monitoring changes in land. Therefore, this study aims to acquire S.Korea's satellite, select 8 types of objects to detect land changes, construct data sets for them, and apply AI models to analyze them. In order to confirm the optimal model and variable conditions for detecting 8 types of objects of various types, several experiments are performed and AI-based image analysis is technically reviewed.

Nowadays, a satellite image is widely utilized in identifying and predicting urban spatial growth. It provides essential informations on horizontal expansion of urbanized areas. However, its usefulness becomes very limited in analyzing density of urban development. On the contrary, zonal data, typically census data, provides various density information such as population, number of houses, floor information within a given zone. The problem of the zonal data in analyzing urban growth is that the size of the zone is too big. The minimum administration unit, Dong, is too big to match the satellite images. This study tries to derive synergy effects by matching the merits of the two information sources-- image data and zonal data. For this purpose, basic statistical unit (census block size) is utilized as a zonal unit. By comparing the image and zonal data of 1985 and 2000 of Daegu metropolitan area, this study concludes that urban growth pattern is better explained when the two types of data are properly used.
This paper describes how to find out the optimum position of the reaction wheel assembly (RWA) to minimize image quality degradation through the integrated system jitter prediction combining the micro-vibration test with finite element analysis considering optical coefficients. Micro-vibration generated from RWA that is widely used for satellite maneuver, is one of key factors that degrades the quality of satellite image. Due to varying vibration characteristics of each RWA, its accommodation position may affect image quality even though the same company manufactured them. To resolve this issue, an integrated system jitter prediction is conducted with all possible RWA accommodation location, and finally we determine optimal RWA position from the analysis results.
