  • In this paper, the protection coordination of the protection devices such as the over-current relay (OCR) and recloser (R/C) with superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) was investigated in a KEPCO grid. The operation time and protection coordination of the protection devices were changed by the SFCL. Through the analysis for protection coordination between the SFCL and the protection devices in the KEPCO grid, the operation time was observed to depend on the impedance of the SFCL.

  • The fault current of the power transmission system is greater than that of the power distribution system. Therefore, the introduction of superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) is more needed to reduce the increased fault current. The trigger-type SFCL consists of the high-temperature superconducting element (HTSC), the current limiting reactor (CLR) and the circuit breaker (CB). The trigger-type SFCL can be used to supplement the disadvantages of the resistive-type SFCL. The operation characteristics of the current ratio differential relay which is usually applied to the protection device of the power transmission system are expected to be affected under fault conditions and the applicability of the trigger-type SFCL. In this paper, we analyzed the operating characteristics, by the fault conditions, between the current ratio differential relay for line protection and the trigger-type SFCL in the power transmission system through the PSCAD/EMTDC simulation.

  • The recovery time of developing SFCL(Superconducting Fault Current Limiter) has an uncertainty. In general, the recovery time is estimated at 1 sec and more, even though the progress of SFCL technology is considered. However, auto reclosing time of circuit breaker is 0.5 sec in Korean distribution power system. It is impossible to apply only one SFCL to power system because the recovery time is over the reclosing time of protection system. This study proposes a new SFCL system for distribution power system application. The proposed systems consider auto reclosing action for the protection in practical power system and consist of tow parallel SFCLs.

  • Protection in HVDC(High Voltage Direct Current) have the very fast velocity of fault detection. Because Fault in HVDC has the fast propagation, large currents, high interruption cost. The focus to velocity caused possibility of errors like a detection error like a high impedance fault. In this paper, Proposed complex composition for get the reliability and velocity. That used SFCL(Super Conducting Fault Current Limiter), Protection Zone and DTS(Distributed Temperature Sensing). The SFCL was detect the fault by quench and DTS&Protection Zone were perceive the detect by variation too. To examine the proposed method, PSCAD/EMTDC simulated. The results of simulation, proposed methods could the detect of fault to whole HVDC line. And that improved the reliability of fault clearing.

  • As an preliminary study for the quench protection of high temperature superconducting (HTS) cable using superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL), experimental research was carried out. The test circuit was composed of Bi-2223/Ag HTS tape and a SFCL made of YBCO thin films. In the normal state, the applied current of 56 A, which was critical current of HTS tape, could be flown through the circuit without resistive loss. Increasing the currents, the quench development of both materials was investigated from the voltage signal acquired from the resistance of the quenched superconductor. Up to around 10 times of the critical current was applied to the HTS tape and the current limiting characteristics of SFCL were investigated. In addition, for the finding out the optimal operating condition of SFCL such as the numbers of elements, a shunt resistor was applied to the SFCL and quench characteristics were analyzed as well.

  • The study for a protective relay system is one of the important technical issues on the power system application of Superconducting Fault Current Limiter (SFCL). We used Real Time Digital Simulator(RTDS) to study the true interaction of the protection system with the power system. RTDS modeling of SFCL is necessary to the detailed protective relay tests. In this paper, we developed an analysis model using RTDS for studying the transient behavior of 22.9kV SFCL and carried out closed-loop testing of protective relays in distribution power system with the developed SFCL model. The SFCL model has the operation mechanism of 22.9kV hybrid SFCL being developed by LSIS and KEPRI in Korea. The parameters of the model are based on the test data of the real SFCL. Power system planners and operators can solve the expected problems in power system application of SFCL using protective relay testing results.

  • The fault current has increased due to the large power demand in power distribution system and network distribution system. To protect the power system effectively from the increased fault current, the superconducting fault current limiter (SFCL) has been notified. However, the conventional SFCL has some problems such as cost, operation, recovery, loss. To solve some problems, the hybrid superconducting fault current limiter using the fast switch was proposed. However, hybrid SFCL also has a problem that is protection coordination in power distribution system with hybrid SFCL. In this paper, the fault current limiting characteristics of hybrid SFCL with first half cycle non-limiting operation according to the fault angle, the resistance of superconducting element, and the magnitude of Current Limit Resistor (CLR) which are the components of hybrid SFCL were analyzed through the experiments.

  • In this paper, the effect of SFCL which was applied on neutral line of main transformer in distribution substation was analyzed in addition to the position of SFCL among some cases which are studied. The result about the limiting current was compared with the effect with SFCL applied on feeder. The limiting current characteristics are similar to the effect of SFCL on feeder. Therefore, this application of SFCL is required to protection coordination such as SFCL is applied on feeder.
