  • The sampling is inevitable in controlling the nonlinear continuous time system. This paper deals with digital feedback linearization problem which eliminates or reduces the effect of the sampling. Necessary and sufficient condition for reducing the sampling error up to O$(h^5)$ are obtained. Also, the effectiveness of our control scheme in accuracy and robustness is shown by comuter simulations.

  • A method is proposed for efficiently estimating the mean of a population which has a linear trend. The proposed estimator is based on the centered modified systematic sampling method and the concept or interpolation. Using the expected mean square error criterion, it is shown that the proposed method is more efficient than conventional methods in most real cases.

  • We have developed a program for generating shotgun data sets from known genome sequences. Generation of synthetic data sets by computer program is a useful alternative to real data to which students and researchers have limited access. Uniformly-distributed-sampling clones that were adopted by previous programs cannot account for the real situation where sampled reads tend to come from particular regions of the target genome. To reflect such situation, a probabilistic model for biased sampling distribution was developed by using an experimental data set derived from a microbial genome project. Among the experimental parameters tested (varied fragment or read lengths, chimerism, and sequencing error), the extent of sequencing error was the most critical factor that hampered sequence assembly. We propose that an optimum sequencing strategy employing different insert lengths and redundancy can be established by performing a variety of simulations.

  • OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplexing) is an effective modulation technique for high speed transmission over fading channels. However, it has a high bit error rate in the receiver if there is an error on frame synchronization because of phase rotation. A coherent OFDM system has to acquire exact timing synchronization of fraction and integer sampling positions. When a sampling offset exist the performance of a receiver will be degraded severely. In this paper, we propose an algorithm that acquires the fractional sampling offset in OFDM systems. This scheme compares the channel impulse responses with the early and late sampled signals having 0.5 sample offset from the estimated sampling positions by correlation with the received and training samples. Its performance is verified by computer simulations in multipath channels.

  • A reliability-based approach that can systematically model various sources of uncertainty is presented in the context of slope stability. Expressions for characterization of soil properties are developed in order to incorporate sampling errors, spatial variability and its effect of spatial averaging. Reliability analyses of slope stability with different statistical representations of soil properties show that the incorporation of sampling error, spatial correlation, and conditional simulation leads to significantly lower probability of failure than that obtained by using simple random variable approach. The results strongly suggest that the spatial variability and sampling error have to be properly incorporated in slope stability analysis.

  • In addition to the measurement of the concentration of soil contaminants, the new idea of indicative parameters was proposed to validate the remedial works through the monitoring for the changes of soil characteristics after applying the clean up technologies. The parameters like CFU (colony forming unit), pH and soil texture were recommended as indicative parameters for land farming. In case of soil washing, water content and the particle size distribution of the sludge were recommended as indicative parameters. The sludge is produced through the particle separation process in soil washing and it is usually treated as a waste. The parameters like water content, organic matter content, CEC (cation exchange capacity) and CFU were recommended as indicative parameters for the low temperature thermal desorption method. Besides the indicative parameter, sampling methods in stock pile and the optimal minimum amount of composite soil sample were proposed. The rates of sampling error in regular grid, zigzag, four bearing, random grid methods were 17.3%, 17.6%, 17.2% and 16.5% respectively. The random grid method showed the minimum sampling error among the 4 kinds of sampling methods although the differences in sampling errors were very little. Therefore the random grid method was recommended as an appropriate sampling method in stock pile. It was not possible to propose a value of optimal minimum amount of composite soil sample based on the real analytical data due to the dynamic variation of $CV_{fund{\cdot}error}$. Instead of this, 355 g of soil was recommended for the optimal minimum amount of composite soil sample under the assumption of ISO 10381-8.

  • The sampling methods selected for this area was (1) Simple random sampling (2) Systematic sampling and (3) Sub-sampling. For the calculation of the number of sampling plot, 10 % coefficient of variation was adapted. As a result, 57 plots each for simple random sampling and systematic sampling was calculated. In the sub-sampling method, however, total of 40 plots, which were consisted of 5 Blocks, secondary 4 major units and tertiary 2 minor units, were examined. The reuslts obtained are summarized as follows : 1. The rate of expected error was 9.24% for simple random sampling, 8.36% for systematic sampling and 7.54% for sub-sampling, respectively. Therefore, the sub-sampling was proved to be the most accurate method among the test. 2. The volume calculated by each sampling method was compared to the volume of all stand. The rate of expected error was also lowest in the sub-sampling (0.39%), followed by systematic sampling (4.18%) and simple random sampling (7.92%). 3. Comparing the various reuslts and analysis of these results, the sub-sampling was regarded as the most rapid and economical method because this method had not only the least number of plots but also the least expected error among the tested sampling methods Therefore the sub-sampling is proved to be an ideal sampling method for forest survey.

  • In the paper, the differential detection techniques of 3-h CPM signals whose modulation index is varied periodically are proposed and their error performances are analyzed. We select the modulation index sets which are proper to the differential detection and propose the differential detectors which detect symbol with 3 bits per smapling period of 3T and detect a bit per sampling period of T. Applying the nonredundant error correction circuit and viterbi algorithm to differential detection of 3-h CPM. We ascertain the error performances are improved.

  • This paper considers a Bayesian approach to modeling a flexible regression function under structural measurement error model. The regression function is modeled based on semiparametric regression with penalized splines. Model fitting and parameter estimation are carried out in a hierarchical Bayesian framework using Markov chain Monte Carlo methodology. Their performances are compared with those of the estimators under structural measurement error model without a semiparametric component.
