  • Ammonia accumulation is regarded as the limiting factor of the first priority in water qualities of aquatic culture systems. Nitrification efficiency and characteristics in seawater were evaluated using Rotating Biological Contactor (RBC) process as a part of the recycling water treatment facilities for marine fish culture system. Ammonia removal efficiency regarded 99.7 to $83.7\%$ at the ammonia surface loading rates of 48 to $393 mg/m^2$ -day. RBC process was able to withstand to the fluctuation of influent ammonia concentrations and loading and produced the stable effluent. The mathematical model on the fixed-film biological reactor developed by Kornegay seemed to be suitable to RBC process kinetic evaluation for the recycling water treatment of the marine fish culture system. Area capacity constant (P) and half-velocity constant (Ks) in the model were 0.188g/m^2$-day and 1.25mg/l, respectively.

  • Recirculating aquaculture systems consist of different treatment compartments that maintain water quality within the ranges of commonly recommended for fish culture. This paper presents the common considerations in designing different treatment compartments as well as the engineering criteria in designing closed recirculating aquaculture system including a circular tank for fish culture, a sedimentation basin and a foam fractionator for solids removal, two styrofoam bead filters for TAN removal, a sand filter for nitrate removal, and aerators. The main purpose is to outline a common procedure in designing of closed recirculating aquaculture system for marine fish culture.

  • Infection rates with white spot baculovirus(WSBV) in wild-caught shrimp spawners appeared to be 52% in Penaeus chinensis and 20% in Penaeus japonicus when diagnosed by polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Infection rates of WSBV from inhabitant organisms in shrimp farm showed 37% in Upogebia major and 29% in Calliamassa japonica. The viruses maintained their survivorship in seawater at $4^{\circ}C$, but lost it at $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Prolactin (PRL) plays an important role in freshwater (FW) osmoregulation by preventing the loss of ions and the uptake of water in fish. Growth hormone (GH) promotes acclimation to seawater (SW) in several teleosts. We acclimated rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss weighting $68.2{\pm}16.6$, $138.3{\pm}24$, and $287.5{\pm}42.1$ g in separate experiments to SW under slow-acclimation (SSW) or acute-acclimation (ASW) conditions, and then examined the PRL and GH mRNA levels using the real-time quantitative polymerase chain reaction. The PRL mRNA levels in all three experimental groups decreased significantly with both the SSW and ASW treatments, as compared to a control group kept in FW for 30 days. The GH mRNA levels increased with ASW in the largest fish, whereas the levels in the other groups did not change significantly. The mortality rate of the largest fish was lower than for the other groups, whereas the growth rate among the three experimental groups did not differ significantly. The growth rate of the ASW group was highest for the smallest fish. These results suggest that SW acclimation is associated with the gene expression levels of PRL and GH in relatively large rainbow trout. In addition, the fish mortality and growth rate on FW-SW transfer seem to be related to body weight, and the SW acclimation method may be applied to the hatcheries industry.

Ichthyofauna of Stream on Goseong in Gyeongsangnam-do, Korea (경남 고성지역의 소하천 어류상)

  • The fish species and groups were investigated at the four streams in Goseong from September 2011 to August 2012. During the survey period, 17 species from Goseong stream, 18 species from Maam stream, 20 species from Guman stream, and 15 species from Baedun stream of fish were collected. Four creek downstreams were classified into 2 groups which were categorized by the effects of seawater. Group A is Guman and Maam streams with no estuary barrage, with the exchange of freshwater and seawater. On the other hand, group B is Goseong and Beadun streams which was blocked by the estuary barrage and submerged weir. The former group was mainly consisted of peripheral freshwater fish species such as Tridentiger brevispinis, Gymnogobius castaneus, Mugli cephalus, and Acanthogobius flavimanus. The latter one was composed of primary freshwater fish species such as Zacco koreanus, Squalidus gracilis majimae, and Pseudorasbora parva. These results suggest that estuary barrage and submerged weir in the stream could change the natural flow of seawater and freshwater, resulting in change of fish species and groups.

  • Numerical Analysis for exchanging seawater experiment is carried out in Do-Jang fish port. The change of tidal velocity and water level is derived by the two-dimensional nonlinear shallow-water numerical model. To calculate exchange rate of seawater with the change of tidal velocity and water level, a two-dimensional numerical model is employed which governing equations are Fokker-Plank equations. The calculated exchange rates of each time are described in tables and figures.

  • Formalin, 37% formaldehyde, has been employed as a chemical for controlling ectoparasites and aquatic fungi responsible for infectious fish of diseases in hatcheries and culture facilities (Roberts, 1978; Schnick, 1991; Rach et al., 1997). Regarding the commercial usage of formaldehyde in the aquaculture industry, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved three commercial products as parasiticides in a species-specific manner: Paracide-F and Formalin-F for bluegill, catfish, largemouth bass, salmon, and trout and Parasite-S for all finfish (FDA, 1998). Withdrawal time for these products was legally zero when used as permitted under the regulations. With the increased production of cultured fish in Korea, such as olive Hounder Paralichthys olivaceus and black rockfish Sebastes schlegeli, application of formalin to diseased fish has become more frequent. Moreover, there is still some concern about environmental exposures caused by effluents from fish culture facilities. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate residues in fish resulting from therapeutic usage of formalin in the aquaculture industry and to document the rate of disappearance of formaldehyde in seawater treated with formalin. Temporal & Spatial Distribution of Fish Community in the Lagoon Youngrang, Korea (영랑호 어류군집의 시.공간적 분포)

  • Temporal and spatial distribution of fish community were investigated from September 2006 to April 2007 targeting the lagoon Youngrang, Korea. A total of 32 species belonging to 16 families were collected during the period, among which the species of primary freshwater fish accounted for 11 (34.38%), the species of peripheral freshwater fish for 18 (56.25%), and that of marine fish for 3 (9.38%) in collected fish community. As a result of taking a look at the transitional aspects of community by each surveyed station and period, it was found that when the 'Breaking-sandbar' occurred, there came a change in the composition ratio of the fish species according to their ecological characteristics. In addition, compared with the data obtained in the past with respect to the ichthyofauna of the lagoon Youngrang, it was found that the ratio of the primary freshwater species gradually decreased, while the peripheral freshwater and seawater species gradually increased according to the indraft of seawater. Thus, it was concluded that fish community in the lagoon seemed to go under transition in its spatio-temporal characteristics depending on the 'Breaking- sandbar.'

  • To assess environmental characteristics of the aquaculture area in Tongyeong, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN), dissolved inorganic phosphorous (DIP) and chemical oxygen demand (COD), and acid volatile sulfur (AVS) were measured in seawater and sediment samples collected from 10 locations of Tongyeong coastal area from July to December in 2013. The quality of the seawater may be affected by seasonal variation rather than the distance from fish farm. However, sediment was contrary to seawater; the distance from fish farm may be a main factor to affect COD and AVS in sediment than season and other parameters. It is expected that contaminated organic sediments of fishery located in semi-closed bay are rapidly dispersed into surrounding waters due to fast current.

Investigation of water qualities and microbials on the flow-through olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus farms using coastal seawater and underground seawater in Jeju (연안해수와 지하해수를 사용하는 제주 넙치 양식장의 수질과 미생물 변동)

  • This study assessed the levels of water qualities and microbials contamination of inland olive flounder farms in Jeju in the summers from 2015 to 2017. Three farms (A-C) located in a concentrated area using mixing coastal seawater and underground seawater and one farm (D) located in an independent area using only coastal seawater were selected. Total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) reached a maximum of 0.898 ± 1.024 mg/L as N in the coastal seawater of A-C, which was close to the limit of the water quality management goal of the fish farm. TAN in the influent from A-C was up to three times higher than that of D, so that the discharged water did not spread to a wide range area along the coast and continued to affect the influent. TAN of the effluent in A-C increased by 2.7-4.6 times compared to the influent, resulting in serious self-pollution in the flounder farm. Heterotrophic marine bacteria in the influent of A-C was about 600 times higher than D, and the discharge of A-C was increased by about 30 times compared to the influent.
