To investigate the sedimentary environments on the coastal areas of Imja to Nakweol islands which show very complex shorelines and several zonal sand ridges in NE-SW direction, southwestern coast of Korea, a total of forty samples were taken by a grab sampler and sedimentological and micropaleontological studies on those samples were carried out. The present study area are classified into muddy sandy gravel, sand, city sand, sandy silt and silt facies. With statistical moment parameters such as mean, sorting, skewness and ketosis for the sediments in the study area, the sediments are generally categorized as shallow sedimentary facies. The characters that are observed in quartz grains among the sandy sediments of the study area imply the existence of high energy environments, temporal exposures in atmosphere and the mixing of clastic sediments of the several different origins. In the sediments of the study area, one genera belonging to six silicoflagellata species and five genera belonging to five nannoplankton species were detected. On the basis of the micro-organism assemblage, the study area seems to be influenced by active reworking dominantly under warm water masses. In addition, organic matter ad carbonate contents in the sediments did not show a definite relation with the occurrences of the micro-organisms in the study area.

The application of electrical resistivity, which is related to charge mobility, has increased in the field of geotechnical engineering for the detection of underground cavern, faults and subsurface pollution level. The purpose of this study is to investigate the variation of electrical resistivity due to temperature change. Sand-silt mixture specimens prepared in the square freezing nylon cell are frozen in the frozen chamber. Four electrodes are attached on the four side walls of the freezing cell for the measurement of electrical resistance during temperature change. Electrical resistances of sand-silt mixtures with different degrees of saturation (0%, 2.5%, 5%, 10%, 20%, 40%, 60% and 100%) are measured as the temperature of specimens decrease from $20^{\circ}C$ to $-10^{\circ}C$. The electrical resistances determined by Ohm's law are transformed into the electrical resistivity by calibration. Experimental results show that the higher degree of saturation, the lower electrical resistivity at $20^{\circ}C$. Electrical resistivity gradually increases as the temperature decrease from $20^{\circ}C$ to $0^{\circ}C$. For the specimens with the degree of saturation of 15% or higer, electrical resistivity dramatically changes near the temperature of $0^{\circ}C$. In addition, very high electrical resistivity is observed regardless of the degree of saturation if the specimens are frozen. This study provides the fundamental information of electrical resistivity according to the soil freezing and temperature change demonstrates that electrical resistivity be a practical method for frozen soil investigation.

Coastal sand dunes are important for ecosystems due to the variety of rare species that can be found in this kind of habitat, and the beautiful landscapes they create. For environmental remediation, a potential strategy is phytoremediation using the symbiotic relationship of plants and microbes in the rhizosphere, which has proven ecologically sound, safe, and cost effective. Ninety-five colonies were isolated from the rhizosphere soil (RS) or rhizoplane (RP) of Rorippa islandica, Rumex crispus, Artemisia princeps var. orientalis, Lilium sp Stellaria media, and Gramineae. These colonies were then tested for plant growth promoting activities (PGPAs) such as 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) deaminase activity, and siderphores synthesis ability. In addition, salt tolerance was evaluated at 4% and 8% salt concentrations. It was observed that amongst the test subjects about 50% of the strains had a high resistance to salinity. Many of them could produce indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) IAA (in RS 13.9% and in RP 7.6%), exhibited ACC deaminase activity (55.8% in RS and 36.6% in RP), and could synthesize siderphores (62.7% in RS and 50% in RP). Correlation coefficient analyses were carried out for the three kinds of plant growth promoting abilities (PGPA) and salt tolerance. A positive correlation was found between an ability to synthesize siderphores and ACC deaminase activity (r=0.605, p<0.037). Similarly, positive correlations were noted between salt tolerance and ACC deaminase activity (r=0.762, p<0.004, r=0.771), and salt tolerance and an ability to synthesize siderphores (r=0.771, p<0.003).
As the ocean and beaches have suffered from the losses of sand, it is necessary to monitor the zones that are prone to erosion continuously with the object of the long-term management. However, each ward offices are busy trying to supply sand without analyzing the marine and beach topographic changes. Therefore a long term effect of erosion has not been shown. In this study, we proposed methods to collect accurate spatial data of the oceans and beaches through sounding and GPS surveys, and detected and analyzed topographic changes quantitatively and qualitatively, by using an integrated RS and GIS techniques. The result of this study revealed that the marine topography has been eroded for 25 years, because of the straight construction of the river and the vast development of urban features, in addition with change of the mean depth 0.40 m, the water surface area 11,028 $m^2$, and submarine volume 2,207,884 $m^3$. The beach topography has accreted for 5 years and the change of the mean elevation is 0.27m, the area 6,501 $m^2$, and volume 25,667 $m^3$, because of the installation of geogrids and the seasonal effect. We conducted monitoring works on the topographic survey of the ocean and beaches and analyzed the present condition of the coastal erosions. Therefore, it is estimated that necessary information on the supply of sand, the safe marine leisure and the management of bating place could be provided.

To investigate the effect of yellow dust on phytoplankton, a field survey and physiological experiments were carried out in the waters near Taean Peninsula from April 22 to 26, 2006, when yellow dust occurred. Phytoplankton populations during the yellow dust period were in the range of $26{\sim}290{\times}10^3cells{\cdot}L^{-1}$, a somewhat low standing crop. An increase in diatoms (a main taxonomic group), especially benthic diatoms such as Paralia sulcate, a typical species for active mixed sea water areas, was also remarkable. In addition, the Chl-a concentration after yellow dust exceeded the Chl-a concentration change range according to the tide before yellow dust. As the concentration of yellow sand increased in a yellow sand treatment experiment, primary productivity decreased, and the maximum assimilation number showed the same tendency. In the 48h culture experiment, primary productivity of the test group was lower than that of the control group at the early stage (T0) of yellow sand treatment, but after 48 hours (T48), the test group showed higher primary productivity than the control group. In particular, the primary productivity of the test group significantly increased to 321 % after 48 hours. Therefore, strong physical environment accompanied by yellow dust may temporarily inhibit the growth of phytoplankton in the waters adjacent to China in the early stage of yellow dust, but the formation of stable water mass has also been identified as a potential factor promoting the growth of phytoplankton.
In this study, in order to recycle a large amount of rocks and weathered mudstones produced by civil engineering projects such as railways and highways, as materials for roadbeds or embankment materials, circumferential specimens with a diameter of 5 cm and a height of 10 cm were made. A mudstone that weathered rapidly during rainfall was collected from Pohang construction sites. The weathered mudstone passed through a 2 mm sieve. It was prepared with the cement ratio, the sand ratio, curing condition and curing days. Three specimens were prepared according to each condition and then the unconfined compressive test, durability test and SEM analysis were performed to evaluate the engineering properties of the cemented soil. In the case of 28 days cured specimen, the strength of under-water cured specimens was 32-55% and the durability index was about 15% higher than air cured specimens. In addition, when the CR increased from 8% to 16%, the unconfined compressive strength (UCS) of pure mudstone cemented soil under water increased by about 1.6 times and the durability index increased by about 1.9 times. When the SR increased from 0% to 50%, the UCS of the specimen with SR = 10% was slightly less than or equal to specimen with SR = 0%. Then, as the SR became 30-50%, the UCS increased up to 51%. Unlike the UCS, the durability index increased continuously as the SR increased. As a result of SEM analysis, when SR was 50% rather than SR = 0%, the contact between sand particles increased and they were connected to each other. Such contact between these particles resulted in the increase of strength.
Because the allowable current loading of buried electrical transmission cables is frequently limited by the maximum permissible temperature of the cable or of the surrounding ground, there is a need for cable backfill materials to be maintained at a low thermal resistivity during the service period. Temperatures greater than $50^{\circ}C$ to $60^{\circ}C$ may lead to breakdown of cable insulation and thermal runaway if the surrounding backfill material is unable to dissipate the heat as rapidly as it is generated. This paper describes the results of studies aimed at the development of backfill material to reduce the thermal resistivity. A large number of different additive materials were tested to determine their applicability as a substitute material. The results of Dong-rim river sand (relatively uniform) show that as water content level increases, thermal resistivity tends to decrease, whereas the thermal resistivity on dry condition is very high value($260^{\circ}C-cm/watt$). In addition, other materials(such as Jinsan granite screenings, A-2(sand and gravel mixture), E-1(rubble and granite screenings mixture) and SGFC(sand, gravel, fly-ash and cement mixture)) are well-graded materials with low thermal resistivity($100^{\circ}C-cm/watt$ when dry). Based on this research, 4 types of improved materials were suggested as the environmentally friendly backfill materials with low thermal resistivity.
This study investigated the changes in engineering characteristics of sand-tire chip mixtures during repetitive loading. To quantify the changes in the maximum shear modulus according to the tire chip content in the mixtures and the particle size ratio between sand particle and tire chip, the samples were prepared with tire chip content of TC = 0, 10, 20, 40, 60, and 100%, and the particle size ratios SR were also set to be SR = 0.44, 1.27, 1.87, and 4.00. The stress of the prepared sample was applied through a pneumatic cylinder. The experiment was conducted in the order of static loading (= 50 kPa), cyclic loading (= 50-150 kPa), static loading (= 400 kPa) and unloading. The stress applied to tested mixtures was controlled by a pressure panel and a pneumatic valve by using an air compressor. The shear wave velocity was measured during static and cyclic loadings by installing bender elements at the upper and lower caps of the mold. The results demonstrated that the change in maximum shear modulus of all tested materials with varying SR during repetitive loading is the most significant when TC ~ 40%. In addition, the mixture with smaller SR at a given TC shows greater increase in maximum shear modulus during repetitive loading.
We surveyed the distribution of soil layers on Dongdo and Seodo of Dokdo and measured the physical properties of the soils. To investigate the distribution of soil layers, the soil depth was measured directly in accessible locations, and visual observations of inaccessible locations were carried out using drones and boats. Soil depths ranged from 3 to 50 cm, and most soil layers had depths of 10~20 cm. Based on these results, a map of the soil layer was drawn using 5 cm intervals for soil depth. To analyze the soil characteristics of Dokdo, soil samples were collected from 13 locations on Dongdo and 13 locations on Seodo, in consideration of various geological settings. According to the results of grain size distribution tests, sand contents were >75%, and soil from Seodo contained more gravel-sized particles than that from Dongdo. Using the unified soil classification system (USCS) and textural classification chart of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), most of the soil samples from Dokdo are classified as sand, and some are classified as loamy or clayey sand. In addition, well-graded loamy or clayey sands are more common in Dongdo, and poorly graded sands with gravel are more common in Seodo. These results are expected to be important for studying soil characteristics on Dokdo.

This study investigated the electromechanical properties of cement based smart repair materials (SRMs) according to the different amounts of fine steel slag aggregates (FSSAs). SRMs can self-diagnose the quality of repairing and self-sense the damage of repaired zone. The replacement ratios of FSSAs to sand for SRMs were 0% (FSSA00), 25% (FSSA25), and 50% (FSSA50) by sand weight. The electrical resistivity of SRMs generally decreased as the compressive stress of SRMs increased: the electrical resistivity of FSSA25 at the age of 7 hours decreased from 78.16 to 63.68 kΩ-cm as the compressive stress increased from 0 to 22.37 MPa. As the replacement ratio of FSSAs by weight of sand increased from 0% to 25%, the stress sensitivity coefficient (SSC) of SRM at the age of 7 h increased from 0.471 to 0.828 %/MPa owing to the increased number of partially conductive paths in the SRMs. However, as the replacement ratio of FSSAs further increased up to 50%, the SSC decreased from 0.828 to 0.649 %/MPa because some of the partially conductive paths changed to continued conductive ones. SRMs are expected to self-sense the quality and future damage of repaired zone only by measuring the electrical resistivity of the repaired zone in addition to fast recovery in the mechanical resistance of structures.
