A Study of Deduction of evaluation Items for Design of SOFC stack safety performance evaluation system (SOFC 스택 안전성능 평가 시스템 제작을 위한 평가항목 도출에 관한 연구)

  • SOFC(Solid Oxide Fuel Cell) is one of the high-temperature fuel cells, SOFC system and Stack has a high temperature operating Characteristics. These Characteristics cause a lot of trouble in the design of the system and selection materials, securing durability, and securing safety performance. Therefore, For Commercialization and Supply of SOFC, the development of safety performance assessment techniques and evaluation systems should go together. In this study, we analyzed the evaluation items of SOFC Safety performance standards and risk factors of the stack for design of stack safety performance evaluation system. Based on the analyzed data, the evaluation item was deducted for design of stack safety performance evaluation system. Through the results of this study, we expect to facilitate the supply of SOFC and contribute to a safe use environment.

  • 고체 산화물 연료전지(SOFC) 시스템은 스택과 기계적 주변 장치인 MBOP(Mechanical Balance of Plant), 그리고 전기적 주변장치인 EBOP(Electrical Balance of Plant)로 구성되어있다. SOFC는 일반적으로 $700^{\circ}C$ 이상의 고온에서 작동되기 때문에 효율적인 열 이용 및 열 관리가 중요하다. SOFC 시스템의 MBOP에는 상온의 연료가스들을 고온으로 가열하여 스택에 유입 시기키 위한 열교환기 및 촉매연소기 등의 장치들이 필요하며, 효율적인 열관리를 위해서는 고온에서 작동하는 장치들을 한곳에 통합하여 구성하는 것이 필수적이다. 본 연구에서는 SOFC 시스템의 MBOP(Mechanical Balance of Pant) 중 고온부에 해당하는 촉매연소기, 열교환기 및 스택이 통합된 스택 모듈을 제작에 앞서 개념 검증을 위해 열교환기 및 촉매연소기로 이루어진 프로토타입(prototype)의 SOFC 모듈평가 장치를 제작하였다. 열교환기는 Plate형으로 총 6개로 구성되어 있으며, 연료극과 공기극 가스라인에 각각 3개씩 배치하여 스택에 유입되는 연료 및 공기가 촉매연소기에서 나오는 고온의 배가스와 열교환되어 가열되도록 구성하였다. 촉매연소기는 honeycomb 타입의 촉매를 사용하였고, 촉매연소기로 유입되는 연료극 배가스와 공기의 균일혼합과 hot spot을 방지하기 위한 장치를 삽입하여 제작하였다. 제작된 SOFC 모듈평가장치는 시운전을 통해 각 장치의 성능 확인 후 반응면적이 $20{\times}20cm^2$ 인 단전지를 적층하여 연계 운전을 수행하였다.

  • We have developed a $kW_e$ class liquid fuel based solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) system. Our final target is to develop the 1 $kW_e$ diesel based SOFC system for residential power generator(RPG). In this study, we present the conceptual design of SOFC system. System is composed of hot-box and cold-box. Planar typed SOFC stack, heat exchanger, combustor for stack tail gas, and fuel processor, such as fuel reformer and desulfurizer, are contained in the hot-box. And several balance of plants(BOP), such as fuel suppliers and controller, are contained in the cold-box. Before the SOFC system fabrication, we have already operated the selfsustaining fuel processor, and heat exchange of all heat-related components is simulated using ASPEN HYSYS, because heat maintenance and management in hot-box are important for stable operation of SOFC system. The self-sustained fuel processor was successfully operated for about 250 hours, and heat exchange is enough to operate the SOFC system.

  • Performance of a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) can be enhanced by converting thermal energy of its high temperature exhaust gas to mechanical power using a micro gas turbine (MGT). A MGT plays also an important role to pressurize and warm up inlet gas streams of the SOFC. In this study, the influence of performance characteristics of the tubular SOFC on the hybrid power system is discussed. For this purpose, detailed heat and mass transfer with reforming and electrochemical reactions in the SOFC are mathematically modeled, and their results are reflected to the performance analysis. The analysis target is 220kWe SOFC/MGT hybrid system based on the tubular SOFC developed by Siemens-Westinghouse. Special attention is paid to the ohmic losses in the tubular SOFC counting not only current flow in radial direction, but also current flow in circumferential direction through the anode and cathode.

  • SOFC 발전 시스템은 친환경 고효율 에너지 발전 미래 에너지기술로서 개발의 초점이 되고 있다. SOFC는 연료전지 발전 기술 중 최고효율과 최장 수명을 가지며 유일하게 기존 발전기술과 가격 경쟁이 가능한 것으로 알려지고 있다. 현재 분산 발전용으로 개발이 진행되고 있으며 향후 중앙발전, 휴대용, 가정용 및 수송용 등으로 그 시장이 확대될 것으로 예상된다. 분산 발전 SOFC 개발을 위해서는 시스템 Scale-up이 기술 확보가 관건이며 특히 스택 제조 비용의 2/3 이상을 차지하는 대면적 단전지 제조 공정 기술 개발이 필요하다. 단전지 대면적화는 원가 절감 및 성능 개선을 기대할 수 있게 하므로 분산 발전 SOFC 상용화를 위한 핵심 기술이라 할 수 있다. 그러나 기존의 국내 SOFC 연구는 시스템이나 소형 단전지 위주로 진행되어 왔으며 대면적 단전지 제조를 위한 핵심 공정 기술에 대한 연구는 취약한 상황이다. 또한 랩스케일의 소규모 연구를 뛰어넘는 양산 기술 개발에 대한 연구는 전무한 실정이다. 또한 재료 및 공정 적합성을 요구하는 대면적 SOFC 단전지의 양산 기술 개발을 위해서는 원료 분말 및 기초소재의 국산화를 통한 제조 공정 윈도우를 확대하여 제조 수율을 향상하는 것이 매우 중요하다. 본 논문에서는 그동안 포스코파워(주)에서 대면적 SOFC 단전지 양산 기술 개발을 위해 추진 중인 $400cm^2$급 대면적 SOFC 단전지의 제조 및 성능에 대한 연구 결과를 발표하고자 한다. 또한 대형 단전지 제조 공정의 재현성, 상용화 수준의 성능, 내구성 및 경제성 확보를 위한 공정 개선을 위한 포스코파워(주)의 연구 현황 및 양산 기술 확보를 위한 제조 윈도우 확보 전략에 대해 발표하고자 한다.

Optimization of Heat Exchange Network of SOFC Cogeneration System Based on Agricultural By-products (농산부산물 기반 SOFC 열병합발전 시스템 열교환망 최적화)

  • In this study, we constructed a process simulation model for an agricultural by-products based Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) combined heat and power generation system as part of the introduction of technology for energy self-sufficiency in the agricultural sector. The aim was to reduce the burden of increasing fuel and electricity consumption due to rapid fluctuations in international oil prices and the expansion of smart farming in domestic farms, while contributing to the national greenhouse gas reduction goals. Based on the experimental results of 0.3 ton/day torrefied agricultural by-product gasification experiment, a model for an agricultural by-product-based SOFC cogeneration system was constructed, and optimization of the heat exchange network was conducted for SOFC capacities ranging from 4 to 20 kW. The results indicated that an 8 kW agricultural by-product-based SOFC cogeneration system was optimal under the current system conditions. It is anticipated that these research findings can serve as foundational data for future commercial facility design.

  • The electrification of the waste heat of stack is necessary to enhance the efficiency of fuel cell system. For this purpose, the hybrid SOFC/GT/ST system is suitable. The purpose of this work is to predict the performance of methane fueled SOFC/GT/ST hybrid power system and to analyze the influence of operating temperature of stack, current density of stack, and gas turbine pressure ratio. According to the analysis, it is proved that the SOFC/GT/ST hybrid system suppress the rapid decrease in efficiency and lead to the significant improvement of efficiency as compared with SOFC system.

Recent R&D Trends of Solid Oxide Fuel Cell Power Generation System (고체산화물 연료전지 발전시스템의 최근 연구 개발 동향)

  • This article reviews recent R&D trends in SOFC development with an emphasis on industries that can produce the SOFC stack and power generation system. SOFC is an electrochemical device that can convert the chemical energy of fuel into the electrical energy with environment friendly system and high efficiency. SOFC power generation system could be classified as the portable power generation system, auxiliary power unit(APU), residential power generation(RPG) and large size distributed power generation. In the case of more than 10kW system, the major R&D trends are focused on the tubular type SOFC system with high efficient and long term stability to meet the commercialization of SOFC power generation system.

  • A performance analysis of a SOFC/MGT hybrid system has been carried out for concept design. Thermo-dynamic models for each component being able to describe electrochemical characteristics and heat and mate-rial balance are proposed. Estimated is the power capacity of a SOFC suitable for the hybrid operation with a 5kW class MGT. Effects of current density and operating pressure are also investigated. Electric efficiency showed weak dependence on operating pressure and current density. It is desirable that the SOFC operates at high current density in manufacturing cost's point of view though operating with high current density slightly decreases the electric efficiency find specific power.

A Study on Proposing Practicable Configurations against Propeller Racing for SOFC/GT Hybrid System in Ships (프로펠러 레이싱에 대비한 SOFC/GT 하이브리드시스템의 대책 방안에 관한 기초적 연구)

  • The purpose of this study is to propose practicable configurations against Rapid Load Down like propeller racing of ships which have been using SOFC/GT hybrid system on board. This paper suggests four kinds of countermeasures against propeller racing. The types A and B keep a fixed load of SOFC and save a surplus electric power to a storage system. In types of C and D, the load of SOFC is changed with the propeller racing. The best desirable countermeasure for Rapid Load Down depends upon the size of the ship, the propulsion power, and the characteristics of the engine system.
